This scene is captured from Werner Herzog's and Dmitry Vasyukov's film "Happy People - A year in the Taiga" which is fantastic for anyone interested in the life in these remote regions. It is available on DVD.

I remember seeing an old video from 50s showing couple Finnish men making a boat in the same way.

"Happy People" is a russian film made (2008) by director Dmitry Vasiukov(NOT by Werner Herzog). Werner Herzog was never in the village of Bakhtia, I think that he was never in Siberia. Dmitry Vasiukov and cameraman real lived in the taiga(all the year round). The original film "Happy People" much much better and consists of 4 parts of 50 minutes: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. The original film (in English) you can see on the official channel Dmitry Vasyukov ukposts.info/the/SgnRwJ2jYR7o_SXCwugbMQ.htmlvideos

What a lifestyle, just awesome. Far away from all the modern bullshit and globalization we have to cope with everyday. Simple as in the good old days. Yet here I am commenting on f***ing UKposts...

Does the tar makes it waterproof and rot-free? If I am in survival situation can I use tree (or fish) oils or smoke to make it waterproof?
@energizerwolf55747 років тому
Smoke will not do it. Tar will extend the life of it a lot. They probably used "homemade " birch tar. But even petroleum based tar will do it. Or Animal fat, preferably tallow, thinner oils, like fish,chicken or pork lard will not last long. All of these , and synthetic waterproofers will help a lot, but they will not fix the bigger cracks. Smoke was not really used here. It is the heat that makes the raw wood plyable, so they can bend it. After its shape was secured (sticks across) ,then it was dried to hold the "new " shape. Same as the steam bending of wood to make furniture, or snowshoes,etc.

Smoke used in fur tanning as waterproofing that's why I thought it can help. Oil will be fine it's good. I am not interested in syntetic waterproofers - only naturals. Thanks, Áron

Wath tree is used for these canoes ??
@charlesthompson796310 років тому
looks like birch or maple, both local. Just a guess.
@aleclitvinov8 років тому
catumandos it's aspen (populus tremula). many boat builders across russia consider it the best choice for dugout canoes, because it's lightweight, easily cut and rot resistant.
@adekvate8 років тому
традиционно используют осину
@user-ec4ww9fk1k3 роки тому
In those parts this boat is called "botnick"
@ReasonAboveEverythingРік тому
In Finland they used aspen for that purpose.
