I camped in 20 degrees farenheit with a foam pad and a 0° F bag. I also wore a fleece sweater but found myself opening the bag slightly to cool off! I also covered my face in a blanket. It was surreal waking up in a thick layer of frost!

i clicked on this video for a laugh thinking "oh, how hard can it be to lay in a hammock" but damn!! It was actually really informative man.

Also, there is no wrong way to lay in a hammock when drunk.

My 12 year old daughter and I just went backpacking with hammocks (3 nights, 55 miles) for the first time. Even though I did ALL 3 of those things you bring up wrong, it was still a better experience than I've had in a tent. Around here if the ground is good you're on a slope and if it's flat you're dealing with lava rocks and scrub oak grit. This allowed us to find a spot just about anywhere we wanted to with a minimum of preparations. I also loved that I could pack camp by shoving everything into a bag. Now that I've seen a couple of your videos, I cannot wait to go out and do it right.

Thanks! -) 68 degrees is when you can start getting chilled in a uninsulated hammock. -) A underquilt goes under the hammack to provide un-compressed insulation. there are hammocks with a insulation-pad pocket. -) Lay in the hammock asymmetrically instead of banana-style. -) 12 to 17 feet between trees to give a 30 degree strap config as measured with finger-trick. -) A ridge line should just be taut, I need to try this to hang stuff above me. -) and from comments, ventilation is a big plus, but - to limit chill, limit airflow. -) hang low enough to sit, double hammock over to make more comfy

Living in a tropical country i never expected to see a hammock used in cold weather. So i learned a couple of things with this video. If the hammock is extremely wide you can lay down completely perpendicular to the hammock instead of diagonal. When i saw the video all i can think of was "A gringo who knows how to use a hammock" 😂😂😂👍👍Wonderful

Good advice for campers who start using a hammock. Something a new person never thinks of and just one of many benefits of a hammock ...360 degree ventilation. I like to use a Therm-a-rest mummy shaped self inflating mattress in my hammock. I have it about 1/2 to 3/4 inflated so it will conform to my body and the hammock. It does not need to be fully inflated since you are not sleeping on the ground with roots , pine cones , pebbles or anything poking you in the backside. By the way on that rare occasion if you ever have to use your hammock as a solo tent the mattress is already with you. Here in Florida I have only used a under quilt a couple of times. You mentioned a double layer hammock. One great invention and for insects a nightmare. Mosquitoes have never bitten me threw a double bottom hammock but feasted on me in a single layer one. I'm referring to hammocks with a built in ( top ) bug netting which leaves the bottom exposed. Not the hammock which has netting surrounding them. "The Ultimate Hang " that's one book everyone should read. . I have been hammock camping for over 60 years and I learned a lot from it.

My dad has a canvas hammock on a stand that I sleep in when I visit. He has a small house with no guest room but the hammock is set up in the living room. It's inside, but winter in the north in a room that isn't well heated is still chilly so I have a sleeping bag under me and a blanket over. I either sleep at a diagonal or nearly sitting up with my upper body pretty high in the hammock and my legs at the lowest part folded up butterfly style.

It dropped to 27°F when I was out camping in june! and all I had was a cheap wool camp blanket... needless to say I "creeked" when I got up in the morning. But at least I know my fire skills are on point.

I hang two hammocks, nice nylon slippery one on the inside. Put the yoga mat in the middle (inbetween both hammocks) for insulation. $5 from Kmart yoga mat. My outside hammock is just a cotton south american type. You can innovate, its not hard, dont spend a fortune. I also used a sleeping bag with the yoga mat inside it as an inner lining. Got sleeping bag for $6 from the charity second hand store.

Before hammocks I'd bring my sheep skin with me out instead of a sleeping pad. I find that just bringing my reindeer or sheep skin works better than any pad because you can't really compress it to a point where it loses it's insulation. With that said, I do live in Scandinavia and it can get kind of cold while camping in Norway (I'm actually from Denmark, but we go there during winters because Norway is gorgeous), so a hide won't always be enough during winters here and I made my own under-quilt from a sleeping bag. I still bring the hide, the only downside to a hide is the weight. But if you're strong it's not really an issue because you can use the sheep or reindeer skin to warm yourself when you're walking or sitting around the fire. My Icelandic sheep skin is good to down around 20 fahrenheit (below -6 degrees celsius) if I use a tarp and an appropriate sleeping bag. Location can also have something to do with it. If you can, I would recommend giving it a go. If you're all about that ultra-light life, it's not for you.

I just came from Progresso Mexico.Our tour guide on the way to a cenote told us that the people near the village have houses that are so small they don't have beds, but sleep in hammocks.

Thanks for all the great info! 95% of my hammocks were Hatteras type hammocks with a huge lawn stand, and a very inexpensive and dangerous! nylon with screen sewn in hammock used to camp in the snow in Yosemite in Oct! Brrrrrr. Knowing more would have saved me a fall when that zipper broke on the net attached to the nylon! And my butt wouldn't have frozen off if I had even heard about under quilts! Even then, when I retreated to my tent, I knew then that I wanted to switch a hammock to get off the ground! Since then, I want one to sleep in in my home and camp in, and your vid just opened up my world! Saved me from making more hammock mistakes and taught me so much! (Esp. the hammock hanging angle!!! and buying a wide enough hammock to sleep diagonally! TYSM!

