They already tried this in the show and homelander told them he'd rather be loved then feared but if they ruin his reputation he has no problem being feared because he has nothing left to lose at that point. So I don't think it's his greatest weakness anymore....

At best, it might be a way to try to control him. Make his PR team into a bunch of fatalist "we're all going to die anyway" types who wouldn't be afraid of telling the world about the man behind the image. He still wants to be loved though he'd settle for being feared, and they'll give him the adoration platform he wants if he sticks to the script they lay down for him.

I loved the theory but as other people have pointed out once Homelander's brand is ruined there's nothing holding him back. As Homelander said "sure I'll lose everything, but then I'll have nothing to lose"

Yes his brand has also been tied to his weakness (severe psychological problems/narcissisism). His emotional and mental weakness and craving for adoration and love has been consistently the only thing short of tricking him that the protagonists and other villains have been able to exploit prior to S3

The actual way to beat Homelander is probably a supe like Mindstorm. Homelander might be physically strong, but his mind is clearly a weak point and just putting him in a constant nightmare seems like a sure fire way to defeat him. From there you can send him into the vacuum of space towards the Sun to perish.

that was i thinking too when i watched that episode. Homelander can hear heartbeat and sense body temperature,that would be difficult. I mean the supe who can explode heads could take him out easily too,but she needs him for her own plans

@@asiamarillshe cant, she tried it on starlight but she only got a bit of a nosebleed, remember the scene after she exploded bunch of peoples heads? Homelander is strong enough to negate her power completly given that he is much stronger than starlight

Nah , mindstorm could only stun sb for a few seconds and home lander is a far stronger supe so its not possible

@@shivamjha5578 It hasn't been shown that Mindstorm couldn't do it in his younger age. As Mindstorm got older, he could not manipulate other supes, only regular humans as his powers became less potent. However, when his powers were at their apex in his prime at a young age, he probably could, especially with how mentally unbalanced Homelander is. The fact that Soldier Boy was afraid of Mindstorm's powers, still tells you that he remembers his younger self being a threat to him personally. We also saw in Gen V that Cate could trap other supes in her mind, so again a supe like Mindstorm or Cate has a very real possibility of at least knocking Homelander out for a while, maybe long enough for another supe to either take away his powers like Soldier Boy can by blasting the Compound V out of him or by pushing him toward the sun out into the vacuum of space as Homelander still has to breathe and likely can't fly in space.

the biggest issue with this is, they address this in the show, starlight tries to blackmail homelander, destroy his brand, but he just shrugs it off, explaining that while he loves his brand, he would just be fine with taking control back by force, describing how hed destroy the world

He doesn't just say that he'd be "fine with it," he goes so far as to say he's being held back by his reputation and that without it he'd have no reason to keep pretending to be a good guy. Almost implies part of him WANTS something to happen to his reputation so he doesn't have to behave anymore.

What I find interesting is that if you were to destroy homelanders brand, he would actually go farther off the deep end than he already has. In the show he said that if they destroyed his brand that he’d have nothing left to lose (or something like that) so it would open up a whole new problem for the show with him just being a flat out supervillain. Interesting as always matpat ❤

He has already said he would go "scorched earth" if people began to hate him as at that point he'd have nothing to lose. However a small point mentioned in the show is that Zinc is apparently the one and only thing that he cannot use his x-ray vision to see through. This is the only "weakness" he's been confirmed to have.

You could have theorized Hughie teleporting Homelander near the Sun and leaving him to be pulled in by it's immense gravity. Even if Homelander was able to break away from the gravity (highly doubtful), he wouldn't be able to breathe in space. Or Hughie can attempt to teleport himself inside of Homelander, essentially destroying everything in his body.

The Second would be akin to putting yourself in a shrinking titanium cube. You'd be crushed to death. Inside out attacks won't work as he's just as durable in and out. Also if hughie even for milliseconds goes near the sun he will burn to a crisp. So it would be a self sacrifice attack

For the first time in a while, Pat missed. This theory was addressed in the show with Starlight trying to blackmail Homelander, who simply stated that he'd take power by force and wipe out entire cities if he must. So this is definitely NOT the way they're gonna have to bring Homelander down.

