That is not true, sadly Ireland has never achieved the Irish Republic that Joseph Plunkett put his signature to, what do you think the Irish civil war was about?. Let's not also forget that Joseph and his 13 rebel comrades went to their graves believing that they were hated by the Irish people, which really is tragic.

Yes in the song he says he had to rise from his sick bed to join those in Dublin at the GPO understand that many of the leaders were there if you don't know the GPO is the Grand Post Office in Dublin the bullet holes are still visible. There were multiple rebels in various quadrants of Dublin and others in other areas and cities during the Easter Rising it was brave it was doomed but it was valiant

My wife and I were on a Dublin tour bus and when we passed by the Kilmainham Gaol the driver told the sad story of Joseph and Grace and then proceeded to sing this song in a beautiful Irish tenor. I don’t think there was a dry eye on that bus. My favorite memory of our trip.

Back in the early 80's I was rushing to catch the 84 bus out to Greystones and just missed it as I ran up to the stop. As I stood there at the empty bus stop cursing the Feckin Bus driver a car suddenly stopped and the driver asked if I was going to Greystones, delighted with the lift I hopped in and away we drove. Although I didn't know it at the time the guy who stopped was none other than Jim McCann who was on his way to play a gig in the Woodlands Hotel in Greystones. Lovely, friendly, chatty with the unmistakable warmth and wit of a true Dub, it was raining when he picked me up and drove out of his way to drop me at my girlfriend's door. I only found out afterwards who he really was but I've never forgotten what a decent and sound guy he was. I've always LOVED this song and the introduction by Jim McCann and singing it in the Chapel in Kilmainham seems to make it all the more poignant. Taken from this life far too soon, rest well Jim ....

*This Irish ballad, written in 1985 by brothers Frank and Seán O'Meara, tells the tragic story of Grace Gifford, who married her fiancé, rebel leader Joseph Mary Plunkett, in Dublin's notorious Kilmainham Gaol prison. Seven hours after the 15-minute wedding ceremony in the austere prison chapel, Plunkett was executed by firing squad for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin. In 1986, Jim McCann (Dublin-born folk artist and singer), with his extraordinary voice and interpretation, released this beautiful and sad song. It's impossible not to cry when you look at his verses and know his story!* 💔😢

Brown's victories in the Independence War, the Cisplatine War and the Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata earned the respect and appreciation of the Argentine people, and he is regarded as one of Argentina's national heroes. And besides, we had an important Irish community here, which means that we have a bunch of Irish descendants here, hahaha. In fact, many people here celebrate St. Patrick Day. In addition to it, Ireland was the only European country that supported Argentina because of the Malvinas, I'm not trying to bring that debate, I only show you that both Ireland and Argentina, have been always linked in many ways along the history. And finally, Irish Rugby fans, were in favor and they even took to the streets claiming that Pumas deserve to take part in an important competition. I can tell you like music, Can't you? Let me tell you that I'm a blind person and I'm trying to learn English. Anyway... One of my tools for achieving my gol is to listen to Irish songs,. Music is an excellent way for absorbing a new language. Greetings my friend.@@djbillybopdjbillybop2817

People tend to forget of course that Grace lost "2 men" in her life over that 24hrs as her Bother-in-Law Thomas MacDonagh (who was married to Grace’s sister Muriel) was also executed on the morning of 3rd May which was Grace and Joe's wedding day. Muriel also died 14 months later in a tragic swimming accident at Skerries whilst on a short holiday with other Easter Rising widows. All very sad for Grace. All honour to the Irish Republican Brotherhood, The Irish Citizen Army, The Irish Volunteers, The Women of Cumann na mBan and the boys of Na Fianna Eireann. May their Names and Courage never be forgotten. Also thinking of young Sean (Jack) Healy the youngest of the Easter Rising Martyr’s..it breaks my heart every time I see that young mans photo, so very brave and so fearless. RIP young man.

Muriel was on holiday with Barbara when Muriel died at Skerries, however Donagh was in hospital at the time with a broken back. JM Plunkett fought for freedom - not some ideal of 'patriotism'. The freedom of people of flesh and blood, for their right of self determinism. When you fight you take the risk of dying. Plunkett would have accepted the truth of that. He took his risk and he died for it.

A very emotive song regardless of which side of history you take. The humanity is often completely forgotten about in wars, people focus on what is always less important... Glad Jim gave up the studies, his singing was a greater gift....

Every time I hear this song my eyes well up with tears, the love between Joe and Grace will last for many many years. Any one would be most fortunate to have a love that would last forever, but for fifteen minutes the magnitude of execution for Ireland's freedom made their love last a lifetime. God bless the men and women that usurped the yoke of the crown to give Eire it's freedom from tyranny.

Its not thr Easter rising...... its the irish rebellion against englands slavery..... religion at that time was irrelevant........
@skippership7
@skippership7 2 роки тому
@@bockariemansaray9196 By far the best version of this wonderful song...however, it is the "Easter Rising" and as for "Englands Slavery"...Wow hold on there...I seem to remember that the person responsible for illegally implementing Order 256 was a proud "Scottish" clansman? And wasn't the British PM at the time MP for East Fife, isn't that in Scotland? and therefore he was voted into power by the Scottish people not the English, the same man who ignored warmings in the HofC from Irish MP's like John Dillon. And wasn't the man calling publicly for James Connolly's execution an Irishman? And wasn't it the local Dublin population who spat on and swore at the rebels as they were being arrested? And of course, no one ever mentions to fact that Grace was thrown into prison by the Irish Free State for standing by the aims of the 1916 Proclamation that these brave men and women fought for in1916. The truth is we all have their blood on our hands to a greater or lesser extent, but it's still their blood on our hands. Shame on us all.
