Agreed, as much as teachers impart knowledge onto the younger generation, that doesn’t really help if said students aren’t willing to show the respect, let alone be a functioning human being instead of a screen zombie that just sits there and not engaging with what is being taught. Nor is it the teachers’ responsibility to teach proper adequate and other basic foundations that should have already been established during a child’s development at home.

My brother and his wife have been teachers, elementary, for over 25 years. Both quit last year because they got sick of the disrespect, and verbal and physical abuse by the students, and their parents. These were kids in a "Good" middle to upper class school district. My brother taught high school in LA for ten years, and he said that those students had nothing on this new generation. Mind you back then he had guns pulled on him several times.

if teachers don't want to be baby sitters, they need to quit these schools. These schools do not want to teach, they just want a daycare. These educators should be teaching and advocating for tradeschool to replace these institution who no longer serve a purpose of giving knowledge. That and tradeschools are better suited for preparing students for the real world.

@JennyKlindt
@JennyKlindt Місяць тому
I agree. But also the norms formed by social media and being perfect, looking perfect, be "successful" makes a whole lot of selfcentred people...in this case the parents. We need to stop or heavily reduce the use of ipads, social media plattforms etc because it is going to ruin us. There have been studies shown that all this use has decreased skills such as empathy, conflict resolution, communication, bonding and also patience in us as people. So in other words one will grow up to be narcissistic, lonely and aggressive without the ability to communicate properly. Great!

yeah but also most of this problem is from lower class students whose parents have to work more than before because of price increases etc. the rich families who can have private tutoring and education aren't dealing with this issue to a great extent from what i've seen. their kids know discipline. pretty sure if the parents weren't overworked, more of them would be willing to support their kids' learning

I think the pandemic and at-home learning really emphasized the failure on the parents part because the kids couldn't be as easily held accountable for not doing their homework the next day like in person and parents would usually not set up the laptop in a structured/distraction free place. Parents also wouldn't support or help their kids with problems or make sure they understood what was being taught. They were super hands-off and children need structure to thrive, structure which both the pandemic and their parents fail to give them.

Because of people like your teacher. Every movement in history is nearly always reactive. So after enough people get tired of one trend, they overcorrect the opposite way. In your case, it would go “I had a teacher flame me for my writing…so I’m going to make sure my child never has to put up with that.” And maybe you’d have the self-control to maintain boundaries but the general population just blindly swings the opposite way as a cure-all for their past problems with little thought for consequences.

We plan on homeschooling and so far, my kids are very friendly, compared to the other children who hardly want to socialize at all. Every time my son sees a younger child he always wants to say hello and be friendly towards them. I often find other kids are rude or are detached and don't want to play with kids they don't know. I want my kids to grow up having friends, but how hard will it be, if their generation is this way? I remember how easy it was to make friends at a park even just for the day when I was a kid (I'm 28). I did my best, I tried to cater to the children’s needs, I cracked jokes out and did funny dances so they can smile and laugh. But they said I don’t deserve the money I’m paid. I was severely underpaid for that job. 8 hours a day for I think a large part of summer vacation. It was absolutely terrible I’m never working at a camp again. Mainstreaming highly dysfunctional kids has been a failure. They also need to stop leaning on restorative justice so much as a substitute for discipline. It's only appropriate for mild to moderate misbehaviour, and first offenders. It's sad because I taught some international students from Japan last year, and the advanced English students can write essays, read college texts, and insert research into essays, and when I taught in Japan, the kids who learned English from a young age were reading on level, while American kids learning in US public school systems and in US home environments are behind. Foreigners are learning to read and write English better than Americans. (Nothing against foreigners, but Americans should be able to read their native language!) The pandemic was global, but since parents in other countries still parent and their cultures are more focused on family/education, the students are able to bounce back quickly. I am now working remotely part time so I can be home with my son (I was listening to this while working and my husband was taking his turn with our son). So far he has no screen time on a device and we watch one hour of tv a day (a Japanese show for extra language exposure since I speak both languages to him). I am pretty sure I don't want to put him through a US public school system, so if things aren't better in a few years and if we are still in the US, I will homeschool my child. I don't want him to pick up bad habits from other students.

