just in case folks need to know: i realised that the problem with filming starship, and any space craft for that matter is that we don;t have any vehicles that move at 17,000 + miles per hour. the logistics to having a camera in the right place at the right time - in advance that is - in the indian ocean is negligible. it would be nice, and maybe a brain bigger than mine can figure a way, but like following starship as it launches is impossible cos it's moving too fast, we'll have to hope for onboard.

These have pile driver components that punch a polymer into the soil to rapidly dehydrate it. Presumably this will reduce soil settling later on when a heavy structure is built on top. 10:47 The augers lifted by a crane can remove soil and a casing can be driven. Then rebar columns lowered in and concrete poured. By installing many piers this way, the soils poor load capacity can be augmented.

Why do you call them flaps? Is it because of flaps on a planes wing? If so they can’t be flaps as flaps give a ing extra lift at slow speeds. They aren’t ailerons as they don’t give control in the longitudinal axis & they sent wings as they don’t give lift & aren’t aerofoils. Maybe fins? I know you lot just give names to things randomly but what are they actually called from an engineering perspective?

@rubikmonat6589

@donjones4719
@donjones4719 Місяць тому
Elon calls them flaps, it's the official term we're stuck with. It was unsettled for a while. Elon dislikes the term fins (except grid fins) and they are an unprecedented kind of control surface - yes, they don't work like ailerons, etc. I floated the term brakeron for a while but it didn't catch. It uses air resistance for differential braking but the term airbrake is already in use for something that functions differently. "-eron" is the ending for multiple kinds of control surfaces.
@heartysteer8752
@heartysteer8752 Місяць тому
Flap is a word that predates aviation. Just because it was inaccurately appropriated for use on aircraft doesn't mean it can't more accurately be used on rockets. The shape and movement of the control surfaces on Starship are more true to the original meaning of flap than that of those used on wings.

The FTS being installed is a really good sign of launch (and likely regulatory approval by the FAA) soon, as this is usually one of the very last steps before a launch, and would only be done if SpaceX is confident of a launch within the next 2 weeks max. I expect we would see the new FAA launch license by Wednesday.
@Spectator1959
@Spectator1959 Місяць тому
Installation of the FTS is officially defined as the start of “pre-flight ground operations” in their current launch license (Rev 1). Per the license SpaceX must have $48M in liability insurance for claims arising from pre-flight ground operations. “Flight” is defined as starting from ignition of first stage engines. The current license (Rev 1) only authorizes OFT-2 at the moment. Presumably Rev 2 will be along shortly to authorize OFT-3. Oh, and liability insurance of $500M is required for flight.
