I kept expecting him to bring up the rumors circulating around that the colonel actually hated what KFC wound up becoming - this would support the idea that he would give good luck to the team for throwing his statue in the river, a way of separating him from the company that would go on to make food he considered to be sub-par. Actually, if he was able to inflict a curse on anyone, it seems like he'd be more likely to curse the restaurants themselves than an underdog baseball team. He'd be like a Ghost Chef Ramsay, the only way to appease his curse would be to cook the food right lol

I can confirm that as a Japanese citizen (for real), we don't give a crap about celebrating Christmas in it's intended way and is just used as a convenient ad opportunity, and yes, KFC is around most (relatively large) train stations, and also we do be loud of baseball Srysly

I think most of the world is slowing going into that direction. Christmas is no longer a Christian holiday, but more into shopping holiday, and a holiday to rest and enjoy with family and friends, unrelated to religion, and thats good too.

Also Canadian, we also do turkey for Christmas as well as Thanksgiving. Although I have seen some families do ham for Christmas. Thanksgiving is definitely a turkey holiday here, Christmas usually is.

Fun Fact: Turkey for Christmas IS very traditional, just not in America, it’s actually the most common main dish for Christmas here in England, despite most people admitting they don’t even like it, Ham is the second most popular and in my house, we opt for Beef Wellington Also, MatPat, if you ever visit China, don’t make your fast food visit Pizza Hut, I did when I went and it was easily the worst thing I’ve ever eaten, there were mostly onions topping it (despite me ordering pepperoni and ham), and most confounding, absolutely zero sauce, not even exaggerating, not a single drop, just base, cheese, and toppings

Honestly, I’d like to think that Sanders would love that he has statues up in front of his restaurants, and is dressed up. I imagine he would love that people see him as a Santa figure, that’s touched the hearts, and fed the mouths, of millions. I dunno, I imagine that as much as he is a hardass, he is a softie about the public, especially the children who love his costumes and statues. Idea: the annual Mini Colonel celebration. Have kids and sports fans make little Colonel statues, to show their glee about their favorite sports teams, and rebuke the superstition of curses, as well as making it a symbol of perseverance. I doubt Colonel Sanders, a man who fought tooth and nail to get where he was, would believe in curses or higher powers taking you down. Not saying make a Kentucky Fried Cult, but I imagine kids being able to make a little statue, put him in any costumes they want, to support their favorite sports teams? It might make a good morale boost.

Ironically, I've been to many Japanese Baseball games while I was in Tokyo and the team I watched and follow to this day are actually the Yomiuri Giants! Because they're based in Tokyo and the stadium was easy to get to, it made watching them easy.

Also visited a Japanese baseball game for the Tokyo Giants and that was such a fun game! Nearly every player had a special chant which the entire crowd knew the words and dance moves for. It was a blast! Would recommend 💯

When my husband studied in Japan, he said they treat Christmas kinda how we treat Valentine's day. It's a day for lovers where you go out together, and yeah KFC was the place to go and then get a cake from a baker to take home. Hey Matt, here's a fun little Canadian sports curse for you! The Toronto Maple Leafs won 4 Stanley Cups thanks in part to Bill Barilko, but the summer of 1951 he tragically passed in a plane crash. The Maple Leafs didn't win a single cup again until his body was found. Dang Matt, where I'm from just about everyone with a family has a "traditional " turkey or chicken Christmas dinner. It's super common. My family will mix it up occasionally but we almost always cook a bird with all the fixins. Anyway I was shocked to hear you've basically never done that, and even more shocked when you said most people eat perogies or some other basic food. I really assumed that people all over North America usually ate a roast poultry dinner for Christmas. You live you learn.

2:20 here in NC our charismas dinners included turkey, but in quesadilla form. I think I had a traditional turkey dinner once, but that was when visiting relatives in VA. Other than that the only other odd meal came from when I had visited relatives in Louisiana. There Christmas dinner included rabbit, alligator, shrimp, turducken, a lot of home made sweets, and turtle soup. Anyway... I know Japan is also big on French fries. Or at least they used to be. Some families would have a whole meal of just fries.
