In this project I will show you how to turn a motor from an obsolete hoverboard into something quite useful. We will be building a hand-cranked generator with it that can charge up a powerbank in emergency situations. Along the way I will show you how such a motor works, how we can modify it and how we can turn its AC output voltage into smooth 5V DC for our powerbank. Let's get started!

PS: Another likely source of generators are cordless drills. They not only have a nice, rugged DC motor, but also have a _gearbox_ attached, so that a slow turning of the input shaft will result in a higher speed of rotation in the motor (generator). And, the icing on the cake: The attached chuck makes it super easy to attach whatever input source you want! Small crank, large crank, foot pedals, windmill (cut a metal drum in half, offset the two half-cylinders, weld both to a length of pipe, set it outside (vertically), connect a pulley or chain at the bottom, and you'll have a low speed/high torque _omnidirectional_ windmill, ideal for driving one (or more) of the "power train" from a cordless drill!

Great video, power banks are hard to control, they test the power supply capability by drawing ramping current before settling to a specific charging power, same with mobile phones. The super capacitors will provide the high current demand during ramp up. That's when you see output power upwards of 4W. And eventually gets drained during which voltage drops and charger reduces it's current. That's why power draw drops below 0.5W. Now capacitors charges up once again. This cycle repeats. I came across this situation while I was building my solar charger. Great effort Scott. Please make more German content if possible. Thank you.

Very interesting project! About wanting to mount the slip ring to a fixed point, I think mounting it to the motor rotor might work. Drill 3 holes around the center one that was made for the wires, and then you can screw the slip ring on. Then u can also run the slip ring's wires into the motor instead of the motors wire out to the slip ring. Granted, that would require a much bigger hole for the center "hub" of the slip ring to fit into, or a 3d printed spacer to make it fit, but that would eliminate the dangling slip ring and extra twisting and untwisting of the wires.

My dear Scott amazing as always I have ome upgrade for the project in my humble opinion you can make a fixed postion for the shaft and a 3D print a crank for the outter rubber wheel installing it by drilling the whole on it this way you can make it all combact in single unit without interfering the wire much luv Aladdin

Nice video. Almost 2 years ago but still very relevant. Because it is already round shaped I was thinking about a spring loaded version. A spring that is called a "mainspring" made out of a spiral of steel. A mainspring is a spiral torsion spring of metal ribbon - commonly spring steel - used as a 'power' source in mechanical watches, mechanical music boxes and toys. This must be used with some kind of gearbox to generate the correct hand cranked RPM (or higher) under load. First you crank up the spring to maximum tension with the handle and when releasing it, it starts to drive the 'generator'. If it is possible, it would be nice it can drive for a few minutes. That makes it much easier and there is a more stable output. If you need more juice, simply repeat the operation steps. I don't understand this doesn't exist. It could be really helpful and make the operation easier and more user friendly.

Would be cool to see this added to a foot pedal to crank. This is a great idea!