I used to live in mexico and there wasn't a mattress in 150 miles. I have a ruptured disk at L4-L5 and I slept in a hammock for three years. He is rite about laying at an angle, you are perfectly flat. Never buy a knotted hammock no matter how small the thread is you will feel every one of them. get a woven one or cloth like his.

Putting your pack in the hammock once it's up, makes it more stable to install sleeping pad or adding insulation.

Just got my first hammock. Not planning on using it for camping anytime soon, but I appreciate the advice.

I have that same pad and have been using it for hammock camping for over a decade. Works great. Below freezing, I add another pad with my 20 deg. sleeping bag. Works great. I have no desire to switch to an underquilt. But I sleep hot. My buddy who has blood circulation problems switched to an underquilt and still uses a 0 deg. bag in below freezing temps. I use a breathable bivvy sack in the case of cold winds in cold temps. I find hammocks so much more comfy for sleeping than in a tent with even a 3" inflatable pad.

Love my hammock but outside of summer camping the hammock , quilts & overhead tarp is just simply too heavy and even some 4 season tents are lighter than the hammock gear but it's hard to beat the comfort of the hammock vs crawling into a tent . Great video, very informative. Thank you

Excellent tips! When I bought mine, I met a fellow at the store who told me about these. I'm quite tall, so it's especially important to get a wider hammock - it gives me enough room to angle my body.

I don't have a hammock, I don't plan to get a hammock any time soon yet I watched it and I must say, this was an incredibly informative video. The majority of it wasn't helpful to someone so casual as myself, but that last tip and a half. There's always someone smarter/better than you at something, and for me today, that thing is laying in a hammock.

I started sleeping in a hammock in my home because of back pain. I don't wake up crippled anymore! And yes, I'm often a side sleeper. It's going on 5 years now. I use a second hammock with a down comforter under my sleeping hammock, for warmth. I truly can't sleep without pain in a bed anymore. So glad I found this solution for my back. I suggest it to everyone who suffers pressure point pain when reclining.

I had a cold night sleeping at Horsepens 40 in the early spring and it got down to about 36 degrees during the night. I was camping with a down sleeping bag that I used as an under quilt underneath my hammock, and the only problem i ran into was my head was slightly exposed at the top. Needless to say, I woke up from the cold, and my head was about as cold as a piece of ice. I’ve never been so pissed off in my whole life. Motto of the story? Buy a real underquilt that fits the entire length of the hammock, and make sure it doesn’t have any holes that will let in the cold. You’ll be happy you made the investment.

Great video! I’ve been using a hammock for the last three years and love it. The best sleep I’ve ever had in the woods. I started with a nine foot long hammock (because it was cheap and had a built in bug net) and found that there is a ratio of height to length of hammock (I’ve found about twice my height is a good length). So I purchased a twelve foot hammock, let the kids use the first hammock and haven’t looked back (I bought an additional bug net for the longer hammock). The only thing I noticed you didn’t mention was using an inflatable pillow. I’ve used one in both hammocks and really like the additional support for my head even in an asymmetrical or cross body lay.

Great video I wish I had watched it earlier. I just got my first hammock, and Yes I did all of them. I used a wool blanket to lay on because I knew it was going to get to 50 degrees. It worked fine at first, but with wiggling it all bunched up. Ouch and burr. Thank you. 👍

The only time I ever slept in my hammock I slept in it with my friend sharing a sleeping bag. Though I had growing pains in my legs that night so I kept waking him up. We were warm though. :)

This would have helped me so much four years ago when I first started hammock camping. XD since then I've learned so much. I kinda disagree on the UQ stuff, but comfort levels vary from person to person. I've slept down to 40*F with literally nothing but my hammock and a tarp. Below that I add a Thermarest XLite and cuccoon a sleeping bag around my hammock so it's kind of like a mix between UQ and TQ. Back to the 40*, No sleeping bag or mat or anything. I sleep in long johns, a hoodie, and thick wool socks. I hang with my butt literally three inches off the ground. I pitch my tarp where it is just a few inches from my face. I curl up in a ball in the bottom of my hammock. Then I chunk a Nalgene in my stuff sack attached to my hammock, flip it over myself, cuccoon myself up, and I'm warm. Slept who knows how many nights like that. My hammock is the Hummingbird Single, 10' (5oz) and the tarp is the Hummingbird Heron (11oz). My sleeping pad is 2.8 rated, and the sleeping bags I use depend on the temperature, the coldest I've gone to is 18*F.

I'd also like to add, it's a good idea to put sticks between the strap and the tree, so there's minimal strain on the tree and less damage, so the strap is resting an tight around the sticks and not the trees itself
