There's a bit of irony in the fact that Dead Space has died twice. After hearing this got canned for another Battlefield has me cringing so badly because that dumpster fire has killed another franchise.

2 million copies? That's £140 million!! That's a lot of money, but how much did it cost to make it?

TL;DR - The effort to force $70 price-point games is failing / has failed. $70 dollar price-point games are generally not doing well. Not really surprising considering the industry has failed to justify a $70 dollar price-point to gamers... who are, at best, skeptical due to the industry's established pattern of deceptive and greedy behavior. In fact, nearly all $70 dollar games have failed to be financially successful. There are even industry groups reporting that gamers are buying fewer new games and most are going back to playing old games.

Honestly, 2 million copies sold is somewhat of a failure for a game like Dead Space... I mean, realistically, probably less than half of the copies sold were purchased at full price... But even if they were, that's $140 million dollars GROSSED. Mind you, all of that doesn't go back to EA (storefronts get their cut)... And when all is said and done, how much money was NETTED from those sales? Maybe two-thirds of the gross, which is about 95 million. And the remake's budget was allegedly $160 MILLION dollars, not only did it not make enough to seed the development of a sequel, but it didn't even earn enough to cover the remake's development costs. Ultimately, I think Dead Space was a bad choice of game to pour that much money into... Hell, even if the budget was HALF of what was alleged it STILL wouldn't have generated enough money to justify its existence. As you said, Dead Space was already somewhat niche, and it's only gotten even more niche with time, as the entire genre has, and it doesn't have the UNRIVALED legacy of a RE2/4 to help carry it. And while the price point didn't help, there simply was no price point they could have sold it at to make it profitable, given its exorbitant development costs. Because I don't think it would have sold 5 million+ copies had it been $40... And The Remake NEEDED to move AT LEAST 5 million copies at $50 to even start the convo of a DS2 remake... And that was never in the cards.

To be honest, EA has already started becoming more like Activision in that sense. Battlefield 2042 was developed by DICE, Ripple Effect (DICA LA), Criterion, EA Gothenburg (Ghost Games). And now Motive has been brought into the fold as well...

I was really looking foward for Dead Pace 2 Remake. I payed 70$ for the first remake without even thinking about it. Love this franchise. I used to love Battlefield but they don't know what to do with those games. Really hope de reconsider.

I loved the remake but it was full price at 119.95 AUD which i thought was ridiculous I paid 50 AUD but would have been happy to pay $75-80 AUD the price point killed sales

Three issues - £70 is too high for a new release, they are pricing themselves out of the market. Second, it came out close to Resident Evil 4. Third, EA have a habit of adding their games to EA Play / Game Pass, so alot of people waited for it to come out there. All three issues together - £70 too high, choice between Resi 4 and wait for Game Pass, Dead Space had an upward hill to climb.

When you've got subscriptions and the fact everyone knows an EA game will drop in price quickly I doubt a lot of people would pay full price. They should either have priced it lower or taken account of expectations in development

The fact that the Dead Space remake came out roughly two months before the RE4 remake probably didn’t help out in terms of sales figures either. When you release two months before the highly anticipate remake of what a lot of people consider to be the best entry is a popular franchise…you’ve already got the cards stacked against you a bit

Good! Instead of remaking old games put some effort and passion into creating new IP. From Software did it with Elden Ring, Mihoyo did it with Genshin Impact. They just need a strong producer to convince their shareholders to take some risks.

Lack of solid PC version = bad long-term legs for a game. EA's been dropping the ball with PC support lately (again), and this just means you're handicapping your lifetime sales. At the same time, they did sink a AAA budget into it, and Montreal isn''t a cheap city, wages-wise. it sucks, but I can see why they aren't eager to spend more money on a franchise that just isn't giving them strong returns. The story spun out of control, b/c Grubb essentially said "Motive was all set on remaking Dead Space 2 and then EA killed it", whereas the real story was "Motive was playing around with doing soe more DeadSpace, but it wasn't ever even pitched to EA before the teams got reassigned to other projects"

Dead Space 3 sold less than 700k copies. So it made sense to say it didn't do well. But the dead space remake sold 2 million. Which foe horror games is a lot.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I never once thought thst they were remaking the trilogy. I was of the opinion that they were just remaking that one game. Like when a series comes back for a reunion episode; they arent rebooting the series. Its just one last whatever for the fans.

I waited for a Steam sale and adored it. I'm in my 3rd play through. There are only a couple of franchises I bother preordering. There are so many good games out there so that $70 price point can be off putting.

It's a money thing, if the remake of the first game didn't meet it's earnings expectations, then it was always on the cards that a remake of the sequel was never going to happen. Even if that remake was going to have elements of Dead Space 3 (in order that a remake of 3 did not need to happen) included and have a much better ending......would require more investment than EA would be willing to invest. Also that a desire to make a NEW game in the series totally unconnected with 2 or 3 but a sequel to the remake of Dead Space nonetheless existed as an idea by the same Studio...nuff said. E.A. are all about profit, and whatever generates profit, nothing more and nothing less.

They demand everything be a slam dunk and break records... and then are surprised they fail, and stop doing anything that was good, because it wasn't *that* good.

