More on The Lone Star Plate thelonestarplate.com
Texas Real Food - Discover Local Food in Texas www.texasrealfood.com/
In this episode, I’m joined for the second time by popular author, UKpostsr, and atheist activist Aron Ra. We talk about what being an atheist really means, why atheism has been increasing in popularity and why Aron has dedicated his life to atheist activism. We also discuss in detail the issues there are with organized religions, how people are able to accept contradictions in their beliefs, and some hypocrisies of the church that Aron identified.
Take your time and listen to this episode with an open mind and heart, because that’s what it’s all about here on The Lone Star Plate!

I was 7 years old in sunday school i asked one question and all hell broke loose . I remember feeling confused and like i was going to hell right then and there. My grandma comes down and asks me why i would embarrass my family and that i wasnt allowed back. We were learning about the miracles of Jesus and when i heard he walked on water and had food that never ran out, i asked was he a magician? Kids laughed but the pastor didnt he looked at me and said go to my office. I sat there and he came in and said " i dont think u understand that god is angered by ur constant refusal to believe. To question is to deny faith" At that moment at 7yrs old i realized it was all a hoax.

@micahfoley9572
@micahfoley9572 16 днів тому
@@Toasted_Buttons i'm referring to the ongoing debate over the validity of abrahamic religions. By and large, secular humanists are opposed to various belief systems, which they see as harmful to both the adherents and the targets of those adherents. Here lies the "humanism". Whereas theistic apologists tend to go after atheists themselves, as people. this is because atheism isn't a codified belief system, it's just a single position on a single claim, (that gods exist/can exist), and it says nothing else about a person's beliefs or ideas. There are atheistic religions, for example. So to combat atheism, if for some reason one felt that urge, you kinda have to go after individual people personally, which is why the disclaimer exists. because you can't really argue against atheism as a concept, without changing what it is. "Atheism" is the state of being unconvinced of the theistic claim that gods exist. you can't argue against someone being unconvinced, you have to actually convince them, right? so to "defeat" atheism, you'd have to demonstrate the existence of a god, to convince skeptical people that it exists. And if it was realistically possible to demonstrate the existence of a god, the word "god" would need to have a falsifiable definition, and faith itself would be made meaningless. after all, faith can only exist in uncertainty. you don't need faith to believe in things that are tangibly proven to be true. that would be called knowledge, not faith. btw preceding means "before"

@ 11:00 On fine dining: One experience I had was during an SCA event. (SCA is Society for Creative Anachronism.) We had a 13 course dinner. You brought your own tableware, but the food was provided by the event. One of the things there is you have what's called trencher bread. You use your knife to scoop vegetables onto the bread, and use the bread to soak up the liquid. So if you handled it right, you could eat the entire meal with just your belt knife. The way to survive that without overeating is to take small portions of each course. The dining hall was lit entirely by candle light. If you ever get the opportunity I highly recommend it at least once. The event I went to, we had the King of the Southern Realm present. That year, he was from my city, so that was special as well.

Minor correction: the metric system was created by the French. It began development during the French Revolution in 1790 by Charles Maurice de Talleyrand. The US slowly began importing some of these measurements and weights in the 1800s but Congress didn't officially establish its use until 1866. In 1875, the US became one of the original signatories of the Treaty of the Meter (the Metric Convention) which was lead by the French, the signing in Paris. This treaty is responsible for the establishment of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures which would eventually classify all of the units it was growing responsibility for (1921) as the International System of Units (1960). That's not to say that many in the US haven't tried their damndest to get metric integrated into public use (1968 Congressional study recommends a 10 year transition, the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 fails to implement a 10 year plan, the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 amends the 1975 act to mandate conversion for federal agencies) but the US certainly didn't _create_ metric.
@Bob-of-Zoid
@Bob-of-Zoid Рік тому
It should take 10 minutes of transition! the metric system is easy, logical, and incorporates many different types of measurements, like spacial and volumetric, energy, and all kinds of physics and what not in a cross compatible way. Fractional and weird archaic measurements are way more difficult.
@ArthKryst
@ArthKryst Рік тому
@@Bob-of-Zoid actually no, it's highly expensive to transition from 1 system to the other because not only do you need to teach that system you need to incorporate it in their daily lives, which means the road signs need to change, Avenue blocks and any information regarding distance on any American soil will need to alter which is monumental. That's why the system never got adopted

