In 2014, CM Punk walked out of WWE in an extremely controversial move. After 10 months of silence, CM Punk gave an uncensored, burn-every-bridge interview sharing his frustrations and criticisms of WWE. I revisit and react to Punk's tell-all interview as someone who also wrestled for WWE.

The fact is that Punk doing the podcast put a MASSIVE spotlight on WWE doctors, creative, time off for talent and a bunch of other issues that were NOT being addressed by WWE management and Vince in the early 2010's. Punk exposed a lot of the flaws of WWE's way of doing business and a LOT of things got better as a result. Not everything by any means, but getting time off is a lot more accepted now than it was in 2014 when Punk left. Punk changed things.

Yup, say what you will about the guy but in 2011 he changed the culture of what WWE would present as top talent and really pushed more meta/legitimate storytelling in the company. When he left in 2014 and did this podcast, it basically cleansed WWE of a lot of their cheap and sleazy business practices. Like him or not he really did benefit WWE, even if he seemed like their arch nemesis at that time. Their breakup was a necessary evil and at the end of it all, it seems to have worked out the best for everyone.

I look back to the past few weeks when matches got called off early due to injury with DaVinci and Theory. They did the right thing calling those matches early and you'd have a hard time arguing Punk didn't indirectly lead to the early stoppages of those matches.
@alexschofield944
@alexschofield944 3 місяці тому
It often gets missed that many of the things he criticised about the company - the lack of time off, not allowing talent to heal from surgery, Vince being out of touch with wrestling fans today - have now changed. The company today isn’t the same company he walked away from a decade ago. Of course there’s also the fact that he’s not the same person he was either and I genuinely believe that, when he walked away, it was a case of talent and company having come to the end of the road and not being right for each other any longer. Now, both talent and company are in a different place and are perfect for each other.

25:10 “Never say never.” True. Very true. But in Punk’s case, an extraordinary amount of extraordinary events had to take place for Punk to walk back into WWE again. Nobody could predict AEW. Nobody could predict all the backstage shenanigans. Nobody could’ve predicted what happened at All In. And nobody could predict that after all of that, Punk still wanted to wrestle. Or that Vince would no longer be in the picture. Or that Triple H and Nick Khan would agree that bringing back Punk was best for business. A lot of stars had to align for something like this to happen.
@pikkdogs
@pikkdogs 3 місяці тому
The only shocking thing with punk is that it took 10 years to happen. When it happened I was sure that he would be back in 2 years. The thing that changed that was his ufc run and the pandemic. If the ufc run didn’t happen he would have been back in 2017 at least. And if the pandemic didn’t happen he would have been back in 2020.

I dont agree with this at all, I think everyone could have predicted what was gonna happen with Punk in AEW, cus its the same thing thats happened with Punk and literally every other org he's worked for. Maven's certainly got the voice for radio/announcing...and a face for primetime TV. All that makes me think of some dumb shit Nash was recently saying...that they can't make sense of Mav's accent. Going from saying you sound real southern, to just all over the place 🤦🏼‍♂️. Maven, as someone who's lived their life both in California and the Southeast, you absolutely don't have an unusual dialect. Very rarely do you even pronounce things in the southern way. Everytime I hear this Punk podcast, it becomes clearer that it wasn't "black and white" issue and it was more complex concerning wwe's "the show must go on" mentality and punk's aggressive tone he gives off. You just can't side with one of them fully when you hear these grievances punk had. It sounded like a workplace environment where you got shafted into a place regardless if the company knew what it was doing or not (look at nexus, roman's early pushes, dolph, new guys coming up). Hopefully, punk and hhh can work along well now seeing the fans really did miss him since he left. -anyways, another great vid btw maven.
@misterundead425
@misterundead425 3 місяці тому
It really isn't that complex; WWE had a toxic "show must go on" mentality, which is responsible for many wrestler deaths (a couple of them were Punk's friends). Punk, in the end, realized how stupid and not worth it was and left. Concidentally, afterwards, they finally started giving wrestlers proper time off. Probably had to do with the bad press Punk gave them.

The return of CM Punk to WWE after nine years is nothing short of remarkable. Considering the issues he had with the company in the past, it's astonishing to think that he not only made his comeback but is also thriving in his current role. The fact that he is now engaged in one of the most epic feuds of the modern era, potentially even one of the greatest rivalries of all time with Seth Rollins, is truly mind-blowing. This story is the living embodiment of the phrase "never say never". It's a testament to the unpredictable nature of the wrestling business and a reminder that anything can happen if the circumstances are right. It's an inspiring example of how determination and perseverance can pay off in the end, no matter how unlikely the odds may seem.

They were pushing for it and at the time he was willing to listen. Vince stopped it. And to be clear I'm not dissing AEW everything that happened is done. But if Vince McMahon was still there he would not be in WWE right now. Triple H and Nick Khan brought him back.

Punk said "it's okay to be bitter, but you eventually have to work through it and get over it." And maven only heard "it's okay to be bitter." Punk is saying it's okay to be bitter because that is natural human emotion. You were screwed over or hurt by somebody, you're going to be bitter about it. That's normal. But, you can't carry that bitterness around for ever. That's what punk said. Maven said "no, it's not okay", which is equal to saying "you can't feel love, happiness, or sadness." It's okay to feel, yall. Just don't carry the negative emotions with you forever.
@misterundead425
@misterundead425 3 місяці тому
Yeah, another thing Maven kind of took out of context was when Punk said, "Nobody could lace my boots that night." He only heard, "Nobody could lace my boots.". And yeah, that is still cocky, but Punk isn't the first or last wrestler to say that. Maven also took it as him demeaning the other wrestlers, and I don't see it that way, imo.
@ItApproaches
@ItApproaches 3 місяці тому
@@misterundead425 I took that as Punk was talking about how at that time, he was at the top of the mountain and his career, Taker was past his prime and not a full timer, Brock was also a part timer, and Cena no offense, is not on Punks level in the ring or on the mic lol. So Punk felt the WWE was disrespecting him by paying part timers who were past their prime more then the guy who was supposed to be the top of their company at that time...him...

I think it would have been hypocritical if he went back to Vince’s wwe, but he went back to hunters wwe which by all accounts from the news and wrelsters interviews it seems it’s a hell of a lot better place under him, and the product is far more enjoyable too. I bet you as soon as Vince got booted he had his mind set on going back especially since it was not long after he was backstage at that one episode of raw catching up with HHH and others