This is just kinda like a filler theory where he goes over a bunch of random stuff and tries to loop them together for a clickable video, it’s nothing new really he sorta has to put these out until the time comes for a bigger theory. Even still, the power scaling stuff in the first half of the video was good, I think he should do more stuff like that because he doesn’t really have to consider the wider context and story of the show to do fun calculations of how far man throw thing.

It's also entirely possible that he was bluffing solely to prevent Starlight from releasing the tape. It was quite an easy bluff to pull off, considering Starlight legitimately cares about humanity.

Hey Matpat,the jet Homelander threw in the comics was AV-8B Harrier which at empty weight is roughly 6,700lbs lighter than the F-16. Just noticed that mistake, love listening to ya theories!

This "weakness" is addressed in the show when Starlight threatens to blackmail him. As Homelander himself says (something to the effect of), "I'd rather be loved, but I'll settle for being feared." The fact that he cares about his reputation is the only thing that keeps him in check, but that can only be exploited so far. If he loses that, he would likely just go on a rampage. So robbing him of the adoration that he craves would actually be the worst thing you could do.

His brand/reputation was a weakness at first but yes he outgrew that as he started to take control of both Vought and his own life, but the change was initiated not by a spontaneous corporate/PR takeover but by the realization that he has a family bloodline. He literally seized power upon finding out that he was lied to and not actually infertile/impotent. So therefore, his real weakness once the brand goes away is his attachments to his humanity, specifically things like family, having a son or father or mother figure. The father & mother figure boats may have sailed so it seems now that his main weakness will be Ryan, and I mean that not just as in he loses Ryan's trust, but as in he comes to blows with his superpowered son, strong enough to melt Stormfront, and essentially the main one who can challenge him both emotionally and physically.

I think the reason Butcher didn't die was because Homelander was shielding him while carrying him. So relative to Homelander, Butcher was at rest. While the air particles and other things which would've turned him to mush were blocked by Homelander. Similar to how fighter plane pilots are fine inside the plane at speeds at which humans would've become soup. Obviously the lift and stop would've still put immense amount of Gs on Butcher, which is why we see him waking up from being knocked out cold.

I think the acceleration would do a whole lot worse than causing unconsciousness. If a fighter pilot went from 0 to full speed, faster than an explosion, they would be dead even inside the cockpit. Your brain would be compressed on one side of your skull, for starters. It's like experience immense gravity for a split second.

@@skillzorz101the comment assumes Butcher was accelerated at a more moderate pace. While being shielded from the blast, Homelander wanted to show Butcher something. So he kept him alive quite carefully since there were no signs of damage on Butcher.

The thing about the line of Homelander not having anything to stand on tells you a bit about his flight ability. He has true flight ability, and not the ability to create his own leverage, like Omni-man can.

He just could stop the plane safely because if he has nothing to stand on he can’t slow it down if he’s holding on to it. Any other attempts using his physical strength would just further damage the plane

My personal thoughts are that homelader is a big kid in some ways. A demented, tortured, powerful, sociopathic child. Being a weapon in a cold room from the beginning and nothing resembling a childhood happened. He's chasing comfort and love but can't seem to get it anywhere and throws tantrums. He's losing his parental figures and the rules he used to live under. He can either decide to just continue and use his power to take all the things he's basically already being given for his participation. Or he could learn the importance of other people. I'm not saying he's unresponsible for any of it. But sometimes early situations can teach you things that stop you from learning the basics. He will either tear apart his world trying to find any scap of meaning. Or he'll be able to change and avoid being the villain that needs to be taken down. But either way he's the only one who's going to be able to end his loneliness.

This is definitely one of the most enjoyable shows on television now. Homelander is an S-tier villain. Perfectly acted by Antony Starr. Edit: A to S. He could stand shoulder to shoulder with Thanos and Vader.

@ashenzenden you have to be a very specific person to like homelander. Is is basically pure psychotic evil in the show with no redeeming factors. Every time he is on screen it's tense as you don't know what he is going to do.

The greatest power of Homelander isn't his ability to destroy everything and everyone, but his insane endurance. if he wasnt literally unkillable, the show would have ended in like 2 episodes

How do you even get that? He's got clearly very low limits. The weight of just three guys was holding him down but he freed himself barely and escaped. in the same fight punches that barely scratch a wall did hurt him. Sorry but Homelander should be toast by just using handheld anti armor weapons from WW2. He would die to kinetic anti armor weapons thats for sure.

