Nice overview. Well done! The info about quickly adapting to the larger screen was extremely helpful. These old eyes can stand a bit more screen acreage.

I am considering either the Wahoo Elemnt Roam or this Garmin Edge 1030 plus, after see numerous reviews on both in UKposts, you have made me make up my mind, I just place an order for Garmin Edge 1030 plus with the speed / cadence / heart rate sensors.

Upgraded from the 1030, and it’s a strong upgrade over the previous model. Purchased along with a RTL 515 and it’s a great combination for riding.

Big2Planker but what’s the actual difference ? Bigger size screen, more maps, I wouldn’t be able to use the touch screen with gloves on, and every cyclist usually wears gloves so I just opted for the 530. Everything is the same internally and on the device and you can still use an external battery pack for longer rides. Maybe the battery life is slightly longer ? But is it worth the extra £200 ?
@Big2Planker
@Big2Planker 3 роки тому
Bxckdoor Hey,so a few points: I’ve never had a problem navigating screens on the 1030 with gloves, as long as you get the ones with the fibers (or silicone) in the finger tips. Regarding the new device, clearly it’s an iterative step up, however the screen is perceptible better, response between screens is 2x as fast, maps are pre-loaded (not extra) and the power management seems to be better. Selling the old version to a friend for €300 makes it an easy upgrade, IMO.

There are special cycling gloves that you can use for touchscreens. Assos has them anyway. No matter what, if you can buy this device, such gloves should not be a problem either.

I've got a new CX bike coming and wasn't sure about getting an Edge for it as I have a Fenix watch which does well everything! I've tried the 530 and 830 just think I prefer the bigger nav screen of 1030 .undecided.

Excellent review that clearly explains the improvements over my 830. Ended up with a 1030 Plus spare (unwanted Christmas gift for girlfriend as she found a 2nd hand 830 at bargain price); was going to return the 1030 as coolant find a good and thorough review to convince me the 1030Plus was worth the extra £ for the extra/improved features, this review convinced me that it is worth it (illuminates the annoying 830 "do a U Turn" when off route on the road, a feature that hasn't trickled down to 530) so with the current significantly reduced price of 1030 plus I'm keeping it and putting the 830 on eBay. Sorry dear, you are stuck with the 2nd hand 830, I win 🤣

I use the 830 and my biggest gripe is when sweat drips onto the screen it can change the screen and when you try to wipe it dry or blow hard to remove the sweat it changes the screen. The screen smudges super easy which makes it hard to see data fields. I like the 830 much better than the Wahoo Elemnt but it's not perfect, in a perfect world.

Can anyone tell me, when you're using the auto screen turn off mode (on the 830), how do you stop it from reminding you to use this feature? It's annoying, as the pop up reminder doesn't time out. You have to cancel it manually, to see the screen underneath. If you don't use the feature, you never get a pop up reminding suggesting you use it. Thanks.

In comparison with my old garmin 520 I had just bad navigation futures, trying once and was off the track, but device was all... General thing why wahoo is- easy screen organization, specially future of zoom in and out the data fields. In have roam and a size is enough to show 11 fields which I can really read during ride, garmin 520 has smaller screen and for easy read I put only 3 fields of data on each page(I have no issues with vision:) ) more on garmin was too small. And quite often I listed thru my page(luck of device as well), and I start find my metric again. Screen itself on roam way better on the sun, actually I can’t remember the time when I can’t read the data, garmin has glossy screen which reflects sun. Both devices are good, but for my tasks wahoo

@avenpace
@avenpace 3 роки тому
bigger screen, almost double the weight of edge 830, extra "4hrs" battery, 16Gb more storage and...price, that's pretty much it, plus you get all maps excluding Asia. If you rely heavily on navigation, the 1030 or 1030plus is nice with bigger screen, you can see just touch more road ahead, but not a big deal with compact size of 830, and people don't really miss the bigger screen when navigation come to play

There is a setting in the device in which you can indicate the speed at which it pauses. If it is set too high, it can indeed be paused while cycling. The screen sensitivity change was enough to make me switch from a 1030 to a plus.. it was that bad, then theres the route re routing/pausing . “Make a u turn” every 5 seconds just becase im having to ride on the side walks and not the road for whatever reason was also Annoying enough to switch. Being able to pinch to zozobra is also a VERY welcome improvement.. the 1030 was an absolute nightmare of you wanted to look around What garmin is failing at miserable is allowing for exercise done on other non-garmin devices to be used for data for their training status/load. Unless you use only garmin devices for ALL your exercises ( even Zwift ), it doesn’t apply the data to their training status, rendering it completely useless. Why cant what i do on my Apple Watch or training peaks or Zwift workouts be computed into tenor raining loads to determine training status on garmin? Useless. This is why things lke whoop bands are taking so much of the market share.

