For the record, animals have always been used by humans for all sorts of needs and luxuries such as food, clothing, etc. This has been going on long even before the great pyramids were even made. Think about it, ethnic tribes, royals, regular people of the past,they all used animals. Some literally wear wolves. And I'm pretty sure it was more brutal back in time. At least now, everything has modernized and all companies have already taken measures to remain as humane as possible.

The only advice I can give you is learn as much as you can. Find a shoe maker in your town that does this and become his Apprentice. That's how you're going to learn to be a master. @@frunkytowntesla You are correct, though a bit blunt. Goodyear welting can be done by hand. I've repaired several pairs of shoes and I'm not a cobbler but have done a lot of leatherwork. I have replaced the insole, rewelted, recorked, resoled and rehealed my own shoes many times. I have 3 pairs of shoes that are over 50 years old and still going strong. It takes a very long time without machinery but my sewing gets neater and neater every time.
