Luke is here today to review the Czech Military Three-Piece Sleep System; this is an OLD SCHOOL piece of military surplus and that will be obvious the moment that you see the overall design of it. Old school but still very functional and highly versatile. Also, it's inexpensive!

This is Seriously Cool - Czech Military 3 Piece Sleep System
Agenda Free Link : eBay.com and military surplus sites
Price : This is going to vary greatly; you can find used military surplus for around $40, new is around $90. Those are common prices but you can find swings all over the net. I purchased mine 7 years ago for around $20.
Color : Olive Drab, blue linen and yellow blanket
Layers and Materials :
Nylon Bivy bag - this is a bivy style protection layer that is both wind and moisture resistant.
Linen Liner, this is known as the hygiene layer - it also makes the entire kit more comfortable as you don’t have to come directly into contact with the wool blanket which tends to feel scratchy against your skin.
Wool Blanket
Zipper on the left side
Weight : 7lbs
Measurements :
Nylon outer Bivy with side zipper, 80" x 28"
Linen Liner is 76" x 61"
Wool Liner is 76" x 61"
Features:
Czech military issue
Both liners button together
Temp Rating : Around 35F is my limit with this setup as is; the 3 piece kit, socks, pants, shirt and 40F is good for me. I run hot though so your mileage is going to vary. For colder natured folks, 45F is a reasonable rating.
With good thermal layers and/or insulated clothing, it could be used in much colder conditions.
Review Pros :
Great military surplus value.
Very cool piece of old school military surplus.
Excellent for warmer weather and early fall trips.
Very versatile kit - 40f is my rating for this kit as is but there is enough room to add additional layers; sleeping bag liner, sleeping bag or an additional blanket. A Woobie works great inside of this kit. It doesn’t take much and this is a 10F sleep system.
You can put a sleeping pad inside of the cover under the blanket and linen.
Bulky but for car camping and short distances, it makes sense.
Good compression straps.
Great for emergency use - throw one in the car for winter and you have a valuable piece of gear just in case of an emergency.
Deploys quickly
Good fit for the majority of users.
Easy to pack up
It saved us time and made inspection much easier, so we just unrolled them at night and slept in that.
Easy to store.
Decent amount of space for the shoulders and legs.
Works great on the ground with a sleeping pad or on a cot by itself. It’s thick enough to block a good amount of cold air from underneath.
Good weather resistance - wind and rain.
Not waterproof but can handle some moisture before wetting through.
Easy to take apart and wash what you need to.
Because of the overall design these make great sleeping bag rolls for not only adults but kids as well. It’s a super inexpensive way to gear up for a child or someone who doesn’t camp all that much. As a kid I would have been thrilled to have something like this!
One of these, a sleeping pad and they are set for most of the year.
Review Cons :
If purchasing used, be prepared to wash and possibly repair. Replacing buttons is common.
These are military surplus items and there is a possibility of the military surplus smell. It’s unique to surplus and luckily it does go away with enough use.
Mine was fairly strong when I got it in 7 years ago but it’s completely gone.
Fair amount of air can make its ways through the zipper
Taller and Larger individuals will have some problems here; Too tall and it won’t cover you properly, too wide and it won’t cover you properly.
My tallest buddy is 6’3” and 250lbs and he has no issues with his. I would say around 300lbs and this would be tight.
Heavy
Summary :
To sum up this review, this is a great product but like most things it may not be for everyone. If you don’t mind the size though it’s a versatile piece of kit that’s still fairly inexpensive to find…..but who knows how much longer that will be for.
I’m glad that I own it and I can easily recommend it; it gets my thumbs up for sure.

I was in force recon unit in Army of the Czech Republic more than 25 years ago... This horrible piece of crap taught me hard way to be proffesional in MacGyvering how to keep every bit of heat... Winters in CR are wet, mildly cold around -5 C (around 20 F) with extremes at - 15 to -20 C (up to -5 F). Being out of barracks in january for 14 days on survival tactics training (basicaly go to woods, be there 14 days, don't die and then come back) with this f..kng thing teached you to value every calory you can save....

Been using these for many years. Bought 4 of them back when they cost $12 each. Found that you can open two of them out and they zip into one double size 2 person bag ( almost a queen size). Great for over landing or truck camping the two of us.

Yeah I got a pair of these from Midway years ago and I think I paid literally like $13 for each. They're really comfortable, the feel of the "real" fabric is a lot more cozy than cold synthetics.

Will also add from my husband: had it for 2 years. Good for above freezing temps, layers stay put, layers easy to remove and wash, can be used as a blanket because it can be unzipped fully, very comfortable. (Also, he says I shouldn't harass southerners/non-Canadians about different terminology - hat, beanie, toque, toboggan, chook, stocking cap, skullcap, Bobble hat, watch cap...)