I’m always divided on the prospect of a studio like Motive being put on existing IPs. Like, clearly they have the talent to make something super cool and interesting, but, especially with EA’s historical treatment of good studios when they release something that “underperforms”, I think the relative job security that comes with working on more mid-tier projects with lower expectations in reliable franchises can be a nice break for those teams from the constant sword of Damocles hanging over their heads. That said, there’s a fine line. You need to give those teams projects with enough room for creativity for the work to be gratifying, lest you wind up with a Rareware situation. If the industry was better run, and major publishers didn’t have a tendency to shut down great studios after dropping a single risky flop, then sure, give Motive a blank canvas and let them make the next RE4, but, given the way the industry actually works… I’ll take 10 Dead Space remakes and a team of devs who don’t need a truckload of Xanax to spend quality time with their families over Elden Ring -> Grabbed by the Ghoulies -> company wide layoffs every time.

I know fans aren't going to like this, but I believe the DS remake was one of those games that while everybody claimed they were hyped for, didn't turn into actual sales? Yes, it sold relatively well and had critical and fan praise alike from those who played it, but that's my point. Everybody claimed they were hyped for it, but nobody I know actually went out and bought it. None of the streamers I watch played it... But they, too, were hyped when it was announced and followed the dev blogs. I think the price point ,and EA not marketing how much of an improvement it is over the original were major factors why it just didn't do well enough to continue more remakes, or new entries? I also think remake fatigue undercut some of the hype, too, to be blunt.

ive always found it so strange that companies in the games industry will purchase a smaller developer who makes something remarkable, then put them to work making something that isnt remarkable at all or their own original style. "ohhh Rare is good at open world 3d metroidvania games where you collect things and unlock powers to collect more things. we have to purchase that company and make them create sports titles for a motion capture device." it makes no sense. visceral, eidos, rare, and many many many more, i miss you.

EA stated the report from Grubb is false. He's not exactly 100% reliable either, while he does get things right he has also gotten a lot of things wrong recently. The Zelda ports are a good example of him messing up. Just because Motive has 2 teams now doesn't mean they won't go back to DS in the future. Let's say after Iron Man launches they will probably do it then.

I’m not sure the economics of AAA survival horror are viable in the modern gaming landscape (outside of RE, that is). The market is just too narrow and development costs are too high.

Super unfortunate! I got into dead space with the remake and it was blood brilliant!! In my opinion it was totally on par with the resident evil remakes! The $70 price really shouldn’t be the breaker… the games hiked in price since the jump from ps3 to ps4… and while I too don’t like the price hikes… as I think games shouldn’t cost more than $50… but CEO’s don’t give a crap! They all want profit now… micro transactions and digital gaming are ruining the industry… as well is multi player gaming… I love single player games and well thought out storytelling that aren’t 20-30hrs… gaming back in the day when games were 40hrs and even 100s of hours for $50 were amazing and felt worth their value! That being said the evolution in technology has lead more people working on the games and they need to get paid too… so I understand it to a degree… I also am not a huge fan of DLC cause it makes me feel like I was ripped off as if I was getting an incomplete version of the game… I’d rather developers take their time and release things when they are ready and not have to have day one patch downloads and worry about future updates… bring back the days of pop the game in and play!!

I love Dead Space, I have probably beat the game 4 or 5 times over the years and the same with Dead Space 2, but there were two reasons why I couldn't bring myself to purchase the remake. First was the price, $70 for a remake is just ridiculous it should have been $50 max and if they did that it probably would have sold a lot better. I understand a lot of work went into the remake, but its not like it is a completely new game, a lot of the hard work like figuring out a story and gameplay mechanics was already completed for them. If EA was smart they could have released this as a $50 remake to bring the people new and old in, but have the ending changed and have it offshoot to an alternate timeline with a completely new sequel which they could then charge the $70 price point. Second is the fact that it is an EA game. I have not purchased an EA title in nearly 10yrs, the last one I purchased was Mass Effect Andromeda and really the only reason I even purchased that game was because I had Best Buy points that were going to expire. If I have played any recent EA games it is only because I had received them for free from something like the Epic Game Store or as a gift. I was burned so many times by EA's games through the early 2010's that I have pretty much written them off and really I don't feel like I have missed much because of it. Each Battlefield game comes out in a worse state than the previous one and the monetization in their games is greedier than most.

Capcom should buy and develop the Dead Space franchise. It's deffo up there with RE games.

I don't demand 4k quality if it's a good game which is why I haven't gotten a PS5. That said, there are a couple new games not on the ps4, including this one that made me consider upgrading. Killing this makes me want to just hang on to my ps4 and ps3 and play those games I haven't gotten to. Plus there are still a few new ones (RE4 for example) that I can get for my ps4 so I guess I'll just hang on.

I swear, this really freakin sucks man. Dead Space is one of the most underrated /mistreated franchises of all time. This series could literally be up there with some of the horror greats like Resident Evil and Silent Hill but instead we get an amazing remake that did well critically across the board only for it to get shelved again. I hazard a guess that EA sales projections were unrealistically high for this title, probably expecting it to reach the same heights as any of the RE remakes which is ridiculous because the franchise was dormant for so long that most people forgot about it or never even heard of it, not to mention that the marketing cycle for it was piss poor as well, only three trailers, no gameplay showcase at any Microsoft or Sony event and no demo at all released before the games launch which is what RE has done for the last few years. I guess we will have to wait another decade to maybe get another game in this franchise smh

I didn't buy it because they left the platinum fairly challenging and didn't update it enough to justify that struggle.

I'm really looking forward to playing the Dead Space remake and it would be the first Dead Space ive played 🙂 But im not paying 70 smegging quid for a game lol
