A friend who was a tank commander in the 6 Day War told me that the attack on Yom Kippur was really a blessing for Israel. Why? Everybody was in Shul (Synagogue) so the mobilization began with many reservists already concentrated at a group pickup point. The civilian buses immediately became troop transports, according to plan. Mobilization was accomplished in less than 12 hours. If it had not been such a important holy day, the reservists would have been scattered all over the country, scrambling to find transport.

Surely the reservists in any given synagogue are from units spread all across the Golan front, West Bank and Sinai. If they are deploying to their respective units, the advantage of fewer pick up points is lost. So there had to be some additional logistical planning to get the reservists to the right units.

I remember that in high school, the school took us the the valley of tears memorial and we heard the story directly from Avigdor Kahalani and I have to say, it was the first time I have ever seen a truly great man, and the first time I saw a what seamed to me like a war hearo. I remember him telling us that he comes to the memorial every year to honour his soldiers and friends. when he finished the telling us the story of the battle we all stood for a moment of silence to honour the dead, but as we stood in silence Kahalani shed tears for his dead friends. as much of a victory as the war was it was a greater loss.

As an armored tactics instructor in the early 1980's at Ft Knox we would often have students from friendly foreign countries enrolled. One semester we had a senior Israeli NCO/tank commander who had been involved in the Yom Kippur fight. He was a wealth of information and spoke to us of his part in the battle in the northern sector, tactics used plus logistics and fire support. His stories were fascinating and for a good part of one day, he was the instructor and I was the student. Several years later I was fortunate enough to be TDY to Israel and worked directly with the IDF. The respect for the nation of Israel I gained in those months has lasted a lifetime. The United States must never turn its back on this great nation and its people. They alone are our 'only' true allies in the Middle East.

my neighbour in munich worked for telemit, a manufacturer of military communication systems. he told me that the syrian tankers had a unique communication system. only the unit commanders could send and recieve messages, all others could only recieve. this meant that the unit commander‘s tanks had 2 antennae (with pennants no less) and all others had only one. it was therefore relatively easy to indentify the commanders‘ tanks and attack them first, leading the rest leaderless.
@clemsondriver9214
@clemsondriver9214 2 роки тому
Thats correct but its not unique, its just standard Soviet military doctrine. USSR sold them the tanks, trained them on how to use them and showed them battle tactics and doctrine. Doctrine says that for a unit commander they get a K-variant of the tank with K standing for Komandirskiy. The K-variant of the standard tank has an extra radio which of course gets an extra antenna. There's a novel called Red Storm Rising written in the 80's by Tom Clancy and in it a fictional battle took place between American and Soviet tankers. The American tankers were trained to look out for enemy tanks with an two radio antennas because that means that they are a platoon or company commander. Tom Clancy is known for writing books that are pretty technically accurate because he actually did research and probably got to interview folks and do tours and whatnot.

If I remember correctly, one of the experiences the Israeli tankers made on the Golan heights, directly influenced the design choice of the Merkava to have a back door as feature which was made possible from the fact that the Merkava has its engine in the front where as most tanks have their engines in the rear. During the fighting on the Golan hights, the Centurion tanks the British issued to the Israelis would run out of amunition due to the prolonged fighting and the crews had to load new rounds from units in the rear which has proved to be quite cumbersome and problematic under fire. So in a similar situation resupplying the Merkava would be far easier and safer compared to the Centurions.

They were worse from winter to summer. I was a volunteer 91-95 in the infantry division. We walked into Knin, which was conquered by capturing two brigades. We broke out on the Bosnian border and liberated the besieged Bihač with the 5th Bosnian Army. All this in 8 days, which has never been achieved anywhere. But that was the deal with the USA & UN. We have not violated any law of war. Long live Croatia.

A personal story. I was 6yo at the time. My father's cousin was severely wounded in the Golan Heights while fighting in a special commando unit (Shaked). Was hit from thigh to chest with several machine-gun bullets. Was left with one lung. He stayed in an hospital for about a year, within walking distance from my home. Used to visit him from time to time to gorge on chocolates which he always had. Great guy. Became a top executive in one of Israel's biggest manufacturing firms. Always smiled. What a guy.

