The Rivian R1T is billed as one honest-to-goodness truck, even with its all-electric design, quad-motor setup and large battery. With all that stuff making for one heavy rig, can its payload still allow Rivian's new pickup to actually work as a truck? Let's find out!

Up till now there has been some good coverage of the Rivian including Long Way up and another outlet doing the trans America but the coverage still has been very limited. TFL is up there now in having the best Rivian content for those like myself who are interested to see how the first EV pickup to market performs. This video is a great marriage of the newest pickup tech meets some good old school pickup work. Great content TFL!

I had the privilege to drive along with one of the Rivian test drivers a while back. The acceleration and cornering is amazing on its own considering the weight. But what struck me the most were the offroad capabilities. This guy drove up a 30 degrees incline over rocks and mud without any issues. And then on the way down, which was 45 degrees, he stopped in the middle. Put the car in reverse and drove backwards up the hill. I have never seen anything like it.

Yeah a work truck model would make total sense and I’d imagine if they can ramp up production volume they’ll do one but I’m sure it’s extremely difficult to come out of the gate as a new company with a high volume low price vehicle in year one of production.

This is the best Rivian video review I've seen, TFL is crushing it! Rivian, if you are reading this, all of those overhyped press events you did with other journalists were pointless, we just needed to see how it works in day to day use like this video. Personally i only see a few small flaws with this truck, the biggest being the low power in the outlets for an EV. Really there is no reason it's so much weaker than the ford f150 which gives you 2KW on a gas engine, then 7-10 KW on the hybrid/lightning.

I'm 70 plus years, been around trucks, heavy equipment , logging and construction since I was 10. I really like the rivian, good looks and great features. 300 miles per day range is plenty for a lot of working guys. If I were young it would be on my shopping list. I hope they succeed. Also a good, simple, real world review. Most of us don't dream of rock climbing in Moab.

You have a lot of wisdom than most tech savvy people I have seen. You are right about 300 plus mile range.
@othmanskn
@othmanskn 2 роки тому
@@venunarla A little honesty helps. With all the lies demanding 600 mile ranges in EVs even fooled me, until I verify the facts and check back my ICE experience. I always budget my ICE to have a range of 200 miles because I don't trust the specified full tank range. In a traffic jam, the fuel get burned rapidly. Checking specs of F150, the longest range is only 500 miles, at 20 miles per gallon, a very unrealistic real world range.
@venunarla
@venunarla 2 роки тому
@@othmanskn yeah lot of people overestimate what range actually they need. 300 miles is a comfortable range. Except for the occasional 2 or 3 long trips in a year , most find 50-150 mile range is most they use per day…and those 3 long trips….with current ev charging speeds at 200kw, the long trips don’t look that bad either, they just 1-2hr more time for 1000 miles . So it doesn’t make sense to crave for more batteries which add only add weight

The problem with putting the tire underneath is that when your stuck in a muddy 4*4 trail it can be nearly impossible to get the tire from underneath where a lot of SUV/trucks put it. (ask me how I know) you cant put it on the back since it has a real tail gate. So really the only good option is under the bed but yea you gotta unload all your stuff if something goes wrong. Still better than digging in the mud and jacking up your truck just to drop a spare from underneath. Solid video guys
@KarnageKamikaze
@KarnageKamikaze 2 роки тому
Right. This and the 2 other complaints made were pretty minor things in the grand scheme. If you get a flat and have to unload stuff, 98% of the time you’re only gonna have a few things in the back that won’t take long to unload. Obviously in this case it’s annoying if you had to unload all the wood, but still better to have decent clearance with the air suspension and a tire in a tucked away spot in my opinion

I know many engineers at Rivian came from McLaren and the R1T has a suspension similar to a McLaren 720S with air and a cross-linked hydraulic system. #2nd big ask would be for more in-depth of what makes up the "off-road" package? I don't think I've ever seen an R1T without the $2K off-road package, but many of us are questioning if we need it or not and what exactly (pieces-wise), are added to the underbody? Tommy do a cost of ownership analysis that may take a little sticker shock out of the equation. I spent $60-$100 a week in fuel when I was commuting. Over 6 years of ownership the gas and $75 oil changes might make a $70k sticker price more digestible compared to traditional less expensive alternatives. Great show!

That's why EVs are so expensive. They are charging you up front for the savings, but the savings don't really show for 7-10yrs. Most Americans don't keep a vehicle that long, and only tesla has cars on the road that old. Battery replacement is alot more expensive than engine replacement.

