At the end of the day, videos like these are morale boosters for people who are being forced into military service. When I hear the term conscript, I think, a few steps above being a slave. Rough, but if you live in a small country that borders the largest country on Earth and have also been hostile to you in the past, then you don't really have much of a choice.

I have a lot of respect for the Finish People and their military. They are the modern day Sparta of of Europe. These people are fighting for their homes and families.

@@RicardoMartins67 actually we fought Winter War 1939-40 alone against the Soviets (apart from very few volunteers mainly from Sweden and Denmark; thx to the Swedish F19 fighter squadron in Lapland!) and a second war WITH the Germans 1941-44 (this is called the Continuation War in Finland) against the Soviets. We were forced by the USSR to fight the German forces out of the country due to separate peace with the Soviets. This resulted in Lapland War 1944-45 against Germany. Bottom line is that without the immense supply of fighter aircraft, tanks, munitions and other supplies from the Germans we might be speaking Finnish in Siberia...

@Iain Bailey I also think it does most people good. Not everyone is gonna become a soldier, but everyone learns or atleast sees some basic discipline, group work and how to get over hardships. It's a very maturing experience for those who choose it to be that. And I'm old fashioned in the sense that I see defending the homeland and your people as a basic duty of every healthy full grown male. You gotta atleast know the basics.

Tbh the only thing i don't like about conscript is that you have a big change that the moral will be very low with some people. Like most of them don't want to fight. Good example is Germany WW2 Allot of them didn't want to fight and that defiantly happend at the end of the war with Germany. But i like that you can have peace time that you can have mandatory service. So like with Finland and Isreal if war breaks out they will have army that is trained really well. So you have reserves that already discipline

@@RCShufty In my experience, Finnish conscripts tend to be exactly that nowadays. My squad was severely dysfunctional with almost everyone slacking off and being selfish dicks.

So lucky. I attended an event from the German Army/Airforce and they showed us basically all around helicopters. Sad thing being: there are so many idiots who live in the villages etc around bases and complain about the noise even going as far as filing complaints at the police. We can't even train our pilots or what? There is I think one range in Germany they are allowed to train with life ammunition. We really need conscription/civil services back like we had about 20 years ago. And look at what the German military has become. Really jeaouls at Finland still having it

Above the center of the country there is no real difference at all between night and day. The sun stays up 24/7 for a few months.

@@Aurinkohirvi a few units are sent as peace keeping troops but european countries are mainly prepared for an attack right at their doorstep. We are not surrounded by 2 oceans on either side and have peaceful neighbours we have to be prepared for anything.

The war in Afghanistan is fought by NATO, and the war was declared by the USA, it was the first time article 5 was invoked and a NATO country claimed it was attacked. It's an attacking war and other European NATO countries joined it. That UN sent later troops to protect Kabul, does not change it. There's also European special forces troops operating in Syria, but those work under secrecy, like they did in Libya. A bit earlier there was a major war in Iraq with many European countries. None of these peace keeping operations.

Just Skip Sweden supported Finland immensly during WW2. Not a whole lot of Soldiers, but Sweden is one of the biggest weapon transporters in the world, so the Fins had gear.

Also the terrain in Finland is ideal for defensive warfare. Lots of lakes, swamps and dense forests.

You can go underground and fight a guerrilla war that will eventually defeat the enemy. The Fins have all of those traits.

Jonski so many lakes yes. Wow i was told by our stewardess that we didnt need a license if we fished from the shore because i love fishing but maybe she wasnt sure because she doesnt fish. Anyways i immidately fell in love with Finland. The city was so clean!! There was no trash lying around, no run down buildings, no graffiti. We were in Helsinki and wow was it so cool. The day we were there (9 hour layover on our way back from Greece) we got to go by the docks close to train station and they had a little market/ arts and crafts fair and we had for our very first time moose pie and rain deer pies. Oh man it was so good!!! I would love to go back and my wife shares the same feeling too! What a great country and a great people everyone was so nice and very very cool

Ukraine essentially did at the start what Finland did but much less well equipped and without such a long tradition of training and readiness, with reforms in training and individual initiative only since 2014. For example, the Russians took Hostomel Airport much as the airport in the early stages of the video was taken (surprised attack of helicopter-dropped VDV rather than faking a mayday landing - but essentially the same concept). Because Finland could react fast as simulated, they blocked the runway with trucks. Ukraine did it by cratering the runway.

I missed the part they said it is Russia. When I served in the military, our mission was to defend Finland against anyone. Of course, since that day, our politicians have been giving away our independence like there was no tomorrow.

And then the second war started which lasted years...

Yeah according to the latest study almost 80% of Finnish men would be willing to take up arms to defend their country against overwhelming enemy. What I've read in most European countries the numbers are between 20-60% if I remember correctly.

I remember being very similar to Finland expect they have greater military budget.

Well, the problem is that if Russia ever really wanted to attack Finland, they would just send 3 nuclear bombs per city: Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Oulu and Rovaniemi, and that would be it :D They might not even notice the difference in their nuclear stockpile. It would be foolish for them to attack by traditional means.

bombing Helsinki would mean fallout to st.petersburg, Ruskies own city. bombing Turku and oulu would anger lots of swedes, since swedish capital stockholm is near Turku

True. Also because of the dense forests the combat would be mostly on very short range so we really wouldn't benefit from the improved accuracy and range that you get with smaller calibers. One other reason we still use the 7.62x39 AK pattern rifles is money. There might be more modern weapon systems available but I guess the Defense Forces have concluded that the benefit of more modern rifle wouldn't outweigh the cost and have decided to spend their very limited budget on more important stuff.

Money is the issue. Newest rifles are 25 years old.

Don't mistake the RK series for a mere AK pattern rifle. There's a reason American gun enthusiasts would love to get their hands on a Valmet. It's like a mix between an AK and AR pattern (The Israelis copied it for the Galil) with some AK mechanics and ergonomics, and some AR-like ergonomics such as better sights and on the modernized rifles, rails for optics and the like. The gas system is also original if I'm not mistaken. Reportedly better average performance than either platform, and the ammo used is extremely high grade stuff, not like that horrid surplus comblock ammo. From a bench I think they're around 1MOA at 100m which is unheard of for a service rifle, only really matched by the Swiss rifles. Most rifles are 3MOA or so. Of course, as reliable as any good AK or AR, although due to age, there are some faulty examples still in the armory, hence the modernization program. Frontline troops get the best rifles I imagine.

Arch RK and AR are both black... that's about it.

You can also put an AK magazine to it and it works, you know... from the dead enemy :D

Every military works different, he is an ex USA Marine which means that he know how USA military works. I think he is making reactions on these videos so he can learn about other countries military and also share USA Marine point of view and make some comparisons with us. Also i think that if any military would make such a video(recruiting, show of power etc.) they should make it so it will cover everything(means that you don’t need special researches before watch the video)

The case is quite the contrary with the conscript readiness units: the members of the units are volunteers. The Defence Forces also traditionally has a high approval rating within the population, 82% in the last poll in 2019. Part of this is very likely because of the conscription system.
