“Heartless” Viking-Scot warriors leave the Hebrides for Ireland in the 13th century. The ax-wielding champions form an elite mercenary class called the “gallowglass” or “galloglass,” which will radically alter medieval Irish warfare. Chieftains and lords hire the brutal and fearsome warriors to wage war against each other and against the encroaching forces of England. Driving out medieval knights and earning a mention from Shakespeare (in MacBeth), the gallowglass are a special class of warrior that deserves to be noted in the historical record.
