The pattern is the laws of physics. The previous universe was an abstract world of concepts and negotiated relationships between them. For example, people gained the ability to swim in water by conceding to water the power to drown them. It was a place ruled by platonic ideals. All of that was wiped away when the universe was recreated with concrete predetermined rules that everything had to obey. Some of the inhabitants of the previous universe survived by entering the pattern and sacrificing much of their conceptual properties to become physical beings, such as the bamboo people. Others fled to edges of reality and became screaming nonentities trapped in the void under and between existence as we know it.

Send a D class into 3930 and have them look at a picture of SCP 096, boom he's terminated no problem.

So basically, pattern screamers are the nonexistent remains of a advanced race that came before our universe. And these bones of the void are just screaming, begging for their existence to be acknowledged, even though they don't actually exist. This is why i love the mythos of the SCP foundation.

seeing as how 3930 is an actual void, it probably has a hume level of 0. the "chalky skin" the d class was feeling may have been his hume levels balancing out with the void and him slowly fading into non-existance, and the only thing keeping anchored to some form of reality is that people are currently watching him

How I see them: There are two types of existence. Existence A: what the screamers experienced in the previous universe. We consider it nonexistence. Existence B: our reality and version. The pattern subjected them to existence B. Some were able to escape this through merging and other what have you’s and maintain some form of existence A, albeit it’s some mix of A and B. However, humans, particularly through observation, are forcing them to convert to existence B more fully. This is why they hate us. They hate existence B and want existence A. We are taking away existence A and forcing upon them existence B. The only way for them to keep their way of existing is to get rid of us, which they can’t do unless they have enough existence B to interact with and kill us.

What I get out of this is that it quite literally implies humanity has this innate power to give existence to nonexistence quite like how we constantly create entire universes of fiction all to simply combat our ever growing disease of boredom and if humanity was truly advanced enough to create BILLIONS OF HEART SHAPED PLANETS I can only imagine humanity at that stage would be exeedingly bored due to our extreme power kind of like the star eyed child who finds literal godhood boring what I mean is that at the end of the day like always our fate us our own to forge and the pattern screamers can only hurt us if we truly wanted them to.

I thought I had read an SCP about there being levels of reality. I seem to remember that The Pattern was consuming its way "up" through the various levels; ours was maybe seventh or eighth out of ten, or something like that. Some entities in a lower level identified The Pattern and its risk, so they escaped into a higher reality. To do this they had to shed their forms, and their consciousness was imprinted onto the fabric of our reality: the spacetime or quantum foam or geometry of our universe. So they became trapped in this state of not-really-existing, which is horrifying to them. They are scared and hateful, and because they cannot exist, they desperately scream so they can be perceived.

This concept reminds me of the Fallen from Demon: the Fallen. They were the angels that created the universe to God's design, but then God asked them to both love humanity and never interfere with them, leaving them forced to helplessly watch dumb apes blunder through the world incapable of appreciating the work they created. A faction rebelled, deciding to teach humanity what it needed and starting a war that destroyed Paradise. These Fallen lost the war and were thrown into the Abyss, the antithesis of the universe, where nothing existed but the Fallen and their own hatred, for God, His angels, humanity, each other, and themselves.

This kind of reminds me of The Worm from Stellaris. A being breaking through from nothingness intent on destruction and devouring everything there is or ever will be.

I’d always just thought of 3930 being simply a “cosmic blind spot” that was “filled in” by human minds, with some unfortunate non-entities within being harmed by our psychic interference on their non-home. Didn’t realize that my vague familiarity with the term “pattern screamer” wasn’t just an occurrence of deja vu, but was because I’d read it in various other SCP articles (eg the star hearts and unlondon). I just figured the apartment building in 3930 out. I thought it was weird that there could be anything but local flora and fauna since that is all one might expect to see, but what if the "landing site" where the screamer arrived was nearby the future apartment complex and was about the size of a golf ball? One day someone was [insert every day activity] nearby the complex, let's say walking their dog, and the dog stepped on the golf ball sized anomaly, the person continued to drag the empty leash until they were back inside, turned to unleash the dog and noticed the dog was missing. That's one person who knows about it. They tell their friends that a hole in the universe swallowed their dog, their friends tell friends, and with each retelling the screamer got bigger and that's how GRU division P found out. Since then no fewer than 6 people have ever been aware of 3930, which is why it has remained around the size of an apartment complex.

