Fossil fuel companies have been lying to us. They’ve known about climate change for decades, and have buried the science in an effort to continue business as usual.
In this episode, we dive into the decades of denial by @exxonmobil and other nefarious fossil fuel companies.
By investing millions into concealing the science and spreading misinformation, these companies worked to confuse the public and seed doubt.
This episode features Naomi Oreskes, Professor at Harvard University and author of ‘Merchants of Doubt’; Author of ‘The Uninhabitable Earth’, David Wallace-Wells and Writer and Podcast Host @maryheglar.
THE BREAKDOWN is a five-part film series on climate change: exploring how we got here, where we're headed, and what we can ALL do to make a difference.

What they've been lying about is the fact that oil is abiotic, a product of the earth's magma, and far more plentiful than they say. This allows them to keep prices high and keep that moving target of peak oil condition the public to accept them!

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. I feel like you can go even further back in time here. The first scientific paper suggesting that CO2 could raise the temperature was all the way back in the 1890s, and "climate change" as a term dates back to the 1950s.

CO2 at 0.04% is a 2,500th part of the atmosphere. That means to warm the climate by just 1"C carbon dioxide molecules must capture 2,500"C of heat energy. That is impossible. It also breaks the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. Methane at 0.00017% is a 600,000th of the atmosphere so it's even more impossible. However, the climate is changing. This is because of deliberate geoengineering programmes, in particular ozone thinning away from the poles. Though largely unreported ozone thinning effect is directly observable, this summer you can see a unnaturally bright sun just as we did last year. Under these conditions the pain felt when looking at the sun is not only from the increase in visible light but the much larger increase in infrared. (Look up at the sky and you will see a range of geoengineering operations in progress, these include chemtrail induced cloud or hazing, ripple patterns caused by HAARP installations, bizarre and unnatural cloud formations). Climate change is a programme to force change in accordance with the implementation of Agenda 21 /2030. Current events demonstrate this transition is well underway and will involve massive population cull through injected nanotech (re transhumanist programme). Agenda 21 also sees the permanent loss of all property rights with the introduction of universal basic income (ref NESARA/GESARA) and has/is being promoted by The World Economic Forum. 'You will own nothing and you will be happy' WEF In a depopulated world the surviving brainwashed and controlled population will be confined to mega cities. Carbon limits will be used to restrict consumption and liberty. Meanwhile the re-greened wilderness will be the exclusive playground of the ultra rich elite posing as conservationists. The CO2 hoax amounts to the theft of the world and the enslavement of humanity by a parasitic few. Welcome to the future! _________ I have included a debunking of 'accumulated heat' as it is so often used to explain how trace elements, so called 'greenhouse gasses', can warm the planet. Accumulated heat whilst sounding a reasonable explanation of how heat can build up is rather nothing more than gobbledygook. In fact it shows those using such arguments do not even understand what heat is. When we measure temperature we are measuring the heat energy a thing is losing. In short heat is a measurement of flow, the transfer of heat energy and this will always be in the direction towards the colder. For this reason a thing can never 'accumulate heat' in the way those advocating CO2 climate change describe. The temperature of a body is the measure of heat output, it can never be greater than the measure of heat input. Output = input. When a thing is warmed it is heated to an equivalent of the heat input. If this input is not maintained it will cool. Those that propose that heat can build up to be hotter than the total measure of heat input at a given time either do not understand what heat is or are being deliberately misleading. To illustrate, an object being heated by a flame can never become hotter than that flame, it's temperature cannot rise inexorably to the temperature of the sun for instance. Heat cannot be accumulated. When we think about it common sense tells us this must be the case. NASA and even Nobel Prize winning physicists have expounded 'accumulated heat' as the explanation how CO2 is able to warm the atmosphere. They claim that over hundreds of years CO2 has captured heat energy and this heat has 'accumulated' to produce a serious warming effect. As I have just explained, this is totally impossible and fundamentally violates all the laws of thermodynamics. That respected scientists should support such uneducated, unthinking nonsense is disturbing and only reflects that in terms of being able to think clearly about a subject they have no facility or inclination. These are the Dark Ages of science. Belief has outweighed logic or any critical thought. It tells us that we should not unquestioningly accept anything we are told, that experts can be fools. (NB: be aware of attempts to discard thermodynamics by talking about biology. Eg. 'It only takes a drop of arsenic to kill a person.' This would be somewhat desperate, muddled thinking. Clearly biological processes based on the reaction of a cell are not the same as the laws of physics/thermodynamics).

