I actually am with Doug on that last question. I think enthusiasts like to see people keep cars going, even if they’re not special. Seeing anything car on the road for longer than the manufacturer ever intended is always a cool thing to see. So when you couple that with a car that you KNOW is a total PITA to keep going, you respect it that labor of love so much more. And in a weird way, when those cars are actually working correctly, you root for it. I have an older Ferrari, and while it’s a fairly reliable car, you are always worried in the back of your mind “what’s going to happen next, and how much is it going to cost me?” But I work on it myself, and when things go wrong, I solve the problem, and it’s rewarding. And when nothing goes wrong on a drive, you’re proud that your repairs all worked. I think when your car has bad days, it feels more human and less like a product. And for some of us, maintaining the car (or the relationship with it) is part of the fun. Another way to think about it is if you don’t have to work to keep a car going, then it’s just becomes a boring product. But when you have to keep working at a car even after owning it, the chase for “owning it” never ends. It’s like the car can break up with you any minute… In other words, sometimes toxic relationships are the most exciting ones to have. Lol
@looper451
@looper451 9 місяців тому
Doug’s point at the end about the unreliability of classic supercars being part of the mystique is spot on. There is absolutely something to be said for people who use those cars as intended and without fear. Its like when you see a super limited production car being driven hard on track or doing burnouts, not kept in a garage for investment. Alfa Romeos and classic Ferraris are the best examples of this. Those cars are beloved because they take so much time and effort to keep going. You bong with them through the struggles and failures. Its why no one looks at Porsche as a brand of passion, but precision. Porsches don’t break down, won’t have you mad at them, won’t lash out at you. But in that they lack a degree of passion that Italian cars have. Theres no reward in taming a mild beast
@MrGmilton
@MrGmilton 9 місяців тому
I have to agree with you and Doug, it’s a rich man’s flex so most wouldn’t get it. Those who know how nightmarishly expensive and frustrating owning a Ferrari Daytona is are over the moon when someone is out driving like it’s nothing.

Porsche's are clinical and precise but to those of us who have owned really finicky sports cars in the past, it's highly preferred to have car that you can enjoy without fear anytime you want. That's why manual 911's will always be in my garage and I have zero interest in Ferrari even though I could afford one. Not even on my radar.
@kayldomaj6493
@kayldomaj6493 9 місяців тому
Honestly I do not agree with that, especially the "Those cars are beloved because they take so much time and effort to keep going." part. I think it is really wrong, those cars are beloved because they are great cars to drive or look at. I don't think that any of the owners of those cars would tell you they are happy about them not being reliable. On the other hand, this unreliability is what makes those cars so RARE - because no one really want to cope with them, or drive them because they are afraid. So the unreliability in some sense makes the car more special because it makes it more rare, but by no means more enjoyable to own. If you own them, for sure reliability is not something you are happy with.
@acfiv1421
@acfiv1421 9 місяців тому
The failure points of classic supercars were mechanical. If something went wrong you could disassemble it and see the problem. In supercars of the last 20-30 years, they still have mechanical failures just as much as before - it is a machine after all - but now we have a whole new set of failure points, computer and electronics - much of which is "black box", which means if it goes wrong you have no hope of fixing it - you have to find another unit. And getting any sort of transmission other than a manual (especially any sort of sequential gearbox) will double or triple your problems. Sequential gearboxes were the worst possible idea ever to hit the road. Sure, they are great in F1 racing when it will gain you a second or two per lap, but we aren't racing at Monaco, are we? This is why a 1970s Ferrari Daytona will always be worth more than a 599. You can keep the Daytona running forever if you have a good mechanic. The 599, one day, will have a critical part failure with no replacements available which will relegate the car to a nice lawn ornament. 100 years from now, in 2123, you will still have some exotics from the 20th century still drivable, and nothing from the 21st century.
@hughbarton5743

I ran a Land Rover service department during the era you reference, and, yea.....they are basically (usually) mobile dumpster fires. But, the reliability issue is very fixable: buy 4 of them, and work out an arrangement with the repair shop to just leave one parked there. This improves your chances of driving a Landy with confidence is merely comical.....

The E60 M5 is perfect for people who like working on their cars. It's a niche car in that sense, you have to be technical enough to do the maintenance yourself AND do stuff like pirate and understand ISTA, but it's a great car otherwise. I've put 25k on mine since I bought it 2 1/2 years ago, I drive it like it's supposed to be driven, and when you do that all the little issues work their way to the surface so you can really get ahead of it. I love it, I bought it for 12K in the height of the used car depression during the covid hysteria, and I've got another 12 in it. But that's me working on it most of the time.

