Here's an alternate idea: what if Moana's demigod status was cause of Tui and not Maui? Remember, Tala is Tui's mother, and we just established that Tala is the goddess of the stars, so it's likely hereditary, but the twist is that Teui doesn't know it, or at least is trying to ignore it for as long as he's trying to protect Moana from the sea (see what I did there)😅

Very nice, I know next to nothing about Polynesian mythologies so I would believe it if you told me there's a story of a human, pig and rooster being the children of an eel and a hummingbird. But apart from Maui being on an island for forever while the mother was supposedly human everything seems seamless :) And yes, Disney does put a lot of effort into their animations!

Would've been cool if matpat actually flew to a Polynesian island to meet with the actual gods and find out for himself.

Many people keeps asking, "why the sea is trying to hit her in the first time she was leaving the island?" I belive its because her grandmother had the heart stone, and the sea wasnt going to let her leave in a pointless adventure without it.

Who would've expected Moana to have such a deep story, the movie was great, but I didn't expect this much detail to the actual lore.

First time around I was too focused on what was going on, the amazing visuals and such... but second time I've picked up on that "no mortal can enter Lalotai" myself! The fact that Moana had already, unknowingly, become a Goddess by that point - but more likely since the moment the ocean chose her - is literally the only sensible explanation for her surviving that fall, the impact with the water, and what happened afterward!

I think this theory could work!! The evidence that Matt shared here is great, and I have noticed that both Maui and Moana share a few genetic traits as well. BUT -- I've recently rewatched the movie and I started thinking about this thepry as I was watching, up until the scene where it showed the stones on the mountain of Motunui, which represents all of the people who took on the role of cheif after Maui caused the oceans to become too ruthless to voyage- in multiple scenes you can see the several generations (I counted over 10 for sure) that were there after Maui took the heart- so either Moana, Pua and their mother are a thousand years old and don't look the part (which seems unlikely since nobody else acknowledges it) or Maui would have had to be on the Motunui Island and NOT stranded on his own island after he took the heart in order for this theory to make sense. The theory of Maui and Moana being related is literally one of my faves, but I think I accidentally debunked it just bc I rewatched Moana as a comfort film lmfao, anyone got any other ideas of how they could be related?

I think another fact that points to Moana being a god (not DEMIgod) is when Tamatoa says in his song: "But you can't expect a demigod to beat a decapod" And, in the movie, it's actually Moana who "defeats" Tamatoa by tricking him and then running away. I hope you see this MatPat.

Sup I’m from NZ which is the country of the native Māori people (me included) I love this episode as sometimes people FORGET NZ of maps altogether so Matpat talking about Māori mythology is amazing and humorous as some words were mispronounced 😅
