Huge waste of time. Ya, pick up the log and just set it in the jig. Hate to break it to you, but logs are heavy. It's why we cut them on the ground. Unless you have an excavator, but then you could just hold the log with the excavator.

I agree 100%!! Logs are heavy. Plus once you put the log in the jig the teeth grab it and you can’t slide it to the position you want without wrestling with it. By the time you finish building that jig, I could have cut up 1000 logs. Get a tractor with a grapple and life is great!

We used to lift logs off the ground for cutting using two heavy duty bumper jacks with a pc of chain, also same idea as this ,less work,is using metal car ramp with a scrap snow chain attached to the ramp with bolts,can drag the log onto it using a winch,or even simply chaining it to the truck bumper and dragging onto the ramp,can recall variations of this working in the western rockies doing posts and firewood for seasonal work. So a couple of oddities. At 1min it looked like you were drawing 45s, but they turned into 30s. Then when cutting, you had the long end captured in the spikes versus the short end. You could pull the log forwards into the work zone if you pushed it the other way, maybe then needing one or two more supports. Neat rig though...amazing what a cutting wheel and mig welder can do !

@dans1430

...yes, but just because one built something from scratch, that doesn't mean it's going to work. This looks a little cumbersome to operate. So you lop off 12-15" piece of log, but then to get the next cut, you have to lift up the log, to get it off the 'serrations', at the same time you push and hold the hanging rebar away from the log so when you slide it out to cut more, it doesn't grab. Next step, add a simple mechanism that pushes and hold the rebar away. ...just the natural progression of the idea.

This needs some improvement to make it more durable, but something most are missing is it gets the material to a more ergonomic height for cutting. IF you don't cut all day, that slight bent over position just kills my low back. I have nearly 20 trees on a half acre, plus 150-200 feet of laurel hedges on the perimeter, a 'fence', (9 tree are widow making doug firs, up to 5' diameter, it's Oregon, they like it here. I've been working for 22 years to try to catch up with 40 years of previous owners not doing any tree maintenance. After a big wind storm 7-8 years ago, I came out in the morning and found a 8'9" diameter windfall that hit perfectly stub down. I had to dig the effer out; it was about 18' in the ground). I have to keep it pruned and cleaned up, myself, since I'm nearly 68 and can't afford to pay someone to do the work. I can't afford to buy a log lifter, and most I've looked at simply get them off the ground for cutting. 90% of what I cut is 2-8". This is a decent idea, needing some improvement, and is something I can put together for the cost of some time, and MIG wire/gas. I'm not falling trees and bucking them, that's what most lifters are for, that gets them high enough. I'm cutting easily liftable limbs. If too long, and heavy, a single cut or two changes, that. Thats all good and well until them bones, joints, and muscles aren’t working like they used to. Honestly, even if your body is in good shape its better to take care of it before you break it. I used to work as an CNA in a nursing home when I was 18. That had really opened my eyes to what I could end up feeling like when I get old.

Usually just put logs on logs to cut them instead of moving around a big contraption and feeding logs in.

Agreed that is a quicker way. But with this cool device, you're not bending over and working in awkward positions or crouching. your statement is true oh, I'm guessing you are about 28 LOL. Once you get older these little things make such a big difference in the longevity of your body. The first time I used a Peavey I was in love. The kind that have the lift up action so your chain doesn't hit the dirt. Getting older has its advantages and definite disadvantages. Worksafe everyone and work practical if you can! I'm only 43 and my knees are absolutely shot. I miss climbing and felling, if I didn't have time crunch on me all the time I'd probably still be doing that job. All you bosses out there that Russian employees, you can suck it. I worked with someone that worked with an 18 year old and on his crew he didn't even work 5 days. Come Friday and the pressure is on the utility boss 2 get a tree on the ground before the weekend..... sh*t rolls downhill. He pulled a giant top on to himself, they even discussed which way he was to move safely to after the tree had started coming over. The top was giant it shouldn't have been. The top was giant because the foreman was being rushed. Worksafe

It is a cool idea - but a looooot of work just to have a nice sawing rig. I mean - the only way this is better than a standard sawhorse is that the wood stays put even at the very last cut.
@CoolKoon
@CoolKoon 2 роки тому
Actually a sawhorse becomes kinda a PITA to use for the last few cuts. But I agree, this thing is only worth constructing to someone who'd have to cut an insane amount of logs on a regular basis.
@nilesbutler8638
@nilesbutler8638 2 роки тому
@@CoolKoon Maybe my sawhorse is rare - but the 25cm logs I usually cut for my indoor fireplaces only really produce a problem on the very last cut, since it spans ca 45cm. But yeah, that las cut is a recurring problem. Usually I´ll roll the log down and cut it on the ground, breaking the last bridge with a kick.

That sure was an awful lot of cutting and welding for a log holder. Just make a V shaped holder out of pipe that is lower to the ground and holds one end of the log up in the air, done. Lifting heavier logs that high would be a waste of work and in some cases impossible.
@udavidism
@udavidism 2 роки тому
@Joseph S. If I did it would be a whole lot less metal cutting, welding, less lifting logs and fighting them through that monstrosity.