I really felt that the truck would perform well in these circumstances. I’m really reluctant towards an EV being the best work trucks, personally, but am willing to learn. I still don’t know about the towing claims. It’s one thing to be able to pull the weight, but efficiencies in time matter a LOT when used as a work truck. The downtime when charging is an expensive aspect. As far as this work today, it does represent what you would do Ranching, quite obviously. I ranched all my life until retirement at 55. The amount of work done today is about 1/4 or less of what a real work day would be, but that’s a fact of life when putting it all into video. I find trying to get good video of an adventure like this etc can be a tedious task that really eats up the time. IN THIS CASE what a great video!! The scenery on David’s ranch is quite idyllic. I had a beautiful ranch in the mountains & foothills. I see David’s land and am jealous!!! Haha. It’s amazing!! David helps a lot as well as he’s such a clown!! Hahaha. Nice video guys!! The Rivian is definitely capable of being a small but powerful work truck!! The box finish appears to scratch quite easily and should be addressed (you can’t exactly beat spray in bedliner), but the truck sat level with the load, dealt with some challenging traction situations very well and didn’t use up as much battery life as expected. You may have left a ICE truck idling a lot on a day like this to keep the interior warm. Over the last month or so the temperatures where I live have not gotten above -22 C or about 7 below F. Working like they did here means you are hot and cold all day, but need that warm interior to keep from frostbite on the hands etc. The EV will only use power when needed to keep the vehicle warm so is VERY efficient that way vs letting a truck idle and burn all that excess energy just to keep it warm inside. So as a work truck?? Definitely! As a ranch work truck?? For sure! The load capacity is an issue though. Payload is fine, the box is too small though. (We did try using Nissan Frontier Pro4X pickups on the ranch, but the smaller boxes was definitely an issue. You really need a full size truck (3/4 ton in this case) to make a trip for material worthwhile. I suspect you could at least double the load of wood you would haul in one of David’s 3/4 tons. Makes each trip more beneficial and productive. You have trails on the land, but don’t want to use them so much that they become rutted and start really damaging the fragile grasses in areas like this. I had the same concerns on my land. It took hundreds of thousands of years for the area to develop the balance for that flora and fauna to exist together and it takes us an instant to destroy that. There are prairie trails from the settler days that never recovered to the state they were in before we arrived. The less trips up and down the trail the better. That trail was packing and icing up really fast as well,,,,, a very serious off road danger. If you are hauling heavy, you want a 3/4 or 1 ton, but they are heavier and harder to use off-road. We hauled a lot of hay and bulky items like that so 1/2 tons had all the payload needed and we would load them to well above the roofline (if the terrain was flat enough) and front to back with bales hanging over the top rail of the box as well. This all in 8 foot long beds predominantly. Now THAT’S a lot of volume. You just can’t do that very well with the small box in the Rivian. The new Lightning and Chevy (Avalanch-like haha) truck boxes may perform a bit better being wider and slightly longer. If they want them to be real work trucks they need to produce trucks with the 6.5 foot long bed minimum really though. There are thousands of different loads you haul in a truck and for many loads the 5 foot bed really just doesn’t cut it. Even the 6.5 foot bed can be a PIA if you are hauling longer pieces. I know, because a lot of the ranch trucks we bought became extended cabs with the 6.5 foot bed. I still generally had a few regular cab trucks with the 8 foot beds in them and they were the first trucks to go out each day. First choice for my crew with the work we did, because of the bed size. I agree with the comment Tommy made,,,, the Rivian is more of a lifestyle truck. A weird and slightly narrow market that has developed for pickups, but is in the media a lot right now because it is new. There’s gonna be a lot of people out there that buy these trucks for their personal work truck/lifestyle truck finding that the truck is too much lifestyle and not enough work. The Maverick and Santa Fe fall into this class, the Ridgeline is the almost original version,,,,,. I own several trucks still and a Maverick is one of them currently l it’s a great day to day, parts, small load work truck for sure. If I was wanting to haul the material I used to have to haul around, I would need a trailer to tow that would do the hauling!! Hahaha. Literally!! It’s a convenient toy and I feel excellent pickup for city dwellers. It will haul new furniture, landscaping products, etc, so long as the load isn’t too large. If you want to haul the materials to build a deck,,,,, nope! Too short.

Just attach a trailer
@shitloveaduck
@shitloveaduck 2 роки тому
@@vigamortezadventures7972 - Kind of defeats the purpose of having a truck bed. Removes any ease of manoeuvring in the trees, off-road (there’s no way you could have turned around with a trailer where Tommy turned around in this video). The idea of having a truck bed is do you DON’T have to haul a trailer. Once you are pulling a trailer, you might as well have a SUV/CUV. It will do the same. Like I was saying in there, a truckbed has a purpose. If they are too small, they can’t effectively meet that purpose. You saying to tow a trailer prices the point a truck box can be too small to be purposeful. Like I also said, I have a Maverick. It’s a great daily driver and I often am hauling some auto oats or pieces I wouldn’t want in the interior of my other vehicles so at that level the truck is purposeful. I also have 2 Raptor SuperCabs, 2012 and 2019, a 1967 Chevy C10 2wd, a 1990 Chevy 454SS 2wd, a 1979 GMC shortbox stepside 4x4 built for pretty serious off-road use, and a 2021 F150 SuperCab 4x4 hauling a lightweight slide in truck camper. I collect vehicles as well. Used to own and work 8800 acres of ranch land/farm land with a feed lot as part of the operation as well. Owned as many as 25,000 head of cattle at my highest inventories. I used trucks extensively over my time. Pulling a trailer is very cumbersome, necessary in some instances, but cumbersome.
@cyber_sal
@cyber_sal 2 роки тому
@@shitloveaduck - I think Vigamortez’s point was that if the Rivian can handle 95% of the “truck stuff” you normally do and you occasionally need to use a trailer to handle the other 5% of your chores, then the Rivian will meet your needs. However, if a significant amount of your normal use cases would require towing a trailer, a larger truck may make more sense.

I forgot about that, when he mentioned the location of the spare tire being one of the things he didn't like, with a loaded bed. But with the on board air, maybe have a patch kit handy, and maybe you can patch the tire and pump it back up without having to get the spare. Which brings up another point, maybe in a later model, they might provide an access point to that air outside of the bed. Because even being able to patch the tire, you still might have to unload the bed a bit to access the air.