I’m enjoying the bike so far ukposts.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

I never understood why people buy these kinds of devices. I have my mobile phone with me anyways in case of emergencies. So instead of a highly expensive second device I have a small power bank in the saddle bag and a short charging wire on the top tube to my phone on the handle bar. That way I can use satellite imagery on google maps or Komoot or hundreds of other apps on a Hi-Res display for two days straight. It’s even water proof. So why this? - I still enjoyed the review though, you have a very calm and good way of presentation. :-)
@bxckdoor9113
@bxckdoor9113 3 роки тому
Because the GPS is wayyy more accurate. I had to switch off and on my iPhone so it’s gps would work and point me in the right direction when using google maps. Also, your phone isn’t optimised to use GPS so it drains it significantly and carrying a power bank just adds more weight. Yes it’s a short term solution but in the long term it just makes sense to save up money and invest something specifically designed for cycling as it way more accurate, lasts 24 hours - 40 hours with a spare battery pack that’s light, provides wayyyy more accurate cycling metrics and data (I only used strava and told me on my routes I burned 1200 calories when in fact I’m burning 1800 minimum with the heart rate, speed and cadence sensors all attached) , I wear aftershockz aeropexs and it tells me within 800,500,200,150,70 meters turn by turn when to go, tells me when to drink water so I efficiently cycle not wasting my electrolytes and my water quantity so I enough for the end of the ride, training plans, allows me to set up training courses for sprinting and it also has crash incident detection and a bike alarm which is pretty cool. I’ve lost over 10kg in the past 4 months of cycling and glad I’ve got my Garmin 530 with the sensors with me as it really did help me lose weight. I’ve got 20 more kg to go and I’m pretty happy I’ve got something I can rely on always for long distances that I do every day.

Bxckdoor thank you for your answer! I think you make a good point with the GPS accuracy, though I never had problems with the accuracy of my iPhone while simply following a preplanned route. For very accurate cycling metrics and data also combined with sensors I think you could be right if you say the Garmin is way better. In terms of weight and power consumption however I would say it ends up being approximately the same. My power bank has 10,000 mA and weighs 160g. I can use Komoot for two days or two 8-9 hour rides with it. Congratulations on your tremendous success on losing weight! If a product like the Garmin has helped you achieve it I believe there is no better reason for buying it no matter what I say. :-)

Do these actually audibly say, "make a U-Turn"...? or does it just flash text on the screen..? It would be my dream come true (as a person with very poor vision up close) (yes.. I can see the road, stop signs, etc) Just not a computer on the handle bars.. If EDGE would put their Bluetooth technology to work and make it possible to pair a bluetooth speaker (so that the computer could audibly call out the turn-by-turn direction over the speaker) This would make is safer for ALL cyclist because they wouldn't have to take their eyes off the road/trail to know where to turn. And for those of us with visual impairment, it would make a Garmin Edge a possible (useful) tool. I don't need to know how many calories i'm burning, or how hard i'm pushing the pedals, or how fast i'm pedaling.. I don't need any of that stuff... Most casual cyclist just want to know how to get from point A to point B. We are not interested in all that fitness info that we will never look at.. We just want a cycling GPS with audible turn by turn, and/or a large screen. Garmin has been doing audible navigation for 30 years.. it is time they put less emphasis on the fitness info, and Enlarged the Garmin Edge Explore to a 3.5" large screen, and added audible navigation.. They do have coders at Garmin on their design team.. This would be a huge improvement..

After using a Wahoo Elemnt Roam and a Garmen 1030+ I can safely say --- How on EARTH can anyone use a Garmen and say it's good with a straight face? There simply is NO comparison, the software experience on Garmin combined with the random APPs makes it a homer-car of technology. It's terrible.

Wahoo has NO street names on their maps. Really! Wahoo has very little memory. Sucks! Garmin has “light Years” more memory. Also, the touch screen on the 1030 Plus works like a smart phone. Note: If you want to play with your Roam like a flip phone from twenty years ago, you can use your arrow keys to navigate. Also, don’t forget your phone while you are on your ride. You’ll need it to adjust your Roam settings. Hopefully you are not in the middle of a competition. Seriously, I had the Roam and I couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. The Garmin 1030 plus Edge is designed for 2020 technology, not a 1990’s Pac-Man display and basic navigation.