@Bob-of-Zoid
@Bob-of-Zoid Рік тому
@@ArthKryst Teaching the system is already being done here in the US and has been since I was a kid in the 60's! Only the unit of measurement changes, not any math... Signs need replacing sooner or later anyhow... Governments spend a shit load of money on stupid shit all the time, so may as well spend some on something good for a change. It would even stimulate the economy for a short time at least. And NO, that's not why it was never adopted either, try unions lobbying and people complaining about the thing they fear the most: Change! It's not like it had to happen all at once or over night, or like it's hard to learn. On the contrary, it simplifies a lot of stuff. Some countries switched from odd voltages to 220V 60 cycle to connect European grids to each other and beyond, which we should too: We need proper 3 phase, not the capacitor offset crapola we have now! At higher voltage but lower current most appliances and machinery can be made to be more efficient too. Add to that we are changing to it, just not officially, with some dragging their asses holding every one else back. It's not only more logical, but it's way more cross compatible within fields of sciences and engineering, because of the logic used in how the system was made to begin with in choosing values of individual units, and being base 10. Like 1cm^3 (1cl) of water heated by 1 degree C takes 1 W energy... In the end, it's much easier to work with and less prone to error too! I know that in industry, and a world economy, not switching has only complicated things with drawings often now having both, fasteners and what not coming in either or... I design and build guitars and have to deal with both systems all the time, rather than with one well unified one, and whole industries have to do the same.
@ArthKryst
@ArthKryst Рік тому
@@Bob-of-Zoid I'm not denying the utility of it, but it's not as easy to implement as you think it is because there's a lot of spending involved and with the current scenario of how funds are distributed in U.S. it is impossible to implement it

18:10 I'm with Aron Ra 100% on this point. This is a major limitation of debates and the main reason I usually don't find them helpful in advancing knowledge. When people make claims or present evidence to support claims, it takes research and _time_ to do a thorough review. The time simply isn't there in a debate. If the topic of the debate is very narrow and decided in advance, that can help some. But that's not typically how debates are done now. Debates very often just degenerate into a competition to see which party has the cleverest comeback or does the best gish gallop.

Mr. Aaron Ra. When you mentioned you do not have a family, I really and truly wished I had a father like you. If I were a member of your family I truly admired your courage and your intelligence. Because I am trying to be with my son, a father, just like the way you are, of course, considering that I cannot be exactly the way you are. I am trying to teach my son to think the way you think: logically, scientifically and secularly. Thank you for your amazing dedication to free our minds.

I am embarrassed to say that I, a physician, used to "suspend my disbelief" of the ridiculous claims in the Bible (i.e. talking snakes, donkeys, etc) and followed the "teachings of Christ." But then I came across Aron Ra, Mike Delihunty, Christopher Hitchens, and began to QUESTION the ridiculousness of Slavery (which negatively affected my ancestors for over 400 years), the allowance of hunger, violence against women, and the failure to believe THE SCIENCE OF EVOLUTION which all in combination WOKE ME UP from the pure fallacy of the existence of a god. I wish I had been awakened from the nonsense 30 years ago!

Aron Ra has the most logic and common sense of anyone I have ever seen. Atheists aren't about putting down religious people. their about pointing out the stupid shit they say. I would point everyone to check out Aron Ra. the truth is you won't be sorry. if believing in God is so great? believing in Carl Sagan should be much greater because he was real. Anthony Freemont is similar to the Star Trek episode. where whatever you think about happens. and the moral of the story is you should be very careful what you think about. George Harrison is my favorite of the Beatles also. believing God is exactly the same as having an imaginary friend. Carl Sagan is a huge inspiration to me. religion is based on how easily you can be bullshitted. I don't have the ability to be charismatic but I'm still an Atheist. Aron says to the dog do you mind. I bet he would he flip if the dog said yes. LOL. if God were to show himself to me. I would have some serious questions for him. like why did you make some people's lives so miserable. but I know that will never happen. in the end all I can say is Aron Ra is AWESOME!!!!!

