UK seem to consider a 45 minute drive a long commute and generally drive smaller cars. Not saying it changes the price just that even if your gas costs double ours, you still probably spend significantly less. My gas truck costs $170 to fill up at $3.50/gal, usually once a week. Just because driving 100-200 miles a day hauling material is normal. From what I hear about Europe that is not the case.

Some insight from a Leaf nerd: Make sure to enable 80% max charge, long life mode. To enable that, click the lower right button, click settings, then 80% charge. ALSO, your model does not have the upgraded battery chemistry that Nissan started to use in late 2013. We have a late 2013 Leaf and it has only lost 2 bars over the 10 years we’ve had it. There are places in Europe that replace or upgrade the battery, but in the US it hasn’t been easy to get that done. There’s a video by Fully Charged channel where he gets the battery replaced in the Netherlands. The only 2 issues our car had was a faulty driver side window (stopped rolling up), and clicking from the right front axle. I heard the AC is expensive to replace when it eventually dies, so look out for that too! We LOVE our 2013 LEAF and have a newer, 2019 Leaf Plus. We pay 0.03 cents for KW, so fuel cost is close to nothing.

Wizard!!! I have a 2015 leaf and love it. With the exception of the battery range it's amazing. Surprisingly roomy for the size, no engine noise, and the trunk is huge. The cost of charging is minimal compared to gas too. Although with the amount of torque it does burn through tires quicker than other cars. Two things: 1) That coolant isn’t for the motor; it’s for the inverter, which switches between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). Even hybrids such as the Toyota Prius have an inverter cooling system. 2) The car still has hydraulic brakes, but those sensors near the master cylinder are to help balance between regenerative braking and hydraulic braking. A hybrid would have similar equipment.

AC charging (right port) is maximum 6.5kW (maybe, some models have 3.5 or something). DC is max 50kW (a bit less tbh). While not needed for daily use, it can be very useful on occasion. If it’s possible to retrofit I’m sure a small(?) crowd would find it interesting. kW = power, kWh = Energy (power over time).
@TimHoppen
@TimHoppen 2 роки тому
For the existing batteries, I'm sure the AC port is adequate. But yeah, he'll really want DC charging if he expands the capacity.
@magnusbae
@magnusbae 2 роки тому
@@TimHoppen still takes two and a half hours - at best (assuming 60% residual capacity and that you can charge at full speed until full, which you probably can’t). DC would at least give you a significant amount in ten minutes, topping up will be tough though - probably won’t stay at peak speed for too long. At any point, I don’t think anyone would invest in DC charging on such a worn out battery without planning to swap the battery (or swapping the battery first). While I think swapping batteries is a great idea for keeping old EV’s going, the flip-side is that if you’re in an accident the insurance company is unlikely to make you whole again. A 2013 Leaf is worth $4-5000? That’s what they’ll want to pay out. So, if you spend $3-5000 on a swap, you’ll be likely to lose that money unless you have a good insurance.
@TimHoppen
@TimHoppen 2 роки тому
@@magnusbae yeah, there is that insurance risk. I suspect some company somewhere can account for that in a policy, but he (or other EV owners doing the same) would have to specifically look for a policy that accounts for that. I guess my "it's adequate" point was also assuming his description of his normal use, driving to work and back home. He doesn't have range to go anywhere else. At either location, he's got hours of time to charge on chargers that he owns. In his typical use, it's not a *huge* deal. Once he swaps batteries, he'll go more places and could actually take advantage of faster charging. ... I just thought of this, forgetting something at home would be a pain. You can't just turn around and go back to grab your phone or whatever because you only have so much range and it takes forever to charge back up. Still probably not worth upgrading to DC charging just for that (maybe? I don't know)

Car Wizard, at face value, you're undoubtedly correct. But Uncle Sam will be sure to eventually increase the price of electricity to negate the advantages of electric cars. There are many inherent problems with electric...the nonrecyclable giant batteries, the burning of more coal to power the recharging, which pollutes just as before, maybe more so. The short range, the recharging while going long distances, the lack of sufficient electricity in the grid currently, let alone when millions of electric cars are added to our overtaxed grid, and the skyrocketing cost of electricity. I'm not sure electric cars are the answer. But for now,some are using them. We'll find out eventually.

