In this video, we meet Jeff, Rose, and their 5 girls who are living completely off grid on a 40-acre piece of land in Northern British Columbia, Canada. They built their own off-grid house for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof. The house was so affordable to build because they didn't have to excavate or pour a concrete foundation, dig a well, or install a septic system.
They have 2 solar power systems to power everything they need. The first solar system is just one solar panel that generates 12-Volt power for their lights, cell phones, and music player. The larger system is a 2.5 Kilowatt solar power system installed on their shop roof with a lithium ion battery bank that powers their full-sized fridge, a chest freezer, washing machine, as well as a mixer, blender and a toaster. They have a backup generator but they only have to use it for about 40 hours per year during prolonged cloudy or snowy periods.
All of the water the family uses is rainwater collected from their shop roof and stored in a tank under the shop floor to keep it cool. They carry buckets of water into the house for cooking, dishes and showers. To produce clean drinking water, they filter their rainwater in a passive water filter called a Burkey (check them out here: www.berkeyfilters.com).
The grey water from their kitchen sink and shower drains into a shallow grey water field in the backyard.
They have 2 composting bucket toilets and they sprinkle sawdust into the buckets after each use to absorb moisture and prevent smells.
For heat, they cut their own firewood for their Blaze King catalytic wood stove, and for their antique cookstove in the kitchen that they use for cooking and baking.
Jeff and Rose homeschool their 5 girls for a few hours each day and also ensure that their kids are learning diverse life skills like growing their own food, caring for horses, raising bees, and more.
We're very impressed with the clever solutions this family has come up with to make off-grid living seem so easy.

There's lots of us women who are so up for living like this,I agree finding them may feel difficult but we exist.I have always been out with men who are very capable and were all into buying land to do this on.Sadly those relationships didn't work out;I am with, and had 2 children with someone I thought would love to live like this, even gave me the impression he would.8 years on,he watches T.V. And that is about it.And I am working out how to leave him and follow myy dream-thinking to myself ''how the hell do I do this now!'' haha.My point is-you will find someone-keep her in mind then stop looking and get busy.I only ever get together with good partners once I get busy with my own stuff and stop looking. :)

Albrecht Weyrother Thank you for that heart felt comment. I find as I get older my opinions are aligning more and more with what you wrote. How I wish I could have grown up in a more complete home. As a child I could see some of what was missing. I tried to correct that in my own family. Circumstances didn't allow me to complete that eather. I am a grandmother of 12 now and live a 1000 miles from my family. I do what I can given the distance and my declining physical health. I verbally and emotionally support my children's dreams and encourage then in the raising of their children. Most people have no conception what it is like to grow up in a home like that, or how to go about developing it. They don't even know what is missing!)

You should look into thermosiphon water heater, could have an insulated tank on the roof and have low pressure hot water with 0 moving parts. Run that bad boy of the back of your wood heater.
7 років тому
Simply coiling about 8 feet of 1\2 inch copper tubing around the smoke stack and with the top outlet feeding into the top of an overhead holding tank, with an outlet on the bottom feeding back into the copper coil would give you plenty of hot water, The hot water will rise through the coil and into the tank, and the cooler water will be recirculated automatically. This way, as long as you had a separate cold water tank above also, you could use a regular fixture and adjust your water temps.

Penelope416 Its not free of worries. Don't think that. Things usually go from 1 problem to another. You solve 1, and the onset of another comes. The way these people are living is ideal, and is a worthwhile goal. I love it. You can get a cabin, or a homestead for a decent price. And began to slowly transition off-the-grind. Don't jump into it. Go slow....handle your affairs in open society, and then slowly transition.

We had a propane fridge and propane stove, kerosene lamps, a generator for movie night on Sunday. Collect water from a stream, go on crown land and load up on firewood in the fall. Same idea for a gravity fed shower, with water heated up on the stove. I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel. Hot water is not actually an issue off grid. You can boil or use a solar water heater, or other methods. AC is not important if you live in a cooler climate, but you can build things like swamp coolers, or get a small window unit that can be also powered with solar, or a misting system. Though insulation is key to getting the most out of it.