After some time these three bullies tried to take him down again but this time the kid struck first and they were severely beaten leaving their things for the kid to take. For the third time, they struck at the kid while was praying, but although they managed to beat him at first the kid fought back and defeated them again even chasing the biggest bully to his house. When speaking of possession of the Golan heights, note that when Syria held the Golan, prior to 1967, they routinely used the high ground to bombard Israeli towns and villages below the heights with random artillery attacks. There's a reason Israel took the Golan in '67, and it wasn't because of a desire for territorial expansion. @@jamese5936Rhodesia did not have tanks until South Africa gave them about 6 brand new T 54/55 tanks from a cargo ship they intercepted. If I recall correctly, Nkomo's Zipra forces did have tanks, and were preparing a conventional war against Rhodesia. Rhodesia was devastated by the international sanctions, but kept up the fight against overwhelming odds by improvising, stealing, or busting sanctions whenever possible. They were so short of cannon ammunition for their Hawker Hunters that the pilots became adept at taking out individual vehicles with extremely short bursts of 4/5 shots only. Of course South Africa did help by providing Alouettes and Eland 90 armoured cars, as well as South African Police and SADF personnel up to 1977 or 78. There were South African civilians that volunteered to join the Rhodesian Armed Forces too, as well as numerous volunteers from around the world, but on the whole, the Rhodesian forces were always outnumbered. As a young South African I wanted to go help Rhodesia fight communism when I was old enough, but the war ended when I was 11. TBH I did not know about the social injustices of the time. If you get the opportunity, read up on RLI operations and the outdated equipment they used to overwhelm a formidable foe. Further reading of Selous Scout operations against terrorist bases manned by thousands of soldiers by heavily outnumbered Rhodesians should inform you of the sound training, tactics, and dedication of thise men. Consider that the Rhodesians took earthmoving equipment they found in Mozambique on one operation because such equipment was denied them by the sanctions.

The answer to that is more complex than at first sight. In war we see the fastest and greatest advances, especially in the past. Your point does raise the question in the light of modern technology, of whether we now NEED war in order to advance. I believe that for the most part not, but in some part we still appear to. What does one gain from wars nowadays? Nothing, land is never going to help you, gold, food, women, plunder??? What the heck do you need those for in todays modern age of global trade cooperation? So wjy make war then? Religious differences? Sure but isn't it about time we stopped using religion as an excuse for hatred and war ?? Really!!!! You think your god wants war ??? Well??? What kind of sick twisted logic is that? No, never. So, of technology and progress, and enui ... Perhaps without war there is no need to progress, so stagnation will occur. But look at modern progress, the majority of which was made because of space exploration- NOT WAR !!! Ward are by their very nature disruptive and destructive, not to mention painful and anguished for loved ones left at home. So, can we please stop taking the Lord GOD's name in vain - the first rule is - THOU SHALT NOT KILL THY FELLOW MAN. So stop doing that and stop the lies and hyped hatred. Learn to forgive, turn the other cheek and live in peace and prosperity.

Something that he told me which i found interesting was that when he was in SE Asia, that he would volunteer for every extra mission he could get. @@omarzahraoui805 You are spamming this nonsense on every video that talks about the Israelis winning any battle. Its annoying. Israel has a population of 7,000,000 people, they have never fielded an army even close to 6,000,000 strong. Maybe you got the numbers backwards idk.

They knew exactly how effective it was. Because it was litterally designed to fight against the heavy tanks such as the IS-2 which had thicker frontal amor than a T-62.

The similar 'suprise' attack happened on 7th of Oct, the same Sabbath day!! When Isralien ppl and soldiers were on holiday. A huge mistake again, from. Isralien Intelligence Service, and Army leadership too. Caused high price and new national trauma for Isralien ppl, civils especially. Uff.
