The film version of Fight Club directed by David Fincher, starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter, could be considered one of the best and most impactful movies ever made when looking at its reception and ongoing popularity.
Fight Club isn’t shy of over-the-top violence, contains a fair amount of explicit language, and, of course, the obnoxious behavior of its characters. However, it’s definitely more profound than just men coming together to beat each other up.
The story is built on several thoughtful concepts that are interesting and possibly applicable to our own lives.
It tells a story about a generation of people without a clear purpose, without hope, raised with false expectations, and repressed by ever-tightening social norms. What if our existence is pointless? What if God doesn’t like us? What if we’re nothing more than a compost heap? How do we find meaning in a meaningless existence?

This movie was a major pivot point in my life: it changed my whole world view. It took my nihilism and gave it an outlet. Not in fighting, but in the way I shaped my personal philosophy. Ultimately, my fight club became skydiving. I get as many of those "near life experiences" as I needed in order to turn down the volume on my nihilism.

The whole "Self improvement is masturbation, now self destruction..." quote, is explained in more detail in the book. Self improvement is a lot of work for a small reward (just like masturbation), but self destruction is the opposite, it is fairly easy to leave permanent scars, so it is little work for a big reward. If you like the dark humor in the movie, you will love the book, there are so many small hints and tidbits. That being said, it is one of the most true to the book movies ever made.

Literally just finished the book this morning and was glad to find it a close reflection. The chapter where he flies in and out of different time zones and checks his watch but loses track of time is a perfect metaphor of a social construct defined by a consumer product.

I watched Fight Club as a teen or young adult and it was like thoughts and feelings that I could not put into words were explained to me. Fight Club is one of those films that change you positively everyone should have seen it at least once. Films with such a powerful message are no longer made.

I owe a lot of what I have in life and much of who I am to this movie. I kept Fight Club playing constantly in my room while going through high school and I’m certain it altered my understanding of myself and the world. indeed consumerism will destroy us all if we let it. Capitalism is the most effective economic system yet created, but making it the only force in life will break you. It is a tool, a system, and an unfeeling machine. As it should be, you are supposed to find your own meaning outside it it and use it to achieve that meaning. Not let it be that meaning. The tragedy of the decline of religion is the rise nihilistic pseudo-philosophies that are attempting to take its place, which are offering no solutions other than more envy, hedonism, and consumerism as the supposed answers.

This is a really dope video. I like the part where it was related to how one switching from one echo chamber and cult like atmosphere can often mean just falling into another one so freedom is found in choosing to live life authentically on your own terms.

The fact that the fight club itself was simply metaphorical in the sense of enduring a lifestyle of self inflicted hardship - like taking a cold shower at 6am, doing nofap, etc. - and people took it literal and started fight clubs, armed robberies because of the movie shows you we are still space monkeys even after being shown the truth. The idea is to live authentic, be in the moment, embrace hardship, discipline and detachment, not to literally start a fight club and your own version of project mayham 🤦♂️

This is what happens when the artist does not explain his art, when they deliberately leave things untold and not specify. Unexplained art is useless art, as true art entails a clear message which when unexplained, may be misinterpreted and lost. Had there been an explanation provided, misinterpretation would not happen. It's a curse of modern art, though.

@Bogdan P Eng has made a clip on anxiety, look for it and try to incorporate it into your life. I have also suffered from anxiety for a while now too and have had bouts of depression. Mate you aren't alone, change will start with you, there's plenty of 'us' out there that can help each other. Don't give up, claw your way back because that's what i'm doing. Stay strong.

Bogdan P I understand this. I had no joke 7 months of a panic attack. There are many ways out. For me it began with stopping too much screen time, listening to music instead, going on walks, taking a good CBD oil cured my panic attacks, writing, doing art even if I suck, starting the journey to finding authentic people, seeking wisdom, going inward and facing what I was afraid of. It's refreshing to see someone who fully appreciates the wisdom in Fight Club AND the mind-traps which masquerade as freedom but are simply another sort of mind control and nihilistic self-destruction which is not healthier than the consumerism which originally trapped the narrator. I love to watch the movie, I don't want to live the movie. When I see people modeling their lives on Tyler Durden I wonder if they understood the last part of the movie at all. You have presented a balanced analysis, and I enjoyed it. Thx.

I've studied a wide variety of spiritual paths, but haven't gone deeply into Eastern traditions. I'm tickled that with all my exploring and soul-searching I reached an understanding of balance that resembles something from a teacher I never studied. "Zorba the Buddha" - I love that. The main reason I didn't dive deeply into Eastern religions was that I saw so much austerity and denial of earthly delights. I can have a sensual and spiritual experience walking barefoot on dewy grass and experiencing the delight of the earth as the grass grows. Again I thank you for introducing me to Osho, I look forward to exploring his works.

They are both masters in there own way and absolutely cannot be compared but Bhagwan shree is certainly closest to my heart. I am also deeply in love with Ekhart and sadhguru also. There’s this thing about tears … we have different types of them . The one we are in physical or emotional pain releases muscle relaxers and some sedatives that our body produces naturally. That’s why after crying we feel tired but release . Tyler was just using this fact since his doctor refused to prescribe him sleeping pills

I love how the fake left thinks this film is sympathetic to Fascism, when it is a critique of how capitalism castrates men... Many of the opponents of this film come at it from completely the wrong angle. Project Mayhem is hypermasculine and authoritarian, however it is not racist or alt right. Movie is such an inspiration. That oppressive cubical life. The sick being ignored. People living but not really doing what they love. It is what many of us face in the real world. To drop everything and "just let go" as Tyler says, feels so liberating. Let go of what your boss tells you, let go of what your family tells you, let it all go. And figure out what you want to do. We can all be greater than we can ever imagine. Listen to your voice and start creating, start living, start doing. Then do some more. Because before you die, you don't want to have any regrets. You did everything you ever wanted. You experienced and talked to, saw, created, everything you ever dreamed of.

I've seen a lot of hollow people who work 100 000$/y jobs. They take opiods, drink alcohol, can't hold onto relationship. They are trying to fill their lives with materials such as houses, cars, e.t.c. But deeply in soul they are still hollow, lost and alone. On the other hand I've seen people having a 30 000$/y job who live relaxed life within their means. They have what they want, they surround themselves with people who care about what's within them, not what's within their wallet. They use money and material things as instruments to reach something, that would bring them fulfillment and not as AN endgoal and fulfillment itself. It's really doesn't matter how much money do you make or where do you live. All that's important is how you view the world. Everything is within our heads.

With the constant "I Am Jack's" comments throughout the movie, i've always assumed that the narrator's name is Jack, referring to himself in the third person to emphasise the fact that he is completely detached from his name and self as Tyler takes further and further control.
