When I was a kid my father owned a shoe factory. One of my father’s employees, a kind man named Carl, developed his own shoe which was an athletic type utilizing modern materials. It was the first time I ever saw a “sneaker”. I was mesmerized. Unfortunately I wasn’t paying attention and left the prototype sitting on a conveyor belt and it was destroyed, damaging some of the equipment in the process. My father was furious and demanded to know who was responsible. I was too afraid to speak up and so Carl took the blame. My father fired him that day. I was ashamed.

I will never again ask, "Why are these shoes so expensive?" Now I know. But I can't imagine massive warehouses full of thousands of these craftsmen making shoes for the world. So now I wonder what the automated, machine-made process looks like, that might turn out a pair of these types of shoes for $99. That pair of shoes should be sitting in some big Art Museum. I was dumbfounded.

I started my apprentice in 81, in an 4 th. generation business which has been established 1874, I can tell you by far, this is world class , even the technic they use is really old school crafting, the one contrast compare to European or western technic is the different use of the knife technic, in western technic, you cut with the knife in opposite direction, and the knife has a different shape........ Even the tools look quite similar to our tools, but a lot of the branding technic at the end of the Vid shows the use of tools which are often not being produced anymore, for instance, I posses some, some of them more than 50 years old, tools for branding the inner arch edge which called half round edging, they don't exist anymore........ They show shoemaking on the by far, world finest completion. an sharp eye, an brilliant aesthetic outcome !!!!!! This is the reinvention of traditional shoe crafting on the highest gentle Level. Boys, I can tell you if you entering a Master class in Germany, your work will be granted with the highest score.

Nostalgic...my grandfather was a cobbler who ran his own place out of Wainwright, Alberta for decades. He eventually sold his shop to be closer to family instead of commuting back and forth every few days from there to Edmonton...but when he was working on shoes, he just seemed so happy, in his element, doing what he knew best. He was still very mentally and physically sound even in his old age. He saved one of the old super heavy metal sewing machines (like in the video) from his shop and still used it at home whenever one of us grandkids needed something fixed ...lost him last May to COVID...miss you so much grandpa.

@@lordjaashin Bot to be a nitpick but shoemakers are craftsmen. Those who take their craft to stupid high levels are artisan craftsmen. Granted, non-industrialized shoemaking is so rare now that most of the ones who still practice the craft are in the artisan category, simply because "just hammering shoes together" isn't financially viable any more.... but the distinction is still the same, just as with any other craft.

@@andersjjensen who is even talking about "artisan" here? whole conversation is about "artist". anyone with skill can be an artist. period. making distinctions among artists is like trying to differentiate between Picasso and Warhol. in the end they are both artists and any discussion regarding their skills boils down to personal perspective and is plainly subjective matter. besides artisan is glorified term that has been hijacked by purple haired weirdos trying to sell their mediocre skills at expensive price to equally gullible try hards

As a person who who has always enjoyed working with their hands I can appreciate the satisfaction that comes from crafting something from nothing, though my skills are crude in comparison. So I knew when I selected this video that I'd enjoy it, and there's always been a small part of me curious at how cobblers performed their trade. I wasn't prepared for how mesmerized I would become watching it. Amazing artistry! These must've been made for a specific person, because I can't imagine all this hard work and awesome craftsmanship would be wasted on an off-the-shelf pair of shoes. Not to mention that I wouldn't pay as much as these must cost unless they were made to order. I'll never own a pair of shoes like these but if I could it would be even more rewarding to be able to watch the care and craftsmanship that went into them. Though I doubt the person that drops this kind of money cares about such tedious details...

The standard of leathermanship, dedication and hard work is phenomenal. Whose apprentice ship did he attend. He is a master in leather craft. He works steadily yet silently. Full focus and concentration on his work. I'm watching the leather Manship which has gripped my attention. He does not speak, attend phones. He has robotic precision and skill in his work. He is literally producing collectors items.

FRIGGEN WOW !!!! What craftmanship, just real craftmanship at its finest !!!

Craftmanship will go out of style, the minute we get so dull that we think everything is the same. As long as our perception remain sharp, works like this would mean the world for anyone with a passion for beauty and exception.
