Friend of mine shared me the video because I have one! You guys are right, no one sees these things anymore and always flock to it when I bring it to cars and coffee. So many stories of people having one or knowing someone who did, it's sad there's not more of them on the road.

This is definitely a Conquest, The badging for the Starion is missing, plus a Starion would not have a plate in it saying " built for Chrysler ! I should know, I worked for Mitsubishi in Berlin. Love your work guys, keep it up.
@RogueViirus12
@RogueViirus12 2 місяці тому
Yeah definitely a Conquest due to the badging, but this has a ton of bits and bobs from both models, as well as from the entire model history of the car. Hood is from an '83 (they removed the vented hood afterwards, for whatever reason), rear hatch glass is from a Starion (turbo decal was only installed on them), steering wheel is from an 88/89, SHP wheels (1" wider all around vs a stock 87), rare factory molded mudflaps, those AUS/JDM starion taillights (US didn't have dedicated amber turn signals, the whole rear light doubles as the flasher ln US cars), vents behind the doors aren't the typical ones for an '87 (I think they're off a flatty?) as the stock ones protrude more, and those side marker turn signals on the front fender. It's a shame the stock radio and surround trim is gone, the OEM radio is killer with a full analog graphic equalizer. The surround trim probably shattered when removing it at some point in its life, all the plastic in these things are like glass. Either way, this car was definitely loved by the owner in it's lifetime with the sheer amount of customization and choice of upgrades under the hood. Glad to see it polished back up to be enjoyed!
@christophergahman6926
@christophergahman6926 2 місяці тому
You are incorrect. Conquest never had the "Turbo" inscription on the hatch. Only Starions. Unless the hatch was swapped its a Starion.

This is a mix and match of parts so no telling what it is without a vin. Although I don't know how you can visually tell shp wheels versus non shp wheels. Maybe from poke but also you could just have a half inch spacer.

Randy's been the man for parts and advice on the SQ boards for as long as I can remember. I remember when this car "came up" as it was being built, but not the specifics of it. Hard to tell the exact year of it (unless I missed it in the video). It's got 86-87 seats, an 88-89 steering wheel, and a one-year-only 83 hood. One thing's for sure though..."Dad" built it right back then, and will surely resurrect it properly. Can't wait to see it.

I believe that's it's a Conquest. The Mitsubishi Station GS-R would have the Mitsubishi 3 Diamond logo on the front hood, rear lift back and wheels. Love this Car and your channel. Keep up the good work guys!

Keep up what you’re doing. I don’t miss many videos unless it’s a car I don’t care much for.

Hey Guys, I thoroughly enjoy watching your channel. I have actually been watching for a couple of years. I was a detailer in my early 20's and then mid 30's. I sincerely enjoyed making a car look good. I worked fir used Car dealers and as a New Car detailer. The last time I worked in the industry was in the mid to late 90's. I suffer now from a bad back. I have had to get on a Disability Support Pension here in Australia. I have detailed a Starion back in the day. They were raced here in our touring car series of the day. They were very quick. We had Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Mitsubishi took over from Chrysler in the 80's. Mitsubishi then came back when Chrysler left. Ofcourse now Chrysler has returned also. I sincerely enjoy watching and even now learning new tricks. I used to hand cut and polished cars as buffs if used incorrectly would cut through the paint. A lot of Car yards wouldn't risk them. Thanks fir what you so. I have seen almost every episode. I will slowly go back and check to see if i have missed "likes" for you guys. If I have I will make sure I do. Take care. P.S. RJ, I sincerely hope you give up you bad habit. If it i smoking, My Mum and Dad both had Emphysema and Dad died becasue of it. I urge you to keep going on quitting. You seem to be a great young man. As do all of you.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I have been waiting for this video! The Starion was so 80’s futuristic… with its crazy “digital” dash and angular lines. The Starion and Conquest were the muscle cars trying to serve synth wave Tron fantasy… I wouldn’t be surprised if Hyundai is using this car as inspiration for some of their retro futuristic show car styling, and as a middle aged Gen Xer I think the Starion has held up.

I have never heard of this car. I did once own a 1991 Plymouth Laser RS. Which was a rebadged Mitsubishi Eclipse. It said under the hood that it was made for Plymouth by Mitsubishi. The Laser was a sweet car. I wish I could have kept it. The interior was beautiful. A grey velour. The center stack console curved toward the driver. It was like you were in a cockpit. Such a gorgeous car, ask me how i know 😅 only thing that really distinguishes Starion vs Conquest is the badging and the Tail Lights. 2nd letter on the VIN denotes brand: JJ - Conquest. This one also has a 1983 hood (only year with hood vents), rare molded mud flaps (last year a guy was selling a set for $1000!). Also has the 88-89 Special Handling Package wider wheels, you can tell by the rectangle around the brand logo on the wheels. i believe 88-89 also had rear shoulder belts? That front bumper is also either off an 88/89 or an aftermarket. Dad is our guru! Hahaha great video!

