Just a word of caution Al when you are digging ditches and trenches that are over your waist deep, keep your large equipment away from the edge and NEVER get into it when it's raining and the soil is unstable. If you go higher than your waist, PLEASE use something to re-enforce the sides so you can get out if the sides collapse. I've been an engineer for over 30 years and I have seen or know of several people seriously hurt or killed from trench collapses in unstable soil. And they were trenches not much higher than their waist... Just like accidents in grain silos you think that corn doesn't weigh all that much...when there is a lot of it, it sure does! That soil has a LOT of weight to it and when wet, it's double the weight. Look into building a trench stabilizer from some plates of steel and use your mini excavator to put it in the trench as a safe working spot when you start laying line and connecting it up. I want to see this channel for many years to come. :) Just be safe!

Shoring is always a good safety idea. One Cu ft of soil weighs between 74-110 lbs and when it gives, it gives quickly. Broken bones and suffocating are no joke.

Plus it’s always a good idea to have another person on site in case something happens... you don’t want to wait 4-6 hours for other people to wonder what happened when you don’t show up on time. Safety 1st!

You think Al with his Finite dumb fuckery would know that? With all the money he spent on new toys he could have called in a company to drill a 100 ft WELL into the ground that would have been far better than what he has now.

Good Morning Al & Gina, I buried 2 totes to hold water myself to be a holding tank for water. My project failed. The plastic tub buckled up inside the metal holding container. Not sure if it was because I didn't keep the container full of water, flooding in our area or the mudd putting pressure on the plastic itself. So I pulled mine out of ground, cut in half, and now 2 beautiful planters (made a frame out of pallets) lol. We just finished a solar well, works great.

When digging a hole , get the machine level . Either dig out a level area or make a pad with dirt . The dirt spoils should have been on the left side . Easier to back fill and you do not take the chance of blocking the stream

The first time I watched Lumnah Acres I thought it would not become such a habit. My goodness I talk to my friends about your family as if we were friends. I love how Gina has become more confident in who she is and watching Olivia grow up. I love the cooking part at the end and Gina I grew up in Illinois and it was called goulash. Yours looked yummy!! Al, Gina and Olivia are so blessed to have a man that has the knowledge and talent to do so much and to learn to do. I love the comments under each view. These people obviously have lots of knowledge to share and I love that they are willing to. Many here on this view have important stuff to say and I am hoping you are reading and reconsidering things. God bless as you move forward. one person commented the beautiful land you own and I cannot agree more with them. You have been blessed so far with decisions you have made and I am impressed with the quality workmanship on all your buildings. Looking forward to seeing your new home begin and the DECK for Gina

Al: You might want to think about running electrical cable in the trench as well while you have it open. One day you may want to add a pump to the water supply at the creek (maybe sooner than you're thinking at the moment) and you don't want to have to dig it up again.

Al, a few tips that I've learnt for using a mini excavator. When digging, it helps to have the blade behind the machine. That way you utilize the all of the machines weight for downward force making it easier to dig. Also you are not at risk of undermining the blade causing the machine to tip forward into the whole. Utilize the bucket teeth like a ripper to brake up the soil first, rather than trying to push your whole bucket into undisturbed ground. Once loosened, you can easily get a full bucket and then dump it without it sticking as much. When lifting heavy objects, have the blade to the front so the machine forms a counter balance. In regards to the IBC, I would have suggested to pin it down into the whole. If it is empty and the ground gets waterlogged (particularly since there is a spring next to it) it will pop up out of the ground (I've seen concrete tanks do it) and your hard work will be wasted. Have a look into how septic/in-ground tanks are anchored.

With the amount of rock you have in the ground sand to bed the pipes and wires in will be a big priority to not have a rock shift and slice a line or wire. When you are laying out for power/water to the out buildings don't forget running conduit for possible ethernet upgrades later on as you never know when you will want a computer or internet enabled cameras/devices in the buildings also and running long distance wifi can be a pain. Com lines are easy as you can just run it inside a poly pipe rather then needing to run PVC conduits so 500 foot rolls of poly pipe run next to the water pipes so you can fish ethernet wires later when needed. With the equipment you have you will have no problems with installing basic geothermal heating/cooling for the future greenhouses. loops of water lines 8-10 feet under ground that just need a pump and fan for powered items letting you have around 50F water in a radiator the fan is blowing on so keeping the greenhouse above freezing all night on very little solar/battery use. The size of the greenhouse will say how many loops of pipe, fans, radiators and pumps you will need to keep it warm but then it only needs to keep it from freezing over night as the sun will quickly warm it up in the day.

Hey Al! From one newbie operator to another, one thing I learned was-don’t mix your dirt types. When you take that first scoop of top soil, set it aside. This way when you back fill, you can put that rich top soil back on top without all the rock just laying on top. Otherwise you’re really getting comfortable in that mini. You’ll be a pro in no time!

Good mornin Al! Great project. If I may, a few tips I learned from my excavator buddy while developing my homesite….to set a tank level, have a load of 3/4 stone delivered, dig 6” deeper, drop stone I. The hole, and level the stone, that way you can be more precise, and you won’t be walking around in the mud. When digging a trench, as you dig, and a small pile builds up on the side where you’re not piling your fill, knock the small pile back in the trench, and clean it up as you go. That way, you will have one side clean, and won’t knock fill back in every time you have to jump down into the trench. Hope these help as you continue your water system! We’ve enjoyed your videos for years, thank you very much!

Al, Gina, An IBC tote is not a pressure vessel. If it’s low on water it will collapse do to Hydraulic pressure. I really like the idea of capturing the spring water, but you should use a pressure vessel designed to be buried.

should put a few of those tanks in Al. By the time the water reaches the hydrant the one will almost be at half. Saying.

A small pressure washer only uses 3.5 Gpm. 1/10 HP pump generates 360 gpm and can produce up to 40’ of head. Connect both to your generator and along with a couple of 5 gallon buckets of water, then you’ve got a simple portable wash station for anywhere on the farm.

deeper water line keeps your water temperature cooler and consistent too I can really tell that i wish ours was another 4 feet deeper ... you really need to harvest your water below ground for safety for drinking... i wouldn't drink that stuff without boiling it but you shouldn't have to dig deep for your well. Yeah that grass is pretty good thats all i was noticing... by fall you should be covered really well... and if it goes to seed it should fill in even better. the goats should be happy soon

I was just thinking, "I wonder when Al is going to come across some big rocks." and luckily when you did just after that, they were not quite as big as what I had pictured in my imagination of those glacier-dropped nuggets! That tippy feeling is no fun, and yes, it was a very good thing that Gina was not there to see it! lol You are making such great progress on your land, inspiring all who watch. I love Gina's cooking segments. She has given me some great ideas for myself. It's called Goulash where I come from, and this dish always tastes amazing, no matter where it is prepared. I am on Atlantic time, and your videos always pop up just in time for me to settle in with that first cup of coffee, so thanks for that, too. lol Enjoy your day!