Really you don't have to, the sun is free energy. All it takes is 2000 watts of 24 volt panels and a 2500 watt inverter by outback with to run a whole house with everything you have now. I even run forced air and a 50 gal water heater and stove. Double door fridge and washing machine. Three flat screens and a robot vacume cleaner. I say this because I've been off grid for over 25 years on 40 aceares.

@SSingh-nr8qz 5 років тому
@@ashforkdan - Location is quite important though. I live up in BC Canada, Solar is hit and miss up here. It's mostly an issue with intensity of the sun, cloudy days, snow etc. I generate my power through a mix of solar, wind and micro hydro. I also use some geothermal and thermal mass on some walls to heat water and the space I'm in. The reality is when it comes to being off grid , you REALLY need to be in tune with your natural environment.

I also want to keep bees, and preserve everything I can. I am 62 and live alone, so it is a bit of work, but I love it. I just moved here in October, so I am really enjoying the first spring here, and discovering all the lovely plants that came with my new really small home. This family is doing the right thing, but it’s not for everyone.

I have no qualms at all with people choosing to live this way, clean and natural, with their kids. There are so many kids obsessed with pop culture with parents too self absorbed to stop taking selfies to care. It doesn't look extreme, just clean. They've got modern jeans and t-shirts on, doing school work on laptops, the dad's on youtube. Honestly, the kids will be given the opportunity to continue this lifestyle or not when they're older. I've seen teens working at McDonalds who grew up with all the modern conveniences, who went to "regular" schools, who can't even do simple math or has decent mannerisms. No harm done at all.

Wrong as that was it is also very telling...With what's REALLY going on in schools today, this is the only way to go.

@@watenallace663 The socialization argument is way out to pasture. Public schooled children are with their same age group all day long, every day. That's just the way it is, so if any kids are stifled, it's them. Our kids met all age groups at the library, on field trips, with the support groups, with the grandparents & other family members & anyone else they came in contact with on a daily basis. Homeschooled kids are well adjusted individuals that enjoy spending time with all age groups, because that's what they are used to. 💜

I’d worry only about the isolation. Because even though people did live like this, there were always other families with them. Humans needed to do this so it’s pretty ingrained in our psyches to be surrounded by a healthy number of other humans. From the very beginning even up through the Middle Ages, the worst punishment any human could give another was banishment.

@Jewel Clark A bit absolutist / extreme in your views Jewel, wouldn't you say? If you are into off grid living, I'll assume that you like being close to nature. If you observe nature closely, you'll note that everything is balance. Extremes are rare. Books: they're not so bad you know? And whilst direct living will often teach you much of what you need...it's also limited. Sometimes you'll learn how to do something from your kinfolk. But picking up a book, taking a course, might help you to be more efficient, more productive, survive more easily. 'Academic Knowledge' can prolong your life and ease your suffering too. Surely you understand / accept that?

It is possible. People like us with this very background growing up, it makes it easier for us. But one can't just get a partner only for that reason. What if he/she is rude, untidy, lazy, sad, controlling, violent, aggressive and other factors could be the kind of religion he/she is. Christian or other. Am not saying one could get all the good characters on a silver platter cos some are very good to hide it, but there is a choice here. For instance, I don't like lazy and untidy/unclean men. I can't imagine myself with one in a place like that. If not I have to be the slave tidying up and doing all the handy work around for him all the time. Playing a wife and a handy man. What🙄

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the video, particularly because it is so similar to my world. As a single mom, 10 years ago I moved to the Maritimes from Ontario, with my 7 year old son, built a small place on a big piece of land, bought 216 watts worth of solar panels from Costco and began our off-grid adventure. We also haul water, heat with firewood and use a compost toilet. About 5 years ago I managed to bring my solar system up to a kilowatt, which allows us to run a freezer through the day (though I unplug it at night). So yes, one does need a much bigger system to run a fridge and freezer (someone questioned that in the comments). Anyhow, wonderful to see your story. My son was not home schooled, but is graduating this year and heading off to college in B.C. At this moment, he is very tired of our way of life, but hopefully all he has experienced will be of value to him later in life. Looks like you guys have done a terrific job balancing family and off-grid living!