If you had children you're a large part of the problem. If you didn't, you're part of the solution. Next we have to learn how to control the output of the sun's energy. This is the cause of most of histories climate change. Yes,I apologize for inconvenient truths and a lot of scams that will come to an end because of a neurotic arrogant belief "we" will destroy the planet. @@martinsaunders7925 Hi Martin, that narrative you are touting is irresponsible and is a way many people have blamed the global south for climate change. Population control is not the only solution and is not the only problem. As an individual, couple or family, responsible consumption is your biggest weapon. Learn more about the products you're buying, reduce your water usage, reduce your heating usage, don't stream as much Netflix, take public transport, eat less meat. All more reasonable solutions than simply 'do not have children'. Bringing up the next generation to not be so fuelled by greed and to instil empathy is essential for the survival of the human race and animals alike.

Back in the 70s my dad and his friend used to live close to NYC. They used to try to build magnetically propelled cars instead of ones powered with fossil fuels. They ran out of money with their prototype and went to Ford offices to ask them about funding them and having Ford potentially manufacture the car. After they left the meeting, they decided to stop testing out their car. They were afraid they were going to be killed. Too many people in NYC were making money off of fossil fuels and their reputation meant that people knew they wouldn’t let anyone get in their way especially in NYC in the 70s-80s.

We weren't looking for oil, we were looking for "cap rock" over millions of years the oil had accumulated under the very hard cap rock on its way the the surface. The drilling is done though that rock. There were never fossils under that rock that's another lie.

There is no climate crisis. Globally the ACE index (accumulated cyclone energy) 1980-2021 shows no increasing trend. Global Hurricane Landfalls 1970-2021 (updated from Weinkle et al, 2012) shows no trend. Satellite data since 1980 shows a slight downward global trend for total hurricaine numbers with 2021 being a record low year. The IPCC reports in AR6, chapter 11, "The total global frequency of TC [tropical cyclone] formation will decrease or remain unchanged with increasing global warming (medium confidence)." Multidecadal variability in Atlantic hurricaines is most probably related to the AMO (Vecchi et al, 2021). NOAA data 1851-2021 shows no trend in number of hurricaine landfalls with the record high being 1886. What the data from NOAA SPC shows about tornados: EF1-EF5 (1954-2022) no trend; EF3-EF5 (most destructive) (1954-2022) 50% decline. No EF5s in US since 2013 (a record absence). The Global Land Precipitation Anomaly from AR5 will disappoint with deviations from the average increasing by 0.2% per decade, but if you look at the actual data, it's just very variable over the decades. Drought appears to be decreasing (Watts et al, 2018) measured by SPI 1901-2017. Deaths from natural disasters are about 0.6% of what they were a century ago. What else? Oh, deserts like the Sahara have shrunk considerably and the Earth has greened by 15% or more in a human lifetime (NASA). On extinction the rate is very low: 900 known lost species for 2.1 million known species in 500 years. At that frequency it will take nearly 190,000 years to reach 15% extinction i.e. a mass extinction. There is no climate crisis.

I think that this video has a big flaw: you tell us to stop pointing at each other and start pointing to the big companies. Why not both? While the system is completely broken, we would need a radical change in (1) our diet habits (2) our consumerism (3) our daily lives. Lets suppose that we take action against these huge companies. We would cut a big chunk of the greenhouse effect emissions. However, there's still a decent part caused by our diets and our daily lives. Would everyone be ok with riding by bike to work? With travelling less since planes emit LOTS of gases? With eating meat a couple times per month instead of a couple times per week? With buying JUST what they need and not because they want to? I highly doubt that (and it saddens me quite a lot)

Hi Javi, I hear what you're saying and I think it's a great point. This episode felt important to make as we hear a lot about the individual changes we all need to make, but little about the role of large coperations in getting us to this point and maintaining the status quo. Episode 5 explores how the ability to take individual action can be a privilege, (for example buying organic or paying for a train ticket over budget air travel) and how creating systemic change can ultimately make the invidual changes required accessible to a wider audience.

The fossil fuel companies have a way out of being emitters. They just choose to not promote it because, as was re-emphasized here, they don't think it's a profitable route. That solution I'm talking about is becoming raw material producers for carbon-fiber manufacturing.

I remember watching your old content years ago and it's been really amazing seeing you grow not only as a creator but also as an activist. I love that you found something you were passionate about and pursued it. I see so many content creators fall into a loop of making the same non-significant context and seeing someone like you, who I was inspired by, choose this path is amazing. Please keep creating videos like this. They have great production value and also make this subject so much more accessible to those who can't read well/at all! Thank you for this can't wait to watch the full series.