There's a bit of a question as to who "invented" the metric system, but it was not America John Wilkins, an English clergyman, and brother-in-law to Oliver Cromwell, first wrote about it two years before Gabriel Mouton, who is considered by many to be the founding father of the metric system. In 1670, (107 years before America was founded) Mouton proposed a decimal system of measurement that French scientists would spend years further refining. In 1790, the national assembly of France called for an invariable standard of weights and measurements having as its basis a unit of length based on the Earth’s circumference. As a convenience, the system would be decimal-based, with larger and smaller multiples of each unit arrived at by dividing and multiplying by 10 and its powers.

I live in far west Texas and although I’m grateful it’s not the Bible Belt it ain’t as secular as the Pacific Northwest either and most people here are nominally Catholic at least, before moving here I grew up on the other side of the Rio Grande in the state of Chihuahua in a pretty conservative Catholic family and I took that north where not only did I double down on the religiosity but also started ironically getting influenced from the Protestant fundamentalists I despised so much so I was basically a fundamentalist Catholic who also went to the Mass still done in Latin and all the politics that accompany it (something rarely found back in Mexico but I’ve noticed it’s influential in American Catholicism). It was only back in late 2019 when my faith finally fell apart and I basically had to put my life back together piece by piece and it wasn’t until last year when I finally realized I was an atheist after listening to one of Aron Ra’s videos of all things so being a Mexican American atheist feels like being a minority within a minority while also wondering if I betrayed my cultural background (more recently I’ve started reading more about Mexican secularism and I’ve learned that while Texas was still part of Mexico Catholicism was the state religion, which at least de jure being Protestant was pretty illegal, but I imagine that was rarely enforced up here since I don’t recall reading most of the settlers actually converting) so thank you for sharing this interview with the world. I go to the local Unitarian Universalist community because that’s the closest thing there is to a secular/Humanist community so I’m technically still religious, I like to hang Tibetan prayer flags for decoration (so I guess that’s the closest thing to praying for me) and sometimes burn incense but it’s way less devotion to what I used to do while I was a Catholic, contemplating the night sky is what I do now as well. 42:37 and I think this is the main reason why Pascal’s Wager falls apart, one time back in college I got into an argument with a Southern Baptist missionary and we were throwing back arguments back and forth about which one of us was going to hell, it’s possibly the most absurd situation I’ve ever been because neither of us were getting any closer to the truth and if Islam is true then the both of us were damned anyways no matter how devout we were. During those years I was also very, very repressed because I was told having sexy thoughts would lead me to hell and what hurts the most about Purity Culture for me is knowing I missed out on many things for nothing in the end, this is the one thing I’ll probably never forgive the Catholic Church for because the shame served no purpose other than to control the flock probably (and the audacity of celibate men to dictate what our sex lives should be like while all the abuse is going on!). After my deconversion I was very depressed because my mental health was already very poor while I was a Catholic (Catholic guilt after all) and having to rebuild my own identity, purpose and other things from scratch was a huge blow and I nearly offed myself because I felt I had nothing left to live for (and it didn’t help that I wanted to be a priest for a long time but now that possibility was gone) but my sister, who left years earlier, is one of the reasons why I’m still here and in part I keep on living out of spite to the people I left behind and because I refuse to be made an example of to discourage others from leaving (when you’re told it’s impossible to have a happy and meaningful life without god and their group it can become a set fulfilling prophecy for some who leave). Since I consider myself a Humanist as well now I try to have hope in the future as awful everything is now.

1:39:42 "I know this [thing I've just said] is not true, but I choose to believe it anyway".. "At that point, what can you do with that?" For me.. first, the only reason I'm participating in that discussion is because someone has asked me why I don't believe, or has made some unfounded or inaccurate claim about what I do/don't believe or why.. so I'm in the conversation to explain or defend my viewpoint. Consequently, if the conversation turns to what they believe and their determination to believe it even in the face of knowledge that it is false, I tell them "That's fine. I am not here to tell you what to believe or to suggest that YOU apply my standard of evidence to your beliefs. I don't even care that you choose to believe something you say you know is untrue. I'm here because you asked me why I don't, or you made some inaccurate claim about me and how I see things. I hope you understand why I CAN NOT DO what you just said you do, and I hope you can acknowledge that I have a RIGHT to disbelieve anything which I know is false or for which I see no credible evidence of its truth.. and I hope you can recognize that I have absolutely no obligation to believe anything that has no credible evidence to show its truth."
