Couple things to know Joe…The Vatican artists most definitely took credit for their work but in a discreet manner. For example: in Raphael’s, “School of Athens,” he painted himself as the only person looking out of the painting at whoever is viewing it as he did with most paintings in the Vatican. Michelangelo as well. Also put himself in many paintings or depictions in The Vatican. Michelangelo did not paint the Sistine chapel on his back, although everyone likes to think so. It is true he did design & build his scaffolding because he did not trust anyone else to do it. He never laid on his back but stood up for over five of his still developing years which, in result, made him never able to look at anything directly in front of him again & also made his back crooked for the rest of his life. It’s also written in the Bible texts of the New Testament, that Jesus did descend into Hell to free the souls of those trapped before him before resurrecting on the third day. Lastly, there are many many depictions of demons in the Vatican. It’s to display the common theme of the time, “As Above So Below.” If there is good, there is also bad right around the corner.