Climate change is cyclic, dependent upon the lack of volcanic events and not significantly anthropogenic. Given there have been very few large volcanic events over the last century, it's no wonder that the climate has warmed as volcanoes have a cooling effect. A thousand years ago the globe was just as warm as today and it was during a period of few volcanoes. Humans are probably having more effect on climate due to desertification and protection of ecosystems should be a priority over CO2 emissions... Given the recent Tongan volcanic eruption was the biggest in 30 years, it's a certainty that the global temperature will be cooler over the next few years

Great video with interesting points, but at this juncture - if the goal is to avoid the worst climate outcomes for humanity - perhaps misguided. What is required to avoid catastrophic outcomes would involve drastic wholesale changes to the way society operates. The pandemic induced worldwide fall in economic activity that reduced Emissions in 2020 - that would need to be replicated for well over the next decade (with year on year decreases) for us to come within the ballpark of 1.5C rise. Achieving that means changing the priorities of Government, and somehow, convincing voters to accept huge sacrifice so as to avoid Governments backtracking on this issue. I don't think blaming Fossil Fuel companies (justified though it may be) gets us there.

You all did it again!! Great work and thank you for continuing the much needed conversation (in a digestible and modern way) ! As someone who grew up on an island in the middle of the pacific, the relationship between humans and nature (although we believe nature is us and we are nature), is an important idea and way of life, that was pushed through out, and implemented into our primary and secondary education. So the conversation surrounding the conservation of our earth and all of its inhabitants, is not an unfamiliar concept to me. But what seemed like everything I watched, read and heard coming form the outside world (beyond our shoreline really), was as though the health of our oceans, our lands, our skies, and our living inhabitants, was unheard of, moreover non-existent. So for an “influencer”, and I use that word heavily (in every sense of the word), to use their platform to bring awareness- and not in the way of slapping a few facts and percentages in front of the untrained or inexperienced eye- is incredible. I know there are many channels on UKposts or other ‘social media’ venues that speak out against the destruction of our home and elongated genocide we commit against ourselves. And I know there are many that don’t make it so histrionic as that. But what you and your team do is so eloquently balance the role of truth-teller, without being a scaremonger (although it is fear for our future that often drives ones mind into change), and without sugar coating reality. It’s not just the production value, the editing, the writing, the story, the videography, the score even. It’s all of it, collectively triggering the truth, enlightening those who simply didn’t learn, inspiring those who knew not what to do, reinvigorating folks who lost their firebrand in the wake of our present day chaos and death, and waking up the rest of us. I’m not always so melodramatic about a UKposts video, but then again, it’s more than that! Thank you earthrise studio!

Ok but do you know the environmental footprint the tech industry has? The amount of emissions and water emitted from data centres or having this video posted and maintained on UKposts? Or the energy you used to produce and edit this video? It’s not just the oil and gas industry that’s the problem.

We, as individuals, also have some responsibility when it comes to climate change. You can't keep going weekly shopping in Primark and then put 100% of the blame for climate change for fossil fuel companies. (It's the same as- you can't keep uncontrollably eating bags and bags of crisps and then blame the food manufacturer for your obesity.) Obviously, fossil fuel companies have a huuuuge impact, but we also have a responsibility of making the right decisions. I hope what I said makes sense.

Jack, this is the second video and you still did not mention ONCE the capitalism system. Why? It doesn’t make sense to say all of this and search for a “new way of living” and “save the world” in a capitalism system. The main focus is exploitation and profit over the people and over the environment... and it will always be. Let’s talk the real talk, mate.

Realistically fossil fuel makes modern life possible. It supports a population closing in on 8 billion people. Without it we go back to the dark ages along with the plagues and the sickness and famine and the death and the 30 year life span. I think we can find win win solutions to address climate change. I think we could come up with ways to use less fossil fuels and limit their impact. What about replanting the Sahara? That area was green at one time. Do a better job of recycling. Create better more efficient mass transit systems. Use more local products. Accept longer shipping times if it is more efficient. We could all do some things that will help out individually. Walk more often? Shop less often? We could change our lives to live a little more simply and it could save us money and may improve our health too. We need win win solutions so that people want to do them. So that countries want to do them. Hopefully we can find ways to care for and take care of each other and our planet at the same time. A win for us, a win for nature/our planet too.

7:28 LOL that comment. In case anyone here doesn't understand why it's ridiculous I'll explain: What she's breathing is called "green carbon" and part of a natural carbon cycle. Fossil fuels are million years old carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, not part of a natural cycle anymore. Also, she as a person would be a hypocrite, but isn't that better than not standing up? I mean at least she is standing up and trying to make a big change, not worrying about the laughable small amount she is breathing out (which, again, has no greenhouse effect) .
