UWB has arrived in smartphones! | Learn to Code Bundle: andauth.co/UltimateLearnToCod...
Apple included Ultra-Wideband (UWB) in the iPhone 11 series via its U1 chip, and now Samsung has brought it to Android in the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But what is UWB? How does it work? And what does it mean for consumers? Let's find out.

The killer app is UWB at layer one and ATM at layer 2 to set up an ad hoc dynamic mesh communication network. This will enable true (not kludgy like TCP/IP) connections between mesh nodes. Further, it eliminates the need for carriers (e.g. AT&T). IP can barely make 20 hops in 1/8 sec (required by voice) so it can't be used in a broad area mesh. A hop is a "step" from one node to another. Rather, most distance is covered on a "backbone" in a couple hops (e.g over microwave, cable, or fiber). ATM, on the other hand, can do tens of thousands of hops per second so a backbone isn't necessary to minimize hops. Prediction: UWB/ATM will (after political obstructions are mitigated) become the "only" communication mechanism. Others can't compete.This will allow power (and thus distance between nodes) to be increased dramatically without interference. Power will automatically scale up as nodes become more sparse (e.g. going across Wyoming) and reduce with concentration (e.g. in a entertainment venue of 1000s of nodes). Both UWB and ATM protocols have inherent security and efficiency as well as enormous scalability. Costs will drop dramatically. For example, cheap nodes (like clay pigeons) could be distributed along a rural road to lay down a path in a remote area in a matter of minutes. With the low power consumption, their batteries could last years. At the other extreme, all cell phones would be nodes so communications in a stadium automatically scales as the venue fills up. The networks would be self forming and annealing. In the beginning radio was by sparks...and was chaos. We now return to sparks (UWB is essentially precision timed sparks), mitigating the chaos in the time domain rather than the frequency domain. Both ATM and UWB have been hijacked by protected marketers (e.g. carriers and equipment manufacturers) for over 20 years now. Enough is enough.

It is very good for security Eg: if you try to send some high radio frequency key towards car a sometimes car unlocks n all, but in case uwb this can't happen. 6. Used for finding people in the crowd, finding lost ear phones, finding cars in the parking. 7. Still they are coming up with ideas that how they can use uwb in automated industries.

One thing I'm still not sure to understand is how an iPhone is able to localize an Airtag since there is only one Anchor (the iPhone) and one Tag (the Airtag) and not 3+ anchors like you mentioned in the 3 ways to localize with UWB. Is it working because the iPhone is only giving you the direction and not the precise location of the item in your house, and moving around scanning with your iPhone is like have multiple anchors because the position of the anchor moves over time and the Phone generates a map of your place on the fly using Gyro and camera?

Hi, I just cam across your video and saw the part of the NFL. That part is a little inaccurate. UWB is not used for camera tracking, it is used for stats calculation, thanks to the UWB tags in the shoulder pads we can see the information regarding speed, acceleration and position in the field with an error margin of 5cm. The ball also has an UWB tag. That one was trickier to attach.

Anything on privacy/security encryption analysis? I get it's very interesting for short range pinpoint applications as well as low power, which makes it very very interesting, but most of the problems I have with current wireless tech all gets down to lack of privacy and security. I understood that this has an advantage over keyfobs as proximity is necessary and all, but say someone finds a way to clone the entire thing instead of trying to activate it at a distance.
@clarenceloieprima6747
@clarenceloieprima6747 3 роки тому
this is probably why apple didn't discuss the UB chip in the keynote. they're big on privacy. so maybe in the future, they'll introduce some sort of encryption. at the moment, their intention is only to get it on as many devices as possible. and only later will they take advantage of it when the technology catches up. think of the possibilities--using augmented reality to find your keys or glasses? that would be cool.
@toddmarshall7573

UWB uses DSSS (Discrete Sequence Spread Spectrum). This is inherently cryptographic. You have to be listening for the spark at the precise moment in 500 MHz time...and get it right all the time. The secure (in the open) signaling to set up the connection can negotiate the protocol. A protocol could change the sequence at predetermined intervals to make eavesdropping even more difficult. It's how they controlled torpedoes during WWII using "player piano" techniques to switch bands. This technology, along with ATM at layer two, would render eavesdropping every bit as impossible as "one time pad" does. NSA can go pound sand.

The carriers and equipment manufacturers have squashed it for about 20 years now. It puts them out of business if a self forming and annealing mesh network protocol is adopted using UWB at layer one and ATM at layer 2. Google UWB and ATM and you'll see how they both were quietly squashed (i.e. their forums were bought up and disbanded).

@thebrightstar3634 3 роки тому
@@gr8vijay So both is still needed in smartphone ?
@gr8vijay
@gr8vijay 3 роки тому
@@thebrightstar3634 Sometimes we can reuse the antennas. If the frequency of operation is far apart for both, we can do filtering in digital and use the same antenna. Most phones do not have inbuilt FM radios. We have to plugin our headphones and the headphones act as antennas. Probably, phones with fm, which doesn't require headphones, use a different bigger antenna. The size of antenna required for proper reception of signals, depends on frequency of operation (higher the frequency of operation, smaller the antenna required). 2G/3G/4G operates mostly between 800MHz and 2.6GHz. Wifi works mostly on 2.4GHz and 5GHz (a new standard uses 6GHz). Wifi and 2G/3G/4G uses different antennas. In some cases, same antenna is used for multiple purpose, because of limited space or cost. There are techniques available, to use same antenna for multiple operations (example: transmission and reception using same antenna).

Basically there are 3 types of radio transmissions: short range, middle range, and long range. I suppose you can add super long range for interstellar transmission. Short range types include Bluetooth and UWB. Middle range types include WiFi. Long range types include radio for outdoors like music stations. I am not clear on the relationship of range and power. Is range proportional to power? You can have a powerful Bluetooth signal in the multi watts of intensity, but because it’s Bluetooth, it can only travel a short distance before it dissipates to be useful to carry any data?
@mgx9383
@mgx9383 3 роки тому
I'm not an expert, my knowledge is very basic and I might be wrong. I think you are oversimplifying. I wouldn't call WiFi mid range. And there's much more difference in possible radio types. There are two basic variables: power and frequency. Range (unimpeded) is proportional to square of power. That is, to double the range, you need to quadruple the power. To have 10x the range, you need 100x the power. Low frequency waves can pass through objects more easily. They get reflected of large objects like mountains or the sky. High frequency waves (e.g. WiFi) get reflected more easily on smaller objects like walls and instead of passing they get weakened (relatively to long waves). That's why you can have low quality WiFi connection just next next room in your own house. Bluetooth uses same freq as WiFi but it uses less power, because it's designed for a different purpose. As for radio stations, notice that old AM radio had much larger range, even today you can catch radio stations from abroad, from hundreds if not thousands of kilometers away. Of course these need powerful transmitters. While modern FM radio uses much shorter wavelengths, and you can loose range just outside of town. Modern stations don't use such powerful transmitters any more, because it's not economical to do so. It's better to cover the same area with many small transmitters, than with a single large one. This way quality is improved too. If long range is needed, point-to-point satellite links can be used. And with higher frequency more data can be transmitted.
