This seems to happen every time a ‘cool’ character gains attention. Tommy Shelby is a good example for recently. @@MaXXXXXXXXXXim I get the dilemma but honestly I’d say look how you want. If it’s not hurting anyone and it looks good on you, do it. Michael Mann's Thief is also clearly an inspiration. Synth soundtrack by tangerine dream, very similar intros, parallel plot structures, focus on night-time, and very similar endings. I would say Thief is probably going to come back into popularity as a "literally me" film, because it deals less with alienation (although that is still a theme), and more with class differences and the criminal as blue collar worker vs crime boss as exploitative capitalist who views himself as caring patriarch, which I would say is a smaller theme in drive as well.

I think Nick Mullen had one of the most insightful takes on Drive I've heard, where he said that basically Drive is showing that anyone who could actually be an action star would have to be a psychopath. If you take away the witty dialogue, wisecracks, and one liners, anyone who could actually commit the violence that action stars casually commit on a regular basis would have to be a very fucked up individual. I do love that the Driver has to pay a price for the violence he inflicts though, sort of an inversion of the classic trope of the hero getting what he wants from violence. Every time I see an action hero slaughter people indiscriminately and then afterwards kiss the girl and live happily ever after, it kinda breaks the suspension of disbelief. I think Hemingway said it best in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" after Robert Jordan kills a scout, and when Maria runs up and tries to kiss him, he says something along the lines of "One does not love and do that (killing someone) at the same time". That is the realistic depiction of violence that I like to see, and I think Drive manages to get closer than most movies I've seen, which is why it's still my favorite movie after all this time.

9:04 What is this "person obsessed with fictional character and wants to be like them despite the impracticality" effect? I've seen it so often, it has to have an official name.
@TheKinoCorner
@TheKinoCorner 4 роки тому
Yeah it's a common trope, for sure. We've seen that with V, Joker, The Matrix, and tons of westerns back in the day. It'd be an interesting video topic because I don't think there is a singular term for it but I'm interested in why it happens.
@itstiny.
@itstiny. 4 роки тому
Found it. "Kinning": a term used to describe the acting/believing of oneself as a fictional character, typically done by persons with self image issues or insecurities. Most commonly done with characters from fantasy who wouldn't fit in real life very well. Apparently it's a big thing on Tumblr.

Always was enamored with this movie, really underrated and the soundtrack was dope and it hit right when retrowave was starting to get some footing in the online electronic music scene.

0:25 The year in which Drive takes place is either 2010 or 2011. The theatrical and the DVD release included different radio snippets of the basketball game during the opening, but they both explicitly mention Blake Griffin being on the Clippers. Griffin missed most of his 2009/2010 rookie season, then rose to stardom in his second year, so it's a safe assumption that Drive is set around this time.

This film exists as if it doesn’t exist It’s that surreal. The first time I watched it, I had to keep reminding myself I’m watching a real movie cause it was that extreme and over the top It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced while watching a movie. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, you know you found a good movie

The reason I like to think like the driver is because being quiet and contained is an easy way to stop embarrassing myself, and it feels good to be private and not run my mouth trying to explain and narrate everything. The problem is with people who take it too far and actually walk around with scorpion jackets and sunglasses and try to be edgy and mysterious. I personally used it to cope with sadness, guilt and anxiety.

That one part where you read the 4chan experiences, one of them i can painfully relate too and that's the one where the kid is asked by the professor why he's taking the class? I took an elective course when I was going to school full time and I said something embarrassingly similar to that poor kid

Excellent video. I've always thought that Drive was the spearhead of a new form of masculinity in the digital cultural landscape. You can definitely see the links between different characters of the same archetype. Someone who could be a complete incel, who's taming his emotions and channeling them into fantasy and efficiency. You can see the same in different Ryan Gosling characters such as K from Blader Runner 2049, the driver (again!) from The Place Beyond the Pines. And even a manga character such Goblin Slayer, burying his emotions in his quest to kill goblins. I'm pretty convinced we'll see more of this trope in the coming years, as it legitimizes a form of heroism in a cultural world saturated with references. The Driver manages to be relatable as a hero because we know he's listening to pop music, we know he's scared shitless deep down and burying it.

Yes i got to admit, I'm a drive fan and i did the same thing... but i really liked the stoic non-reactive character. So i started emulating myself to become a bit like him, to the point that i started reading Meditations and applying Marcus Aurelius teachings into my life... and i can say with certainty, that i'm not quite as the Driver, but the personal growth i've gained, the maturity and the social skills that came with it were astonishing, I've gained friends... learn the hard way that love should be appreciated and that sometimes you can make a difference in the lifes of the people around you.
@BananaPhoPhilly

I didn't particularly apply stoicism to my life because of Drive, but it probably reinforced it lol and I'm very glad for it. It's just a better way to deal with stressful situations, for me and many others at least

Speaking of Gaspar Noe -- any plan to do a video about any of his works? Noe's films fuck me up like nothing else. Climax made me feel like I was having a bad trip; I had to pause the film multiple times just to stay grounded. And Enter the Void put me into an existential crisis. Refn is also a genius, and Drive is one of my all-time favorite films. I didn't enjoy Only God Forgives as much... until I started to really think about it and ponder the title's meaning. And Neon Demon was a beautiful nightmare. Subbed. Looking forward to more videos.
