LGBT characters make up a MICROSCOPIC number of on screen characters yet account for an average 10% of character deaths on screen. Supernatural, The 100, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, Emmerdale, Arrow, Star Trek, Victoria, The Vampire Diaries, Degrassi. That’s just a HANDFUL of tv shows that kill off the gay characters or their LI’s. Often for no good reason. Some kill off multiple (The Vampire Diaries kills 4 off ffs, Doctor Who has 10). And I didn’t even touch tv, cartoons, anime, books and video games. Just google “bury your gays” and you’ll see how big of an issue this actually is. Oftentimes the gays killed off are the only gay characters in the show. But more relevant to Eddie is a sub-category of this trope: in which a gay characters love interest will be killed off so Hollywood can avoid having to show the gays. It’s so they can cowardly dodge backlash from homophobes and claim they have a gay character still. The gay character will thus remain single, and then they can ignore having to actually show an LGBT relationship and just kill of the love interest and have the character stay single out of “heartbreak” or whatever and have some meaningless emotional suffering on the gay character. This trope is usually referred to as “Gayngst” or “Make the gay miserable”. Honestly they deserved better. All gay characters in media deserve better.
