An easy to build Extendable and Reprogrammable Giant 7 Segment Display. Examples for Arduino Nano/Uno and Wemos D1 Mini (ESP8266) included. 👇 More info below 👇
This video is sponsored by PCBway.
Projects PCB from PCBWay: geni.us/Giant7SegPCB
Build a large and very bright seven segment display to show numbers, words, or animations for your own project. Example code and wiring diagrams are included for both the Arduino Nano and Wemos D1 Mini (ESP8266). Personalise it to your needs by including more hardware, such as thermometers, motion detection, buttons etc or use a Wemos D1 Mini to connect it to WiFi and show dynamic readings from the Web or your local network.
List of items used in this project and where to find them:
■ WS2812B LEDS 60/m (1 Meter required per digit): geni.us/5mWS2812B60m
A microcontroller, either
■ Elegoo Arduino Nano (x1): geni.us/ArduinoNanoV3
or
■ Wemos D1 Mini and LLC for Wifi and IoT Control (x1): geni.us/wemosD1
Logic Level Shifter (74AHCT125): geni.us/74AHCT125-LLS
■ Power supply 5v (x1): geni.us/5vPowerSupply3A (Budget at least 1.5amps per digit, 3.6 amps if your going to turn them all on bright white simultaneously).
■ Barrel Connector (x1): geni.us/HighAmpDCBarrel
■ Plenty of M3x6 bolts: geni.us/NutsAndBolts
■ 5mm Solid Acrylic: geni.us/SolidAcrylicSheets5mm
■ 3mm Semi-translucent/Frosted Acrylic: geni.us/OpalFrostedA4Acrylic
■ 3D Printer Filament: www.3djake.uk
To connect the electronics either:
■ Projects PCB from PCBWay: geni.us/Giant7SegPCB
■ Wago style connectors or similar: geni.us/Wago221
Optional radio control add-on:
■ Radio Receiver: geni.us/315mhzReceiverMoment
■ Radio transmitter fob: geni.us/315mhzTransmitter-4b
Some wood for the frame. I used four pieces of pine 20x68x436mm (x2) and 20x68x381mm (x2)
To work out the wood lengths for different thickness of wood please take a look at the cheat sheet I made for you here: www.diymachines.co.uk/giant-m...
■ Glue (I used Wood glue and Gorilla Glue): geni.us/Gorilla-Glue
These are some of my favourite tools I use and can recommend:
■ Battery-powered glue gun: geni.us/BoschBatteryGlueGun
■ Bosch Bit Driver: geni.us/Bosch-Screwdriver
I use a Prusa MK3S for my projects and highly recommend both it and the Prusa Mini. If I inspired you to take up 3D printing please consider purchasing a printer via this link: shop.prusa3d.com/#a_aid=diymac...
Prusa support my channel when you use that link at no cost to yourself. :)

I agree. There are many channels for DIY enthusiasts but there are few that are on par with the same level of quality. Not only the filming and editing is great, also the way you explain things is fantastic. Very calm, well balanced and perfectly supported by the video. (BTW. just remembered that I have two more google accounts. So subscribed using those accounts as well. So, 100k is a little bit closer now. Just don't tell Google ;-) )

When cutting out the digits in the acrylic, you could also use a coping saw. It has a thinner blade and might make the corner turns a little easier.

Hello, enjoyed your video so much, we have built a five digit version using 80/20- 10 series aluminum extrusions, instead of wood. We have augmented your code so we can manually count for a children’s hospital toy drive. Appreciate your content and web site. Our only issue is with the Wi-Fi fobs you listed. They are not reliable more than just a few feet away. We may change to wired. Thanks again for everything!

That's a great idea! Using the Wemos D1 you certainly could. Perhaps green text when the count is rising and red when it has fallen.

Can you do a normal counter with this project? Like when I press a remote button up, the numbers go up accordingly as I pressed through a wireless controller?
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines Рік тому
Yes you certainly can using the circuit as it's designed and the wireless key fob. You would need to revise the code though.

OMG, this is exactly what I have been looking for. Like you I have been looking to create a set of lap counters for the swimming club that I am a part of for the long distance events. Most of our local competitions are in a six lane 25m pool, so I need to build six of them with the ability to count down from 60 (or 32 for 800m) in twos. I was looking at using ESP32s to control each one, with a rechargeable battery pack in each to make them stand alone. I would like to see if I can then build an App to control each of the units to set the race length, count down each pair of laps and reset at the end of the heat. I am a noob to all of this, but I used to dabble in electronics and programming when I was much younger, do you think my idea above is possible? I would be really interested in finding out how yours worked out and if you built multiple units, or made other improvements. Thanks for your amazing content.

There's "wled clock" fw for esp32 that has clock, stopwatch and countdown timer, flash your esp from online flash tool and control it from a mobile phone

Maybe I missed it, but what are the dimensions of the 5mm Acrylic sheet for each digit?
@TheUnofficialMaker
@TheUnofficialMaker Рік тому
Nice but too much work. I'd like to see a design made on laser cutter. Maybe use black card or black acrylic to cut out the segments, paint front white, put glass or thin acrylic over the front, would this work? Love to see a project like that. Also saw a project using addressable leds for each digit so it can be one strand for each digit. Keep up the great work.

I don't know if you've corrected this yet or not, but the PCB you created at PCBway is not complete. The ESP and Logic Level Converter are not completely wired - and do not connect. It is shown this way in the video, as well as on PCBWay. The connections to the Logic Level chip is not connected.

What about DMX512 with addressable pixels rather than a arduino
@DIYMachines

You could absolutely control it with DMX if you swapped the WS2812B and Arduino for a suitable pixel driver and LED wiring.

Just fyi, with an arduino / 3v3 Logic, there is no need for a logig Level shifter... The LEDs are fine with 3v3 Logic and will upvolt it themself After the first LED to 5v..
@DIYMachines
@DIYMachines Рік тому
You are absolutely correct as long as the length of wire between the Arduino and first LED is relatively short. In my personal experiment this has never been a problem - though I wanted to show best practice in the video to help ensure as many people as possible were successful.

The 7-segment display must be tilted 10 degrees to the right of the y-axis. That is the standard. Why, otherwise such a great job, ruin with those flat segments.

If you opted to use the ESP board instead of the Arduino Nano then you certainly can do this. Of course you'll need at least four character on your display and could add an additional ':' halfway between them if you wanted to.

You got anything without a 3D printer as I gave up on mine 10 years ago, it never printed anything correctly despite taking hours to build and tram and set up, it printed one item very badly and nothing I did improved it, even upgraded the Z axis to Acme threads to improve on accuracy of layer height. Still no good. I'd like to make this project for a game site that my son goes to and it needs a large timer, have thought of a better way of making this, well two ways making it, I got no way of modeling it as I gave up on CAD given the issues with trying to use them, errors errors and correcting errors, no one makes a CAD system that you can just make what you want in minutes, it take hours of applying construction elements and those that allow parametric drawing with ease are not good at producing parts. Tried it with the 3D printer for one print and it printed the item paper thin walls despite infill ...