This was almost my 1st car at 16! I've always loved these things. My dad and I test drove an identical Conquest, on the test drive I got a taste of what turbo lag means on a back road corner.....it was NOT my 1st car after that. My dad was my insurance agent after all! Lol

I forgot about these cars. Very cool looking car. It would look especially good with the right wheels and stance. I really love that has a manual transmission and rear wheel drive.

This car is an 80's legend! Great job everyone! An earlier narrow body version of this car was also featured in the 1981 movie Cannonball Run II as the Japanese gadget laden technology race car.

I used to work at a dealership that had one of the Conquest taken on trade. It was bright red, black leather and a manual transmission. I freaking loved it. I wanted to buy it so bad, but I was only 17 at the time, and my mom was a firm no. My dad was all about it. But mom vetoed dad. lol.

As a long time owner of the Star/Quest it’s nice to see these cars finally getting the love and respect they deserve. I’ve had both a Starion ESi-R and Currently own a Conquest TSi All versions of the car rolled off the same assembly lines. There are a few differences in the U.S. versions. First, the U.S. versions of the Starion after 1985 where majority wide bodied with the most of flat body cars being made from 1983 to 1986. The Conquest was available from Mitsubishi for both Chrysler and Plymouth (that’s right, Plymouth, that’s not a typo) in lesser optioned packages than the Mitsubishi Starion. The Plymouth variants were also majority flat bodied and the most stripped down if I’m not mistaken. Starions had chrome diamonds with ruby red inlays on the hatch on the right rear corner just beneath the rear spoiler and the center of the header panel between the headlights in the front. Chrysler and Plymouth versions had decals in those locations with 1987 to 1989 using a full “Conquest” script across the hatch under the rear spoiler. Wide body Starions also got “Turbo” script door handles, rear hatch glass, and (in my opinion at least) a better looking steering wheel. All cars got the Belts in the U.S. Starions also had options for speed sensitive wipers the same as Chrysler, although I’m not sure about the Plymouth version. The Starion exclusively had a digital dash display option, and digital EQ option for the radio with a 3 stack layout: AM/FM on the top, Cassette in the middle, and digital graphic EQ with volume control on the bottom. In Japan, if I’m not mistaken, the majority of their cars were narrow bodied for tax reasons as well as limited to 2.0 liters in displacement for the above stated scenario. The Rest Of World (R.O.W.) versions also received different engines. Not all were turbocharged, while they are the most popular, and not all turbocharged versions sported the iconic front mounted intercooler (which I believe was a first for a production car back then to be located in the front spoiler as it was on the Star/Quest wide body cars.) The R.O.W. Starion was available with the Sirius engine platform utilizing the well known 2.0 liter 4G63-T engine, but using a single cam 8 valve configuration or the optional 12 valve configuration with 2 intake valves, and one large exhaust valve. All U.S. versions of either car received the much larger Astron engine platform utilizing a much larger 2.6 liter 4G54B-T engine with an 8 valve cylinder head. The fuel injection systems were also drastically different, and the turbochargers on the 2.6 were also smaller to promote faster turbo response and more torque lower in the power band as the U.S. cars as they weren’t expected to perform in high speed environments daily, meaning the national speed limit was a paltry 55mph in the U.S. while the R.O.W. Had much higher legal cruise speeds, or unregulated speeds all together depending on where you were. Our cars in the U.S. were aimed towards low end torque delivery and their cars were aimed at high rpm power delivery. 4G63-T powered cars were described as “peaky” with their operation being happier at higher engine revs. The Sirius engines also made about 20hp (around 208hp) which was more than the Astron engines used in the U.S. and around 205 pound-feet of torque. The Astron engines were rated at 188hp and about 235 pound-feet of torque which made them quick at low rpm engine speeds. I also believe the Sirius engines received MPi where the Astron engines received TBi, which is the Astron’s weakest link. Most of the issues the Star/Quests have a reputation for here state side regarding their reliability or drivability are directly linked to the fuel injection system being TBi in my opinion. Had the Astron been MPi like the Mitsubishi Magna, it would’ve not only made more power, than even the 4G63-T versions, but it also would’ve been far more reliable. Sorry for the novel. I’m a bit of an enthusiast when it comes to cars in particular the Starion/Conquest! Thanks for doing this awesome video Dad is awesome! And the Star/Quest Forums are a great resource for new owners and Star/Quest fans and O.G.’s alike!

Starions were pretty popular here in UK, along with the 200SX Nissan, Supra and 944 Turbo (of which I have one). They went with the power dressing shoulder pads in suits and big hair of the late 80's and early 90's. Great show, have learned so much about detailing even though I am already a car clean freak already 👍