I bought a US military MMS sleep system about 5 years ago and it is my go to sleep system for 4 seasons. I do like to use a bag liner to protect it from dirt and don’t wear any dirty cloths when I slip into for the night. Good review.
@trustbuster23

I have a couple of these, had them for years now. My experience: for $20 they are cool, kind of like a primitive precursor to the US military sleep system. The main advantage is that the bottom is fully waterproof like a bivy bag (but the top isn't) and you can wash the components. The downsides are that (1) it is absolutely huge and heavy vs how warm it actually is, and (2) it isn't all that warm, period. There is just a single wool blanket inside of it after all. Personally, I think if you pay $80 for one, you are crazy. For that, you can get a decent, modern 40 degree synthetic bag which will weigh 1/3 of this and fit in a bag 1/3 as big and provide better thermal performance. This is something to throw in the back of the truck for emergencies or whatever, and it really stops making any sense at all once it isn't crazy cheap.

I got two in a set for 60 dollars finding them after seeing your first review of one. One missing light liner I gave to younger great nephew who loves it. I've used mine a few times love it. But wish it was wider am side slipper, and have not found anything that really fits me well in single sizes. That side works, and I do love it, and made it work the best I could for how I sleep. Got something else rated for a lot lower temp, but I keep this one handy just in case my go to bag. Power out just yesterday for over 6.5 hours, was like camping in the house. Had it ready to go if had to sleep without power.

I also endorse the Canadian artic bag. Three bags in one. No zippers that will freeze, only wooden toggles. It is so efficient, you sleep naked inside, your clothing trapped between the layers so that too doesn't freeze. THE best bag I have ever used at -20C.

I love mine. It's ridiculously comfortable. And I do take it backpacking; I use some straps to hook it to the underside of my ALICE pack. I was camping last winter in the high desert, and the temperatures got down to the upper 30's. With a surplus canvas pup tent (with an air gap at the bottom), this bed roll, a foam pad, and a single wool blanket, I was quite comfortable. But then, I run hot, so what was comfortable for me might be too cold for someone else.

G'day Luke, really like the design concept for car camping, particularly on a cot. As I travel hot too, any bag that folds out into a blanket has a head start IMO. How good would it be to be waterproof as well. Seriously considering one in the new year, many thanks for showing it mate. Cheers Duke.

It is a sleeping bag vz.67 (vz. is mark or model ) for basic service soldiers - compulsory military service. The number 67 indicates the year of introduction into use in the army. 1967. This sleeping bag was used for soldiers until 2004. Professional soldiers (officers, sergeants, warrant officers) had another sleeping bag of classic design with a green removable hygiene layer. The sleeping bag for professional soldiers had an air mattress as an accessory. Since 2005, the Czech Army has had professional soldiers, all of them have sleeping bags from Carinthia, one for light summer and one for winter, the winter variant has a temperature limit of -20 degrees Celsius.

I have two of these. Both are dated 2001. Mine has the green blanket with tan trim. Anyway on the inside of the bottom half of the shell there is a waterproof coating. On one of mine that coating has completely done the sticky thing that happens when PU breaks down. It doesn't stick to the inner blanket but it's definitely got that sticky/greasy feel. The other one is just starting to do it. At some point I am going to have to try and figure out a way to really get rid of that coating. Maybe next summer I lay it out in the sun and see if it will dry up and crack after a few days. That worked on a pack I had that did the same. Anyone have any good ideas other than scrub it out by hand with naptha or the like?

This would be good to have in the car for emergency use - the wool blanket would double as a fire blanket. Wool blankets aren't cheap, either.

Well from experience in 2 branches of service the sleeping bag is always one of the hardest to clean and dry for returning them into CIF. I liked the USMC sleep system way better than the older mummy bags used in the Army

To cut down on to have to clean the sleeping system, I alway either strip down or wear clean clothes to bed. It keeps everything much cleaner that way. The guys and gals in my USAR Unit would give me hell about sleeping almost buck naked but I slept great.

Could this be made with a gi bivy, army blanket, and bag liner. Nice piece of kit. Thanks for the review. Now that the wild fires are under control is time to get out for a new adventure.

I bought one and found out too late that it's too small for me. Took it on a campout and FROZE all night, because being 6'1" and over 250 lbs, I couldn't fit in the bag! I had a long sleepless night sitting in front of a fire. Today the bag is used as a comforter, unzipped, on top of a twin size bed.

Do you find any kind of cold from the zipper area? The inner layers are not quite cuccooned. I use CAF surplus mummy sleeping bag system, and everything is a cuccon. It has ties and loops between layer to keep them together.

Does anybody know what Jacket Luke is wearing in this video. I like the way it looks and I'm wondering if he's ever done a review of it?

This has always been my hang up when going camping, I'm 7 feet tall roughly 240 lbs.. not a lot of gear made for tall people , including sleep systems and hammocks.. anything I get like this I have to expand or modify to fit me.

Life must be difficult in some situations for you. Most people don't think about stuff like that I suppose.
