Ma Rainey has gotten little to no recognition by the mainstream community over the years. She is the least mentioned for a woman who has made such a major contribution to music. In speaking with various people about Ma Rainey, most were unfamiliar with her. They don't quite have a mental image of her, no reference point in film, TV, pint or media… Strangely, nearly all had heard of Bessie Smith which I found curious considering Ma was Bessie’s mentor. My surmise led me on a mission to tell her story.

Very emotionally and spiritually uplifting documentary about the "Mother of the Blues." What an appropriate gift to Ma Rainey's enduring legacy. Perhaps she had lesbian tendencies at times, perhaps she was the ugliest woman in show biz at the time, but most assuredly she was the greatest singer of the blues ever! She was a smart-ass, bad-ass, fiercely talented and phenomenally beautiful artist! She was very tough and extremely intelligent. She was most beautiful through and through, from the inside-out! Ma Rainey showed her profuse black bottom and the whole world kissed it! Rest in God's Peace Ma Rainey, Mother of the Blues!

Thank you so much. Ma Rainey was on my heart for a while and it bothered me that no one had told herstory. I actually did the documentary six years ago. I didn't have good equipment, didnt have great editing skills and wasn't totally confident in my speaking voice at that time but I put it up anyway. And I was heavily criticized and picked apart. I didn"t let that stop me because the information was there for people who wanted to learn about her. I took the video down recently. I updated the narration and editing and reuploaded it. I did this because I wanted it to reflect my growth and be reflective of where I am today. It's been a world of difference in the replies. The responses have all been so positive and uplifting. Thank you for your kind words. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

@@satinasplace1897 Thank you for your reply. You have put together a very moving mini-documentary of another strong, gifted, opinionated, intelligent, feisty, fiery, phenomenally beautiful strong black woman such as Ma Rainy, Bessie smith, and you, Satina! You have come into your own power as a multi-media mover and shaker. Nothing wrong with you at all! Ma Rainey tells me that she considers you as a loving daughter. She cries real tears and thanks you for your love. I thank you too, Satina!

I often wonder was the character Shug Avery from The Color Purple loosely based on Ma Rainey. Even the head dress was the same , as well as the bisexuality. Both from Georgia and started singing in church. A lot of similarities
@satinasplace1897

I just read recently that Alice Walker did use Ma Rainey as the inspiration for Shug Avery.
@starsandlakes8576
@starsandlakes8576 3 роки тому
@@satinasplace1897 I never knew that. However watching your documentary took me straight to Shug Avery. I wasn't for certain bc at the end of Alice Walker's book she thanked all of the characters for "visiting" her and allowing the story to be brought to life. So to me that alluded to some sort of metaphysical experiences which gave her the story. This is nonetheless a beautiful homage to ma rainey in The Color Purple.

I looked her up and found this wonderful documentary! Living in Georgia, you'd think more would be said about her here but little to nothing is said of her here in Georgia today. At least not that I know of and it's EXTREMELY SAD! There are many who would find her story to be HUGELY, HUGELY inspirational. She would not only inspire African American girls but the bi-sexual/LGBTQ community. Thank you for creating such awareness.

Ive played for a few years & play decent major, minor, etc., I’ve also heard of tuning to a drop D Chord but don’t know how to do that. So is there anyone who could tell me how to Tune my strings to play the Blues. From what I hear you Tune to an Open Chord without using any fingers on the fret to a certain chord, Sort of like a Banjo or Dobro that has a natural chord of whichever you Tune it to, in an Open Chord. I hope this makes sense to someone! Thank You

Watching this before watching the Netflix movie. Viola Davis makeup is questioning to me. Did Ma wear grease paint to the degree Viola is wearing??? In your opinion. Thank you for this documentary👍🏽❤️🤗

Yes that is true. I read Ma actually wore it a few shades lighter and when she performed, she would sweat and it made her look greasy. And it wasn't uncommon for performers back then to wear greasepaint. Opera singers wear it too. The idea is so that you can see their expressions from a distance. BUT I highly doubt Ma was walking around wearing it when she wasn't performing and in the summer time. ❤