@typxxilps
@typxxilps 2 роки тому
@@saltyapostle44 Knowledge is king, stupidity gets boring. And you might have lost the evolution of decentralised power generation using windmills on and offshore and solar power. You will pay the bills, which we do no longer have to pay cause we invested once for 25 years We produce power from bio mass plants, hydro power from dams, wind turbines and a lot more - and as inventors we sell the green tech across the globe cause smart people buy that stuff and not fossils from the arab states to burn in cars. There is enough power and no issue to charge these cars cause what are you doing at home ? Turning on a sauna which will usually take 6 to 10 kW or a shower water heater running at 22 kW. So why shouldn't everyone charge his EV over night with 6 kW each hour, so 72 kWh over a night ? That will be enough for 300 km and who rides every day 300 km ? just a few, while the average guy in europe is riding less than 40 km by average, so even with a small european 230V socket running 10A or 2,3 kW you can charge over night in 12 hours 24 kWh or 150 km of range without any issues for the grid. The grid had been developed from the 50th during eras of full uneffcient production and high power demand which had been replaced by high efficient production lines and therefore these old lines have a lot of reserves from that era. Check your old OSRAM bulb that was a heat generator delivering 80W but only 10W of light where you nowadays use what ? 10W or just 1/8 of the power needed before. 40 km of range charged of night will be achieved in 4 hours with slowest charging speed of 2,3 kW which also lets the battery benefit. We have both kinds of cars, fast EV and very fast and long distance Mercedes Diesel . Charged from the roof the cost per km are low cause 4 cent per kWh means 1€ per 100 km cause we do not charge outside, only from the solar roof. And beyond battery range we use Diesel to avoid time loss or missing convenience. But you can dream on about infrastructure - like deep water horizon and the damages that were caused by that single incident, the cross american oil pipelines and their leaks and accidents. Nice to watch the US struggling to get the right things done first and relying on outdated tech as in the past even incapable to develope a vaccine.

The Wizard has articulated the reasons I bought an EV back in January: reliability, quietness, the future cost of gasoline, the simplicity of ownership. The car I bought doesn't have much of a service schedule (7500 miles, rotate tires....15,000 change cabin filter). The particular car I bought was being sold at *very* low prices even with the highest trim levels. I also believe the EVs will be in huge demand by the end of this year. Politics will dictate that through *very high* gas prices.

I've had a '13 Leaf for years. Use it like an overgrown golf cart for short commutes up to around 20 miles getting around/between towns. It has been the most reliable thing I've ever driven within the range limitations. Only real maintenance was to change a 12v battery necessary to power the electronics. This is old and probably useless information now, but if you can find a Leaf built after March 2013 it will have newer battery chemistry. Because of this and living in a moderate midwest climate, my battery still retains about 85% of it's original capacity at 62k miles. In Leaf terms this is 11 or 12 capacity bars - shown to the right of the charge bars. I'm interested to hear what you do for a battery upgrade. Crazy to talk about the economics this way, but the car has been SO CHEAP and RELIABLE to operate over the years, it would probably be well worth dumping a 6-8 thousand dollar traction battery into it when the range is no longer adequate for our needs. But you really have to be able to get past the UGLY shape of the car!
@advandermeer740

There are a few options when it comes to the battery. You could swap for an identical 24 kWh battery, swap the battery and add a "range extender" battery to improve the range, replace the battery with the 40 kWh version or a combination. Adding fast charging improves the usability of the car. A company called Muxsan from the Netherlands has been replacing batteries and adding extra batteries for some time now. Recently they are testing CCS fast charging with a new inlet and some software tweaks.

This is a first generation 24kWh battery Leaf, that started with a new range of 70-80 miles. They started offering the first generation car with a 30kWh battery in 2016 which added about 20 miles range, and a second generation from 2017 on equipped with a 40kWh or 60kWh battery options which took the range to around 150 or 220 miles. Often the battery degradation is limited to only a few cells in the pack, and swapping just a few cells will return a large proportion of the lost range. As Nissan didn’t liquid cool the battery, swapping a few cells is fairly easy to do.
