Finland isn't exactly "not known for their race car drivers". In almost any international motorsport, there's been a slew of Finns racing and winning. For example Finland was the undisputed number one home of WRC champions before the domination of the two Sebastiens taking the top number of championships to France. And even now, Finland has overwhelmingly the biggest number of champions. BTW, talking about Loeb and Ogier, what's up with the trend of long lasting champions in F1 and especially WRC in the last 20 years? In F1 it's been mostly Schumacher, Vettel and Hamilton, and in WRC almost exclusively Loeb and Ogier. It's almost as if the two sports have gone stale and the same drivers are practically meant to win multiple times, instead of having to seriously compete for their titles most of the time.

Actually Brazilian blooming in F1 was a consequence of the rise of Brazil’s auto industry in the 60s, around São Paulo. It created an ecosystem of auto parts makers, garages, stores etc. The Fittipaldi brothers themselves (Emerson and his brother Wilson, who also raced F1) had a steering wheel factory. São Paulo was also the destination of a horde of Italian immigrants (the Fittipaldis among them), who brought the auto racing passion with them. The construction of the Interlagos racing track in the 50s catalyzed all that into structured competitive auto racing. Brazil now has many racing tracks and championships, from rally to stock car to monopostos. Last but not least, you failed to mention 3 time world champion Nelson Piquet, for some reason often forgotten in great champions lists.

In Finland driving long stretches on icy backroads is still very common for everyone, and if one is any interested in driving, no matter if it is RWD, FWD or AWD car, it is really common we give it all to drive as fast (but still safe) as we reasonably can all the time. Because of the long distances. I've seen my mother in law and my friends mother powersliding in winter coditions like it's not a big deal just because of the difficult conditions. I guess we have just an ideal combination of shitty (read that as challenging) roads and shitty (read that as challenging) cars, latter especially because of hard taxation of new cars.

Learning to drive in the USA and most other countries, you're taught to avoid skids at all costs and never break traction. Most people have no idea how to recover from, much less control or initiate a skid. Not only does the Finnish driver test require power slides, many Finnish drivers routinely break traction in non panic fashion on the way to the store or work. Once I had taken taxi service in London. While small-talk during the ride, driver told he is Finnish. He was recollecting his experience of having his friend coming to visit him and while driving they were loudly talking in Finnish. This made him think in finnish and changed his driving style to left-hand drive. Luckily he realized before escaping a close accident. This experience sharing made me an impression that finnish people are great drivers due to their driving environment. No wonder rac8ng is in their blood!

I was into karting for a few years and what makes the UK great at producing drivers is that its compact and we have so many tracks so if your dad has a Transit van and a set of spanners he can run you around the country at weekends so its easy to get expirence without being super rich. Its a pity these days as its changing and the sport is starting to slowly get taken over by lads with rich daddys, But if you got the dedication and skills you can still get picked up as a junior by one of the teams.

Talking about ratios: Argentina: 2 drivers (I can remember), 5 championships. Australia: about 10 drivers, 4 championships Austria: 8 drivers, of whom only 5 raced for at least one complete season: 4 championships. Plus, Austria has the driver who arguably made the best contract decisions to maximise his income without ever winning a championship in Gerhard Berger ;-) And Finland is even more impressive, because their best talents don't even go into F1, but rather into Rallye driving.