I'm pretty sure that the plane at 4:32 is not an F-16 but rather an Harrier, which is recognisable at it's rounded air intakes on the sides, where F-16s have a single intake below the cockpit in a smiley shape.

Correction to 4:32: that’s an AV-8 Harrier. Empty weight is 14,000lbs. I would measure it by its empty weight because you typically don’t store a plane fueled up with all of its weapons mounted.

I haven't finished, but I think you should add a #4 to that list of Homelanders most iconic powers list Mr Film Theory man 3:23, cause time and time again does the show stop for a character to fearfully say,"Careful! Homelander could probably hear us." And indeed, one of Homelander's other most iconic things is that super hearing that not only lets him eavesdrop on any conversation in his immediate vicinity, no matter the size of the building or the barriers, and that it's also useless to hide if he comes looking for you because he'll hear your heartbeat. Not only that, Homelander talks about how he listens in on people's breathing and heartbeats to be able to tell when they're afraid of him or not during their interactions, or if they're lying.

Im also sure this theory means beating what Homelander actually is, not the person itself, everyone hates Homelander as in the concept itself but the person who is Homelander is basically going around killing everyone, so its a win-lose situation, it's like how real world internet personalities get exposed and basically being hated by everyone but just because they hate them doesn't mean the person behind the personality isn't gone off the face of the earth, they're still around doing things and could return as an even worse person than before

As other people have said, Homelander losing his brand would be a much WORSE situation for everyone. They deliberately make this a point in the show. If he has nothing to lose, all bets are off.

Finally a brief interlude into my area of expertise (combat vehicles). Although I don’t have the comic which could call the vehicle an F16 the fighter jet depicted in the shown comic appears to be a harrier jump jet however Its weight is similar if fully fueled to the listed weight.

I love the theory that homelander will run for president! Really think you are onto something there! However I do not think homelander will be defeated by destroying his image. As many people in the comment section pointed out this was already touched upon in the show when Starlight blackmails him with the plane video. So I think he will ultimately either be defeated by Newman exploding his head, her supe-virus from genV or in a good old fashioned fight with the boys. Another interesting thing you didn't mention is that homelander cant see through zink. That may be a weakness the boys could exploit to trick him somehow.

Pretty sure if Homelander did try to “go rogue” like in his threat to Starlight, Vought would easily bring him down. He was almost beaten by just three guys. And two of them were on Temp V which Vought created. Vought could easily outsource Temp V to an elite squad which they possess ample numbers of and the squad would rip Homelander apart.

Possibly, but Vought has always been holding the tiger by the tail when it comes to Homelander. Their tactics of keeping him in check (other than strapping a nuke to him) has always been psychology. Of course now with temp v things may be different. Also depends whether they use some of the tactics/plotlines used in the comics

Despite all its insane superhero trappings, I feel like this show at its core is actually about family. Homelander's brand/reputation was a weakness at first but he outgrew that as he started to take control of both Vought and his own life, but the catalyst of those changes were the realization that he has a family bloodline. He literally seized power upon finding out that he was lied to and not actually infertile/impotent. He hated being controlled/lied to and so his methods to achieving freedom from control was to control and lie. These methods could eventually alienate Ryan, who is currently his main anchor to his humanity by being a form of psychological redemption as HL desires to be a good dad, so I think that his real weakness, once/if the brand fully goes away, is his attachments to his humanity, specifically things like family and having a son or father or mother figure. Without any other father or mother figures to lean on I think his main weakness will end up being Ryan, and not just as in HL loses Ryan's trust, but as in he comes to blows with his superpowered son, who is powerful enough to melt Stormfront, and essentially the main one who can challenge him both emotionally and physically.

4:32 Matpat has the jets wrong here. Notice the two intakes and wing landing struts indicating that the jet is in instead a harrier jet not an f16 which has only one intake at the bottom. The American version of the harrier, the AV-8B has an empty weight close to 14000 lbs.

Minor problem with this theory: If Homelander no longer has his brand, what's to stop him for going on a random killing spree and taking over that way. The only thing that keeps him in check is his desire to be loved by everyone. If he doesn't have that, he becomes much more dangerous.

Thing about the comic is that the creator is on record saying he hates superhero comics. On the surface The Boys looks like a superhero deconstruction like Watchmen or Irredeemable, it's mostly the author raging against superheroes.
