Learn Greek with Lina

6 років тому

If you are serious about learning Modern Greek, you cannot avoid the declension of nouns.
First you have to have a concrete understanding of the cases and their use.
The next step is of course the Grammar. Groups of nouns, different endings and special attention to the accent, which can be tricky especially for beginners!
In this lesson we're learning a simple masculine noun in -ος, φίλος, which means "friend". There are many other nouns that follow the same declension.

I am very glad to see your new video. In my country, South Korea, it is very difficult to learn modern Greek, although there are a few learners. I have been studying ancient Greek to read the works of the famous philosophies and dramatists. Meanwhile, I got interested in modern Greek. I really love greek history, language and cultural heritages.

Hello, thank you so much for your comment. These are some very good motives to start learning Greek and I really admire you for that. I am sure that modern Greek seems easy compared to ancient Greek! Also it's always interesting to see how the language evolved through time. Let me know about your progress! :)

I’ve been learning Greek now for several months, little and often each day and slowly getting a grasp of things. Just found this channel just as I’m trying to pick up the accusative case in my book. These videos are like going into warp speed and so well presented that lots of things stick. My fave Greek channel by far I gotta say!! Time to explore the other vids😀

Hi Lina! I’ve got a question:When you said the sentence «ο φίλος του φίλους μου έχει έναυσμα φίλο» why didn’t you say τον φίλο for the accusative? Thank you so much I love this!
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hello! "Ο φίλος του φίλου μου έχει έναν φίλο". My friend's friend has A friend. "Τον" is the definite article, while "έναν" is the indefinite article. In this case we need the indefinite article since we are not specific about this friend. If I said "Ο φίλος του φίλου μου έχει τον φίλο" it would mean "My friend's friend has THE friend" which doesn't really make any sense in English or Greek. I hope I helped!

You can see two eg. about this. "Don't touch the knife" Μην πιάσεις το μαχαίρι and I don’t have time to study" Δεν έχω χρόνο να διαβάσω. Α word "μην" shows order eg Don't do it
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hello, and thanks for watching! A very good question and thanks to Kerveros for replying. Indeed "μη(ν)" is mostly used with verbs in the imperative to express an order: "Μην πας!" - "Don't go!". However it is also used in subordinate clauses: "Μου είπε να μην πάω" - "He told me not to go". On the other hand "δε(ν)" is used with verbs in the indicative. "Δεν θα πάω" - Ι will not go".

Hello Lina, thank you for your videos. I am Brazilian and I learned a little bit about ancient Greek. Now, I am learning modern greek. I would like to ask if it doesn't have dative in Modern Greek? Thank you (:
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 5 років тому
Hello Bruno! There is no dative anymore! That's good news, right? However, there are some fixed expressions in the dative that come from Ancient Greek and are still written the same: εν πάσει περιπτώσει, εν δράσει, etc.
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 5 років тому
Hi! The old infinitive is gone, but there is the modern infinitive, that is used along with the auxiliary verb "έχω" το form some compound tenses (έχω πάει). Also, the Ancient Greek infinitive is still used in some fixed expressions such as "τα προς το ζην", "φερ' ειπείν", "εις το επανιδείν" etc:

@user-xh9rz7rf8l
@user-xh9rz7rf8l 2 роки тому
There isn't word stastra, but you probably mean: (στ' άστρα / st' astra) witch means "in the stars - I will go in the stars". The normal expression is: στα άστρα, but because there are two coherent "a" the article gets apostrophe.

How do you do this with female and neuter nouns?!
@aggelosn.6846
@aggelosn.6846 5 років тому
Feminine: η Ακρόπολη (the Acropolis) της Ακρόπολης, την Ακρόπολη, Ακρόπολη. Plural: Οι Ακροπόλεις, των Ακροπόλεων, τις Ακροπόλεις, Ακροπόλεις. Neuter: το παιδί (the child) του παιδιού, το παιδί, παιδί. Plural: τα παιδιά, των παιδιών, τα παιδιά, παιδιά. As you see some of these are overlapping. In older and ancient greek they were all different but in modern greek they were simplified (eg in old greek it went: η Ακρόπολις, της Ακροπόλεως, την Ακρόπολην, Ακρόπολη....). As you see the English translation has remained in the old version, just like other greek words (diagnosis, synopsis, osteoporosis.....) :) I hope I helped