I have had my E60 M5 for 7 years now, 1 owner car bought from BMW Park Lane with 35K miles...it's now on 85K and it's only been a weekend car. More importantly as I bought it as a BMW Approved car and to this day I still have a BMW warranty on it. It's got a custom genuine Akrapovic exhaust, Eventuri carbon intakes and a prototype Eventuri full carbon plenum...it is absolutely unreal to drive and knowing I have a warranty gives me so much piece of mind as I can enjoy the car as it was intended with zero compromises. In many ways (sound especially) I love it more than my Lamborghini Huracan as that V10 whilst being incredible just doesn't have that banshee-like F1 scream despite having a higher redline. An absolute legend of a car and easily the best M5 ever and one of the best cars of all time. A true 4 door supercar.

More than a warranty, what I feel is absolutely necessary to own these types of affordable collectables is a well-documented repair manual. And I don't mean the "subscription" stuff available today, but a real hardcopy, or at least a PDF equivalent. That'd go a long way to making these types of cars more attainable and realistic.

I definitely agree with Doug at the end. There are certain cars that do have more of a mystical aura because of their unreliability. But this only shows through when we see immaculate examples that are well used despite their problems, because that tells us that whoever owns these cars is extremely dedicated and has the money to keep them running. And that is something that's attainable for very few people and even then it doesn't happen very often, making that experience something special.

Definitely get the NSX. I forget how good they are, then I drive mine again and fall in love again... every time. But, to Doug's point, they are kind of "too good", maybe even "boring", which somehow makes it less of an experience when I use it. But there is definitely something nice to having a reliable, beautiful car in the garage.

Almost nothing worked on it, but I still had a very serious argument with my wife who wanted me to sell it. Sorry to say but….it’s gone! And now that I have the means, I really want another one! Reliability issues or not, they’re the next big thing in Land Rover land, in my opinion…

my addition to the list would be a vw passat W8. it'd make a great daily or reasonable weird car as a manual wagon. but some of those parts and reoccurring issues were expensive. the one i had would kill the thermostat sensor on every thermostat installed, where the sensor couldnt be replaced on its own.

In many ways (sound especially) I love it more than my Lamborghini Huracan as that V10 whilst being incredible just doesn't have the banshee-like F1 scream of the M5 despite having a higher redline. An absolute legend of a car and easily the best M5 ever and one of the best cars of all time. A true 4 door supercar.

My P38 must have been built on a Tuesday, as it's been reliable for 150k miles. It's experienced well-known issues, like air suspension failures (replaced twice under warranty!), and the heater control valve, but it's surprisingly easy to maintain if one has a little mechanical ability, and its issues and repairs are well documented online. As long as I drive mine and keep the battery healthy, it takes care of me. Mostly!

I’m now on my second V10 BMW and can confirm, it is the best sounding (production) BMW of all time. Here’s what I would recommend: 1. Get one with a manual, or budget for a manual swap (when the SMG eventually takes a dump, and it will). It will solve half of your issues. 2. Either buy one which has had the rod bearings done or budget $2.5-3k for the job and it’ll give you peace of mind for the engine. 3. Put aside $5k for random Vanos / throttle actuators / starter problems. That’s it, hardly Ferrari maintenance money, as all of these are one time costs, not recurring costs. Obviously if you sell it within a year - it’ll suck, but keep it 3-5 years and you’re guaranteed to LOL in every tunnel, have fun driving and spread these costs. Highly recommend buying one while you can still get them cheap! 💪👍

So, my ex boss bought a 1994 Range Rover P38A, 4.6 L, petrol, 4-speed automatic, dirt cheap around 2017 or 2018, it was for a company car, we collectively told him the car was a piece of junk. The car was full of luxuries (the high end modification), most of which didn't work, and some of which never managed to work, even after ugodly amount hours in the shop, the fancy pneumatic suspension was swapped out for regular one, and the steering broke on whim mostly while someone was driving it on the highway, the car had GPL, which didn't work most of the time and you had to own a petrol station to drive it otherwise, it ran like 20 liters per 100 km on petrol. We never managed to drive this piece of trash for more than a week, before send it back for repairs. As far as I remember this car is currently not in moving condition and is rusting in a garage somewhere, as it should.

The only vehicle I felt guilty about selling in my automotive career was a P38 Range Rover. I worked at a large reputable dealership and we took one in trade. It was in great shape and well maintained. I got a phone call about the car from an interested buyer. I went out and played with all of the switches and everything seemed to work fine. They were going to come down a couple of hours later to look at it. About an hour before the appointment I went to get it washed and the air suspension, 3 windows and ac weren't working. I was hoping that when they looked at it they would say no. They showed up and everything worked perfectly. I even told them about the issues I had experienced. They didn't buy it that day. However, a couple of days later they decided to buy it. I went out and the same issues plus a couple of more were present. When they showed up I told them about my opinion and everything worked fine for them. I was sure this was a car I'd get phone calls everyday for the rest of my life about something being broken. I talked to them a half a dozen times after they took delivery and they were happy as the day is long.
