Mercedes reliability advantage in late turbo hybrid era meant their overtake mode's were much more free to extract power from them. to the point Fia targeted them directly. Now engine must be tuned to race spec. only battery boost is allowed
@edk11246 місяців тому
We are still on turbo hybrid era
@randomesteven39352 місяці тому
Overtake mode is battery boost. The reason overtake mode isn't used as often is because it drains the battery much more quickly. In qualifying, the deployment the electrical boost (both MGU-H and K) is pre-mapped to deliver boost in certain section of the track. This is done to ensure battery last the entire lap. Overtake mode drains it in like, half a lap or less at full power, which is useless in qualifying. What you're thinking of is fuel trim. And that's called engine modes. Engine modes/fuel trim and still be changed during a race in case oddities in the engine sensors are detected but it should not increase power, merely change driveability.

@strange_jason7 місяців тому
Overtake deploys the max amount of electric power, it doesn't alter the engine power, that is done by engine mapping and engine mapping is determined on a race to race basis or if there is a substantial amount of wear or heat in the engine.
@yelistener7 місяців тому
This is the case since 2021 ICE mode ban. Before that, ot button could also change the engine mapping like fuel mixture.
@alsa4real7 місяців тому
Doesn't overtake mode allow the exhaust gases to bypass thebturbo through the wastegate, so that there's lesser back pressure meaning maximum ICE power? It also means the MGU-H will have to spin the turbo.
@Morgan-iv4ye7 місяців тому
@@yelistenerDo you think this could also have something to do with redbulls advantage since 2021?
@Belril7 місяців тому
@@Morgan-iv4yeYes, in two ways. IMO Verstappen wouldn’t have been champion in ‘21 without this rule change, which was aimed at curbing Mercedes’ dominance. And yes, it also means that teams don’t have as much ability to make up for poor aero concepts by just running their ICEs at max power for parts of the race and then dialing them back for others.

3 engine per season made it impossible.
@SheetFiber7 місяців тому
But for season 2021 Mercedes had taken several times of 10 grid penalty for changing the internal combustion engine. I believe it was to allow Hamilton for running at near full power from after the summer break (was it Spa?) until Abu Dhabi.
@Infigo967 місяців тому
Since 2022 season the party modes and overtake modes, ala merc 2021 interlagos monster is gone. They have to stick with a power mode on the icu. If it is for a whole weekend or they have some leaniency and need to keep that mode for a certain majority. The electric motors they have full control over which mode and power in the race but it is not as powerful as icu+ electrics in a overtake party mode. And less engines total also limits the use of party mode
@wojtekpawowski89137 місяців тому
@@Infigo96 yes, that's right with the ICE settings; the problem is the battery in general - it will never have enough capacity to give full power all the race and the energy will always have to be managed :( and there is also the matter of tyres. My point is that lapping ~5 seconds or more slower in the race than in quali is just ridiculous 🤷🏿

What about press and hold, does it give out more power or it's just a separate way of activating by various teams?
@hankfields63267 місяців тому
some teams use press and hold some just use a simple button
@strange_jason7 місяців тому
Pretty sure most PTP (push to pass) buttons in various race cars are hold buttons instead of toggle buttons. This ensures that the driver doesn't "misclick" and accidentally keep the ERS on full deploy. Race cars that have a PTP system usually have it on an ERS (hybrid) system - it controls the electrical output of the ERS system, it doesn't boost the ICE power as the poster claims.
@Belril7 місяців тому
Each team has its own OT button setup, so it differs by car. At least for McLaren, a single press will override the energy harvesting settings of the hybrid system, while a longer press will deploy energy and increase speed.

@strange_jason7 місяців тому
If I'm not wrong, pretty much all F1 teams use a hold button for overtake rather than a toggle.
@headp314 днів тому
So there is an obvious and easy fix, these cars are basically mobile computers, should be easy to program a certain amount of times both DRS and speed boost can be used in 1 race and also have the GPS in the cars regulate when and where these features can even be used. Or even easier and more fun to watch is get rid of all that crap and let the cars and drivers fully race again.

New to F1 - If the engine runs at full power for qualifying, does this mean typically the fastest lap times are in qualifying? As they conserve the battery throughout the entirety of the actual race?
@russko11828 днів тому
they are faster in quali, before 2021 it was even more difference nowadays is mosty weight of the fuel (you have to do the full race on a full tank, quali is with minimal fuel) and tire management (in quali you don't do it so you go even faster). battery recharges under breacking (not only but mostly) so the battery recharges and can be deployed for extra power