If my children aren't learning the material or doing the work well, maybe they'll catch on the second time around. I also refuse to let them do summer school. I'm fairly easy going as a mom. I know everyone needs mental health days and my children are free to come to me and say i just can't do it today...I have those days too...but I also tell them that they may be surprised by how resilient they are when they push through difficult times and come out the other side. I definitely think c19 had a very detrimental effect on school age kids. I also see that things like TikTok (not allowed in my house) are playing a huge part in why kids just aren't living up to their potential. This has gotten so bad its getting so out of hand, i cant even describe how much i feel bad for them. I try to get them into the right track, i try to teach them the right things to do. But they cant comprehend the severity of this situation, they dont know what im talking about. They are getting math scores so unimaginably low, its not even funny anymore its concerning. When people try to teach them something they say they perfectly understand, then the next day you ask a question about what they taught them. They dont know they are completely unfamiliar and clueless about it. I cant understand how unbelievably short their attention span is, The foreign knowledge that is given to them and gave them a thorough and deep explanation about the topic, no it doesnt stick to their head, they dont care what the teacher is teaching them.

All because of the funding and 💸💰💵 the schools receive for passing more kids🙄🫠 That is what started and propelled the catastrophe we are in now with schools and the education system. The majority of students are extremely behind for their grade level (math, reading, science, basic comprehension). The students that DO perform at their grade level are then forced to learn at a much lower level so the majority of the class can somewhat keep up with what’s being taught.🤯 It’s so bad!!😕 I have a 12yo 6th grader and it’s a constant fear and worry. As a parent, I have to make sure we’re always doing extra reading, math, English, etc at home to ensure she’s learning enough for her age and grade. I think a lot of millennial parents lack parenting skills, or like it was said in the video- they don’t want to raise their child as strict as they were raised.. but they also don’t want to take the time to teach and raise their child. It’s just a big, scary mess…😵‍💫

i was born in 2010, im also 13, and i think its important for people to realize that just because youre in the same age-group as these kids, doesnt mean you you are like them, or behave like them. a lot of the childrens behavior in this video was influenced by how their parents raised them, and this was explicitly stated in the video. also, these kids arent at fault for a lot of their behavior, if a parent doesnt correct negative behavior or make a good influence on their kids, then theyre bound to end up acting like this since they are most likely unaware how wrong it really is. not to mention if they grew up with social media as their only influence.... the affects social media has on peoples brains is literally crazy

The fact that kids born in 2011 are here commenting is mind bogglingly weird as someone born in 2005. Y'all were born after phones were a thing, but I remember being a little kid and seeing my parents move on from flip phones to smart phones. It feels like I was 13 not too long ago, but you've just made me realize how much time actually passed.

I'm so glad that I raised my kids right. I'm a millennial. I was a teen mom. My kids had rules and screen time restrictions and restrictions on what they were allowed to watch. I watched my kids not their iPad. They didn't get an iPad until their mid teens. There was reasonable and predictable consequences for rule breaking and zero tolerance for disrespectful behavior. But I hugged and held and loved and nurtured my kids. I played with them and made them go outside. I held them accountable. The answer is easy. Don't have kids if you aren't going to put your all into them. They're who will lead and run this country in several decades. Invest in your and their future

Parents need to teach their kids when their at home too. I'm a gen x'er, and when I fell behind in something (Math was a problem), my mom would take me aside after dinner and get my book and start showing me how to do stuff. I learned my multiplication table not from my teacher, but from my mom. Aced my math class that year too. I think parents need to help their kids more.

I quit teaching the youth, I couldn’t handle the constant disrespect. The violence. The lack of caring to even try. I wish all my former students the best but after I took a trip to the hospital due to stress I knew I had to leave.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's good that you valued your health above all else. If your health is being affected, there's no way to teach properly and stay sane.

Another strange thing I’ve noticed as a teacher: when I ask a student on a Monday what they did on the weekend, most can’t remember or said that they did nothing. When I say “well you must have done something” they respond with “can’t remember”. What’s with that???

As someone who is placed into the gen alpha group sadly, my class of MY age too, has trouble spelling words like "communication." but its not many luckily. The kids in the grade below me though are having problems spelling, reading, and yelling at their teachers. Parents, raise your kids.

I feel ashamed of being part of it ○,~,○ I'm glad my parents actually taught me right, I'm homeshooled so i don't get to talk to my friends as often as i would if i went to public school. But i have a big family, so i get to talk to my cousins and have fun. Most of them are older than me, but three are younger. Out of the three, they're all brain dead except the smallest one.
