Luvvie Ajayi Jones isn't afraid to speak her mind or to be the one dissenting voice in a crowd, and neither should you. "Your silence serves no one," says the writer, activist and self-proclaimed professional troublemaker. In this bright, uplifting talk, Ajayi Jones shares three questions to ask yourself if you're teetering on the edge of speaking up or quieting down -- and encourages all of us to get a little more comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Yes but I think we need to put a little less pressure on how people say things, because even if you say something perfectly with love it still can be misinterpreted and taken negatively. It's just as important for people to work on how they receive things and not just place the burden on the other person.

wow, this talk is one of the greatest one that I clicked on UKposts. Her message seems obvious but somehow it hits me deeply because in the past I was kind of speaking the truth even it hurt me terribly. The checkpoint that she mentioned is also very important before we speak out loud 1. Did you really mean it? 2. Can you defend it? 3. Did you say it with love? This can help us to say truthfully without offending others.

This is a great talk, and I encourage everyone to 'be the domino' as she puts it. I would however also encourage everyone reading this to investigate yourselves. It is very easy for those in a privileged position to not investigate our own beliefs and values, what we advocate, believing we already know it all. I know this from my own experience. I held racist beliefs, yet I didn't see them as racist. I held sexist beliefs, and I did not see these as sexist either. It is difficult to confront your own bigotry, it isn't something immediately clear because it is covered by a veil of "That's just how it is". What ripped me out of this mindset was listening to others. Women, black people, trans people speaking up about the various harmful power dynamics they face.
@Kaminegg
@Kaminegg 6 років тому
Hakasedess All of our beliefs are difficult to purge. They make us do all kinds of things we don't want, skipping work or cheating on diets. Racist or sexist non-sequitirs need not be placed in a special category. Instead, the more that we see ourselves as believing any unnecessary nonsense and purging those beliefs, the more we can purge them all.
@Hakasedess
@Hakasedess 6 років тому
Indeed. Bigoted views are in a particular spot because the overwhelming majority of us do not want to admit we hold them to begin with. Most racist views are not regarded as such by the people holding them. It's important to be open to the idea that one could be racist, but unaware.
@Kaminegg
@Kaminegg 6 років тому
Hakasedess It is useful, even necessary, but need not be the first domino! Just knowing that what we know is probably wrong... As Lao Tsu said, "Darkness within darkness, the gateway to all wisdom." Socrates also said to assume that you know less than you believe you do.
@goddessintriptych7046

I disagree. I've always been right about everything, so why should I bother seeking out others' opinions? Seems like a waste of time if you ask me.
@Nimuel
@Nimuel 5 років тому
Spoken like a bigot, I'm sorry to say. Someone being honest and true with themselves would, had they truly been enlightened, come from a place of understanding, not condemnation. A truthseeker seeks understanding first, the brave will speak with this understanding to test it. Truth sets you free, not conformity.

I so appreciate this vid and Luvvie Ajayi Jones. I've often found myself being the one person speaking out. It can be exhausting and very unnerving being the first domino. Speaking of which, wow does the description beneath this vid get it wrong! It says that Jones " isn't afraid to speak her mind or to be the one dissenting voice in a crowd, and neither should you." In her Ted Talk she literally says precisely the opposite--that she is often afraid, but does it anyway. She never says "you shouldn't be afraid to speak out." She says it's hard and scary but try to do it anyway (which is the definition of courage, BTW--Jones is courageous, and inspires this particular middle-aged white guy! 🙂).

I love her, I have so much fear I take medication and it’s been a mental health issue for my whole life, to choose to feel that blows my mind.

I am inspired. This is me, I was tired of the consequences of being the voice that no one else wants to be. Thank you for the reminder to continue my purpose.

In an often "don't stand out" world and having a drive for justice and truth, I will listen to this consistently for the strength of solidarity. Thank you for your courage to speak. You've helped many more on their paths to do the same, I'm sure of this, because you've done it for me!

I love this as a Capricorn too, I feel our love for being on the solid ground literally and metaphorically helps us be uncomfortable for the greater good.

I feel like she took the words right out of my mouth. It's awesome how when you feel something and meditate on it people and circumstances fall right in place like a path. She is inspirational and I am motivated to continue to be me because of beautiful souls like her.

POWERFUL, and thank you for this. I am at a point in my life where I am moving from silence to wanting to speak up more about my experiences and my noticings. I am doing this mainly with my family. I want better days for them and so I hope my "wisdom" will shine a better path for them. I cannot be silent.

I pray for my daughters to love themselves and be so comfortable to speak up about what they are passionate about, and making a difference. This is a message I will not hesitate to share with my girls. You could not have said it any better. This video was inspiring, encouraging, challenging, and helpful. Thank you for not keeping quite, shutting out fear and choosing to make a difference. Blessings to you. - Jovanna Heaston

I saw myself in some of her speech: what others are thinking in their heads, I'm saying it out loud. I used to be afraid of that but now, I feel great about being my authentic self. Thank you for the strength!

This is beautiful, powerful, and inspiring. "People count on our silence to keep us where we are." I feel like this can be said for many of the companies I have worked for and work at now. Unless you stand up and push for the respect you will be walked all over. Thank you for this TED Talk and I will be purchasing your book in the very near future!

Enough said, her charisma had me with no words before I played the video. I can't believe I actually had good multiple laughs while watching a TED Talk video. I will try my best to keep coming back to this 'lecture' (if you will) to lighten up my mood as it's lightened up now to avoid too much anxiety, fears and preoccupations in my last year at school. Thank you very much!

I love this. Fear will keep us from stepping into our destiny. I have learned along the way, the things worth having are usually on the other side of fear/self-doubt.