You get existential horror In these entities that are basically consciousnesses without form and then spice it up with particle physics themed idea that things aren’t real until you observe them and then add that thing our brains do where we seek to find order in chaos and make sense of nonsense. Generally, the idea of pattern screamers as being from "previous iteration of universe" being basically incompatible with our universe and reshaped into something else, (imagine 8-dimentional hypercube squeezed into 2D circular opening, leaving a tiny sliver of what was it originally was) is an idea that I love. It was even in some way used in Doctor Who universe, with various entities who claim to be such.

The void reminds me of that movie that came out recently, Annihilation, in which a group of researchers enter a strange electromagnetic field that distorts DNA, causing things like writhing intestines, humans turning into human-shaped bushes, and animals that have mutated to perfectly imitate human voices. It's interesting.

This has got to be THE most deep, intricate and well written SCP I've ever heard. Absolutely love this one!

My theory on the Pattern Screamers is that, like others have posited, they are from a previous reality, but that we have an idea about what the “patterns” are. In short, their reality underwent vacuum decay, an event triggered by a quantum particle reaching a lower energy state thought impossible to those in reality and causing all other quantum particles to shift to this lower energy state. This lead to what we know as the Big Bang, the emergence of their “pattern” and our reality. No matter how much they scream, they exist in a different reality than us, and as such, will scream until they fade away.

By far the greatest SCPs that I've ever known; when I first watched this I didn't have much of an understanding of it, but now I appreciate them as possibly the greatest race of SCPs to my knowledge. May their screams enlighten new minds to their hope.

Whenever “pattern” is mentioned, I think of the Vex from Destiny. If are willing to believe the Darkness’s account of how the universe came to be, then the Vex could be considered a type of Pattern Screamer, at least according to the definitions presented in this SCP video, that managed to achieve a physical presence.

I don't know how all this time I haven't heard of the pattern screamers before, this is a very good concept in the foundation.

I just had an epiphany moment while walking to the train station about pattern screamers. I think the pattern is not a physical or cosmic entity that threatens life in the universe. It’s a pattern of characteristics and behaviour that wiped out the world. Something akin to the great filter hypothesis. To put into a context: Our pattern would be something like total nuclear annihilation. And pattern screamers would be the children born during earths destruction. They fought through the chaos, were born into it and escaped out of it. So it’s like this: the pattern is a sequence of events or behaviour that lead to an all encompassing destruction, and those who survived through it were shaped by it, and when compared to an entirely alien society, they look like insane and completely distorted

It seems like Pattern Screamers sounds like a Lovecraftian creature. Its properties resemble strongly of Azathoth. If too many people are aware of it, it wakes up and ends all existence. I assume Azathoth would be considered a lesser creature from the Pattern. Pattern Screamers sounds like a cosmic horror that would make HP Lovecraft proud. Pattern Screamers don't all seem to be toxic to existence, much like how not all Lovecraftian creatures are toxic to existence.

This is an AMAZING SCP! The things that could be done with it is astounding! What if the Sarket God is a resurrected Patten Screamer!? Or the book with unknown SCP entries!? My only gripe with this is... Doesn't this conflict with SCP 1000? Or was the fall of humans the cause of SCP rising to power in the first place? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

I remember the first time I watched this I was coming down from lsd. All I can say is that it makes sense and I still enjoy this scp the most.

3930 is confusing to read, but when you disregard a lot of the fluff it makes sense. We can perceive something in the void because of the way the human mind works. You see, the human mind is actually quite slow when it comes down to each individual neuron, it's just that each of them working in tandem is capable of achieving a goal rather quickly. Part of a sacrifice for this speed, however, is precision. The brain tends to think in leaps and bounds, filling in a lot of the information as it goes. This is what leads to optical or auditory illusions, which are essentially just our brain attempting to make sense of confusing or foreign stimuli and failing. This same idea can be applied to the void. Since the void is surrounded on all sides by what humans can logically perceive, the brain assumes that this missing piece must simply be a continuation of everything around it, and fills in the gaps by making it seem as if something exists there. In fact, the idea of absolute nothingness--even lacking the very idea of nothing--is so foreign to our human understanding that it actually fills in for more than just our eyes, filling in information even for the lack of sound, which you assume must be there, since it is not possible for something that did exist to simply cease to be, right? Hence the D-class that seemed to be speaking, but had really ceased to be as soon as he walked into that void. Since humans tend to "fill in the gaps" in roughly the same way, the two scientists had believed they were hearing the same thing over the audio equipment, when in fact nothing had been said at all. It is like a much more complex version of the ringing you can hear when everything is completely and utterly silent, which is your brain creating noise where none exists to fill the void.
