At an altitude of nearly 4,000 meters, Sking is one of the most isolated villages in the Himalayan region of Zanskar. In just three months, from August to October, the Zanskaris have to harvest and store all their food for the coming year. All the women-young and old alike-work nonstop, from dawn to dusk, and worry about the arrival of winter.
Filmed from the point of view of a subjective camera by a young female ethnologist, "Himalaya, Land of Women" offers a sensitive and poetic immersion in the life of four generations of women during harvesting season. We share their rare intimacy and gradually grow attached to them.

"We work hard. We work and then, we die." Spoken with a broad smile, a whistle, a grunt as she lifts a burden that would stagger most Westerners. To everyone slamming her for supposedly not helping with the work: She lived with them for _years._ She knew their language. The people loved her! Of course she must have helped a lot. But she took some hours to focus on filming, so you could watch and criticize. (I also live in Asia. My wife and I do everything we can to help the people here. But still some people criticize.)

Thank you for making this film. I enjoyed it very much. I was especially touched by the 80 year old woman who worked so hard up until the day she died. My mother, who is not one for UKposts and such, happened to see a part of the film as she passed through our lounge. She was very interested and asked me to show it to her later, which I did. She was also moved by it and remarked on the rough hands of the 13 year old girl you interviewed. Thank you once again.

Marvelous documentary, beautiful people who show the good nature of humans in its essence. Watching from France and Australia. Bravo for such effort, worth every minute of it to watch and learn from it.

This is an excellent anthropological work. 10 years in 52min, I would love to see a longer, more drawn out version. The recording captured thousands of words, I suppose then that is enough said.

This video reminded me of my grandmother when i was a young boy an spent time on her farm an animals. But doesn t compare to the tough life these people endure We got it to easy . We just jump in our car and go to the grocery store stop crying an an reflect on how lucky you are to be in the u s a with all the perks you think you drserve

I felt so sad when it showed that grandma has died three days later... These people live a really hard life. Sometimes I think this can be also called lonely lives. Zanskar is beautiful too. Thanks for upload this video

Beautiful country, beautiful people. We can learn so much from them. Forget the studying. They have infinite wisdom and survival skills and they do just fine. Love viewing other traditional and ethnic videos. Thank you 💓

I have lived in that setting 3 years in Ladakh ..I am so happy this documentary portrayed the essence and simplicity of those people ..since I have lived there ..the shear height takes on toll on life what to talk of working in the field ..I saw God in the simplicity and connection of humans with nature ! Living in Canada ..grew up in India ..had privilege of travelling world over ..how humbling is this experience called simplicity ! Thanks for this documentary to show the beauty of life 🙏🙏🙏

I drove through this region on the back of a motorcycle in 2011. Video cannot even capture it's breathtaking beauty, which is still the most moving experience of my life in any land. I saw some nomadic tribes... the opportunity to speak was far from our grasp. What a treasure to learn the language and spend time here. I'm dreaming now of going back!

You cannot help but watch these people with great affection and respect. In my travels, in some very remote Philippine villages in Mindanao, I was told by a young man, "you will never be us". He meant at the time (I think), 'come and learn and let's be friends but you will leave again.' I'll never forget that. He trusted me enough to say that..... Thank you Marianne!

I am from Kazakhstan and living in USA for almost 12 years. My ancestors used to be nomads 100 years ago. To be honest I am tired a little bit of this civilization world where I live. It’s blessing to live like this without being scared how to pay your mortgage for home, insurance and other expenses every month.

The problem is when you become ill, there's no hospital, no doctors and no treatment- you die. And what about when your teeth will ache. These people are poor and I wonder just what can they afford to pay? Food, medicine, an operation?

@ johanna, yes you are right, and the work is hard. Pros and cons to nearly all ways of life, except poverty (while these people don’t have much money, I don’t consider them impoverished, this is just their way of life). I think there are plenty of people who would never dream of living like this if given the opportunity. I also think there are plenty of people who would happily take this life for the sake of simplicity. There is a peace in simplicity.
