You can easily use an old phone to do this as well since virtually all mobile phones since the beginning has an exposed AT interface via the modem and you just connect with a serial interface just like the example here in the video. I have reused many old mobile phones as remote alarm senders in the field. I charge the phones with solar cells and they run forever unless something goes wrong... I do all of this with an atmega328 - which runs from the phone battery as well - and if the battery stops charging it sends an SMS when it falls below 10% so I can go out and swap the phone. Very cheap and useful usage for old phones!

Hey Scott, I love your videos! I'm just a beginner in electronics world and still only blinking LEDs and stuff like that, but I had an idea of using smartphone as accelerometer/gyroscope alarm for my motorcycle, but most android phones do not want to do anything while screen is off, so, are unusable... But this seems like it could be a way to go, could it be used on battery thats charged by generator and have some movement detectors? My idea is to send sms or call if bike is moved, maybe even do some feedback for the one moving it.

Do developers typically write software on top of AT Commands (i.e., they create libraries that ultimately sends AT commands to the M95 chip to get it to do things like send SMS (and other features of the module))?

please help, the gsm module sends a message to the phone,,but how can you send a message back to gsm module?,,,example i will text "UNLOCK" to the gsm module then a pin will be high and a door will unlock.

Hallo Scott, ich weiß das Video ist schon etwas älter aber ich benötoge gerade das SMS modul für ein Projekt. Nur leider funktiert es nicht im Seriellen Monitor bekomm ich nur: Write your SMS: Send SMS..... Sucess funktioniert das board auch mit 9 Volt oder benötige ich umbedingt 12 Volt ? I have something like this only using a small PICAXE micro attached to the "AC fail" line on a UPS, it sends me a message when the AC line flickers a bit, completely fails and when it comes back on

One would think they switched it on the labelling for Tx/Rx so you didn't switch them up accidentally, so any beginner that didn't know that you had to insert them backwards would get it right first time.

SvizzTech Du kannst das Modul über die RS232 Schnittstelle deines PIs steuern, du kennst sogar die Befehle für das Modul. Und sogar die Baudrate!

46 is the ASCII code for a dot ('.'), its probably the code that sends a SMS at the end of a sentence.

So I have a 12V 1A adapter, and I removed the maxim thingy from the GSM module. But when I plugged the power source in, the thing started to fizz and I saw smoke coming out. So why do you say that it can handle 12 volts?

+joster222 Okay I DIY'd an adapter of 4.5V and 500mA. No more sizzling or smoke. But now I have a different problem. I inserted the Simcard, but now it justs blinks a few times and then stops. Does that mean it can't connect? I made sure that the simcard is correctly inserted.

Hallo, vielen Dank für das starke Video, ich würde auch gerne SMS mit dem TC35 verschicken, mein Problem ist, aber,dass es sich nicht verbindet. Ich habe den Code auf meiner Prepaid SIM entfernt, aber nachdem ich auf Verbinden drücke blinkt die Lampe ohne Ergebnis, habe es an mehreren Orten versucht und auch mit verschiedenen Stromversorgungen, ich weiß momentan echt nicht weiter Hilfe wäre nett, danke

well the last time i checked Arduino can do only simple or/and/if commands and can only process up to 8 bits of data or higher depends on your chip,but a modern day phone has a CPU in it which can process farrrrrr more data than a simple chip

BeGamerSl well, other processors can work with 32 or 64 bits but they still do the same operations, the only limit of the chip that arduino uses is the flash storage size

GSM is changing. 3g is being phased out world wide. Unless your module is 4g capable it may stop working. To find out when, check your mobile service provider!

Can you use this same principle to send Cellular data? Im designing a tablet on my own to really push my knowledge. Hi!I think this is the perfect Project to get my home alarm to send an intruder alarm via GSM/SMS. But I'm a little confused how the Arduino is trigged at an alarm ...The switch at the GSM board is just to get the board ready=establish connection with the GSM Net. Right?or...Will the predefined SMS message be sent when switch at the GSM board is pressed?or ..Should some pin at the Arduino be activated in order to send a SMS? If yes, then the sketch for Arduino would be rewritten?Nice if you will sort this out, because I want to send a SMS when my home alarm is activated!Regards misterleffe

its my understanding that "GSM" is no longer working! the phone system has changed and i dont think your device will work? they have gone to "LTE" is this correct? and is this video obsolete?

It depends on your mobile operator. Some operators have stopped supporting GSM/2G and therefore require a 3G/LTE compatible module. Even when it is something as simple as sending a SMS. Other operators still support GSM/2G. You have to ask the mobile operator what they support.

Just wander into a supermarket and ask if they have SIM cards. They usually do. If not, go into a phone shop and ask them for one.
