I think Monique played her well also they both played the role with excellence but I prefer Monique because ma Rainey was a plus sized woman so It took me a while to adjust to Viola Davis playing her.

Monique and Viola are not on the same level though & that's facts, regardless of weight. Viola knows how to A.C.T!

I didn't know this was a play, but loved the Netflix movie. We live and celebrate learning EVERYDAY. 😮 in 1930 , so Paramount went bankrupt during the depression, well well well. Enjoyed this short teaching session.

That’s because it wasn’t essentially about her life. It was a day in the life and it essentially covered a day of her recording this particular song “black bottom”. Originally was a play written by August Wilson

We had a piano from around that time at church for years and it was that light green color. I had my mom’s doll furniture that was that color too (she was born in the 1920s). A lot of stuff like brickwork was painted over too. Maybe they thought it looked more “up to date” for the time?

I didn't like her makeup either, they said she was known for heavy perspiration outbreaks. I guess they wanted her makeup to looked maladjusted due to the sweat. Since they only had a few pictures of Ma anyway, they could've made her look more easier on the eyes!

It's bc she's used to wear so much make-up ,and performing with little to no air will make your make-up smudge like that...

It was metaphoric, her makeup. The hot weather, poor air quality, Her needing a pepsi, her sweating it a resemblance of a economic self preservation struggle of her artistic talents. If you gonna steal my work, you're going to respect me while you're doing it. e.g. signing of the contract & having the ability to make millions over decades off of the publishing rights. This is classic August Wilson's work!

The movie was not the story of her life it was a day in the life. The movie is based on a play by August Wilson

It's an interpretation of an event that included Ma Rainey; therefore, the setting as well as characters, including Chadwick's character are exaggerated or unrealistic. Wilson's play is based on the song and how he envisioned the events to occur. The film simply tweaked and exaggerated details of the play not her life.

You can tell by the narrator's accent that it is not Columbus , Ohio.

Also she was from the south so she couldnt have been talking about Ohio

It was just a movie about when the cut black bottom in studio. Literally a movie about the studio sesssion. I was lost and feeling incomplete until I realize it wasn’t an autobiographical or an if that.

The film was brilliantly done! Amazing cast, amazing actors and top notch directing. Go do your research before you start badmouthing the film. Don't ever speak until you know what you are talking about, now take a seat and learn how to appreciate the arts

Lol I get it but I think they should've chosen another name for the project. That way folks wouldn't mistake the movie as her autobiography but as an interpretation of an event. The movie was good but none of the events line up according to the play let alone her life, which may have caused confusion.

The event also according to the play and research was significant because it provided historical insight to factors such as racism, and the illusion that the North provided more opportunities and freedom than the South post migration. The event also marked the end of her career and change in music as well as culture as the world shifted from the blues to an upbeat Jazz movement, which Levee represents. All in all there are many historical and pivotal aspects and events in the film outside of Ma Rainey. All of August Wilson's plays go through time periods in the 19th century through the vision of African Americans, Ma Rainey is one of those significant people.

That’s unrealistic. They’re not always going to find an actor who resembles the actual person - that’s not how making movies work.

@@sunshinesunflowerz1647 What's Unrealistic is Violas Face. There are Plenty of Black Actresses that could have played this part. Viola was a bad pick.

@@ninacold Exactly. I think it's because Hollywood never gets tired of trying to make Viola Davis play "ugly" characters. Not that Ma Rainey was ugly, but stuff like the gold teeth and trying to make her overweight when she clearly isn't is just ridiculous

@@ninacold I don't think any if them really resemble her, but on the topic of Queen Latifah, she did a movie called Bessie where Monique played Ma Rainey, so maybe her? My thing is, why not just hire some unknown actor that resembles and maybe even sings like them. It would be much cheaper, for 10x the benefits. This is why I think Hollywood has bad intentions when it comes to stuff like this.
