There's a better explanation for the Yoshi's having many colors. It's not camouflage, it's anti-camouflage. Look at lemurs, for example. They live on the island of Madagascar, where their only natural predator is the fossa. Standing out and finding each other is more valuable for them than hiding, so they're quite vibrant. There are many different kinds because on a small island the winning strategy is to specialize on certain kinds of food, which is exactly what Yoshis do -- different colored Yoshis get more benefit from the fruits that correspond to their color in Yoshi's Story.

Considering the only real threat is piranha plants, which are stationary, (and the living lava but they would stay away from that because LAVA) this would make sense for Yoshi to adapt.

@@drewbydoo8945 Actually, they're not. Despite the similar name, the two are pretty distantly related to each other, although they are indeed both theropods. Dilophosaurus is in the family Coelophysidae, while Monolophosaurus is in the family Tetanurae.

I think the different colors can be attributed to natural selection since the green yoshi is in a more grassy green area, the blue yoshi comes from colder climates and the orange one comes from the desert, making them more easy to camouflage

It's more likely a Lakitu shell. It's completely smooth and the visible part is red. It's possible that the pattern is either drawn on by Lakitu to the shell so that swirl is a gang symbol for Bowser's army so Yoshi either wiped it off or Mario's Mama Mia wiped it off as he was riding.

Why are people speculating this? Miyamoto LITERALLY SAID the shell was a shell from the beginning. They added it so Nintendo would accept Yoshi as a character. They claimed he was a "turtle relative" hence the shell.

It’s spikes, not plates. And he said he wouldn’t count the shell since it used to be a saddle, besides even if he did quint it I don’t think that that one shell would change anything.

Yoshi has smooth skin, and thus is not scaly. Plus, in the specific descriptions given in the video, all of the other options had scales as well - this was simply referring to things like thicker hide and protruding plates that could ward off enemies.

one important point you overlooked was his shell. that isnt a saddle on his back and he is related to koopas, which are turtles. he's sort of a proto turtle which had these partial shells that slowly grew as their ribs modified.

Bro my science teacher just played this in my sience class. We had to take notes on yoshi’s adaptations, and characteristics lol. It just goes to show that matpat’s legacy is insane! And he would be very proud about what he had done for us. I’m still sad he’s leaving :(
