I was fresh out of college in 1988 and on my way into a pool hall one evening when I was approached by a dude in the parking lot who started asking me questions about my life, my ambitions and my goals. He went on to tell me about this book that had changed his life and wanted to share it with me. He said that it only costs what I was able to pay for it. As I started walking away, he told me he would give it to me for free if I would seriously consider reading it. I took the book and threw it in my car. The next day, at work, it was break time. I grabbed my lunch box and the book from my car and met my fellow workers at the fire barrel where we congregated during breaks. I sat down and started reading "Dianetics" by L. Ron Hubbard. The first few paragraphs and pages had me interested - had me thinking how great it would be to have all the qualities that were promised if you follow this course. Then, suddenly. Boom! Someone snatched the book out of my hands and threw it into the fire barrel. It was my coworker, Pete. He said, "You'll thank me for that later!" Thanks Pete!

Funny true story about Scientology. Joe is pretty much spot on about their reps doing random talent searches all around the LA area and bringing them to show off their skills whether its acting, singing, dancing and entertainment supposed stuff people wished they'd be famous and have a stardom career. I was in Burbank for some reason I can't remember other than getting interviewed for a job idk. But two ordinary looking adults came up me to me and asked if I was interested in auditioning. They invited us to their "Celebrity Center" and it was a pretty normal looking amphitheater. And one by one we each auditioned. I thought I was a good singer but I read the room and I know I sucked ass! Still got a round of applause for it which was unusual. Sat us back down to watch the other auditioners and one by one I noticed each person was being led to somewhere else for a special interview. Nothing is barely mentioned about how great your performance was and went straight to asking really personal questions with each question getting more uncomfortable. They basically get to shrinking you at this point and you can't help feeling that as a young person without having done much in life and belonging to nowhere their cause seems interesting to you. Then they offered you go take stupid classes like "How To Get Motivated" because they concluded in their analysis that I have problems being motivated which was kinda true at the time but not really. It was the most broad amd generic thing they can diagnose someone but half way through that class answering dumb questions out of a workbook I left after thinking "I don't need a class to learn to be motivated!", and they tried persuading me to stay, but I'm a pretty impatient person with things like these so I bounced. Upon walking across the street to get to my car, I looked back to see the building and saw "Church of Scientology Celebrity Center". Didn't bother me at the time and couple years later when I became obsessed with finding out what Scientology was all about, I literally dodged a bullet there. I had almost became a cult member without even knowing it LOL

@@acidtester7470 I'm just joking because Joe does it a lot with actual specialists. People should be allowed to spread information on bad and questionable practices and groups. How can they do it well if they can't do it full time? Scientology and many other things deserve critical scrutiny and investigation. Many are conned out of their life savings over misplaced trust and hope and worse. Don't let a preference for fuzzy feelings and hopeful positivity make you an idiot. I think there is positives and negatives to most everything that exists. I don't think scientology is worse than many other religions. Are you familiar with the freezone scientology at all? There are many people who left the church and still swear that over all scientology as a subject rather than the organization/ church has seriously helped them in life. I think painting anything as a complete negative is stepping away from truth. Its not an accurate picture. Same thing vice versa. My issue with these things is not about fuzzy feelings. Scandal sells. And I think when you are making it your buisness to bash something chances are to some degree a person is going to distort the truth to sell more. For sure there are some things that need to be said and exposed and I'm all for that. Im all for looking to see things as they are not as we would like to see them. I checked out Leah Remini's show. I don't think everything she exposed is bullshit, but seems to me she is an irrelevant actress who found a situation she can milk. Her tears seemed so disingenuous it's, clear she is an actress and not a very good one at that. They play on those fuzzy feelings and the outrage. It's the sensationalism I have issue with. Its not a good trend. I'm pretty pessimistic actually. Im weary of anyone who says that their prime intention is to save people. Be it cult leaders, politicians, or those that expose such things.

And scientologists are here to 'save the world',so it must be good. Just like how Tom completely felt justified, talking crap about brooke shield's post natal depression in the name of Scientology and then still finding the gall to seek her out and apologize....in private. Most creatives are good at their job because they lack something in their 'inner world' Any natural actor will freely admit to that: we crave justification because of an innate feeling of inadequacy. We are expert in pretending that we are adequate. We're just not that ashamed to pretend to be somebody else in order to get what comes so easily to others. It's people like Miscaviage who prey on people with actual talent because most naturally gifted people are terribly insecure. I remember when a scientologist 'friend' dropped her mask when I asked her why she was picking on me in front of others. She was very accomplished. I am not. She has diplomas I don't care about. But she still felt the need to embarass me in front of people who saw something in me. That is what Scientology does: it elavates the inadequate to a level that is dependant on their salary; not the character of their being.

Now I genuinely wonder if he changed his background to cover up the effects of his steroid use.

Testosterone isn’t a steroid... and at his age, he needs it and Drs are the ones giving it to him. Plus even if it is steroids ( don’t think so, he’s too health conscious) or EPO for endurance, it doesn’t matter, it’s not like he’s fighting in the UFC where it could hurt someone because they’re juiced It looks like testosterone and a shit ton of work, that’s not a steroid body, it looks natural

I love how Joe explained Scientology to the guy who wrote the book on Scientology. #splained

I always wondered as a kid what this Dianetics book was about. The commercial made it look cool as hell.

Shoutout to everyone who still hasn't listened to a single podcast on Spotify yet and doesn't ever intend to.

@@douganderson7002 Lol, bitter that Joe abandon his UKposts audience for shitty Spotify? Sure. I came here because I am subbed to JRE and have been for years...it's in my sub box every day... You know my life is meaningless from one single UKposts comment? Are you god? How much is Spotify paying you?

This look like it would've been a good episode. Too bad I'll never have Spotify..

Instead you'd rather watch ads on UKposts and keep selling your data to Google? Some people choose the weirdest things to take a stance on.

@@nickagarrie fear of change. Nothing wrong with personal preference. But it is what it is.
