If you love the movie "Hoosiers" and have ever wondered where the movie was filmed or what locations were used, you've come to the right place!
I returned to Indiana and tracked down all the filming locations (including some deleted scenes) that were used to make the movie "Hoosiers." I also visited Milan, Indiana to see the roots of the actual Milan community that the Hickory Huskers were based on in the movie "Hoosiers," and to visit the Milan '54 Museum, which is loaded with history, memorabilia and some movie props.
I begin and end this video in Milan, Indiana but I visit and show all the filming locations in between, which were mostly in and around the greater Indianapolis, Indiana area. I also show some movie props that were used in the movie, and I included some interesting ties and places related to the movie in this video as well.
Some images and clips were used as "Fair Use" for educational purposes for this video.

A side note that you may already know, but in the scene shot at Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the gentleman welcomes the team to "Butler Fieldhouse" and tells them how excited he is for them: that's Ray Craft, a key member of the Milan '54 team. He was actually the leading scorer for the team in the title game. A great player, coach and long-time school administrator, Mr. Craft later worked for the Indiana High School Athletic Association as an Assistant Commissioner. Jfyi....

I was born, and raised in Indianapolis Indiana, and my hubby was from a rural farm in Rushville, Indiana. In case anyone wonders if this movie portrayed Indiana basketball accurately I can assure you watching Hoosiers was exactly how we followed our teams. The hysteria was real! Busses full of kids going to the games, etc! I have attended more than one high school game in Hinkle Fieldhouse! It was quite the experience! This video is full of memories! Hoosier Hysteria is real! My team plays this weekend (March 16, 2024) in the Semi-State finals! I have it on my calendar! Thanks for showing these familiar places! ❤. This was a fascinating video. One thing I have always appreciated about rural towns is that they really preserve their history. I live in California, and in a span of just 15 years, I saw my old high school and my two places of employment throughout my entire 20's torn down and converted into something else. We seem to have a lust for change out here. Anyway, great work! I really hope to make it out to the Hoosier gym someday. FUN FACT: Maris Valainis (Jimmy) played in the same Salvation Army rec league that I did back in the early 90's. His team played in a different division than mine, so I never got to play against him. But it was still pretty cool story to tell, haha. I remember thinking it was so random for him to suddenly appear in Santa Ana, California. But I later learned that he moved out west to pursue more acting. Take care, sir!

Thank you very much! I understand what you mean about the length of the video. When I set out to do these videos, I try to find everything I possibly can that was used in filming and try to condense as much as I can without taking away what I am trying to show. Often, they end up very long because of it. But I would rather people have the chance to see everything there is to see and skip through the video than to just cut things out that people might like to see simply to make it shorter. Thank you for your comment and I’m glad you liked it.

I live in Lebanon Indiana and I just watched this video with my wife. You did a great job. You even got the Avon movie theater location which almost everyone misses. Just wanted to let you know the big building next door to that now houses Arnie’s Restaurant as shown on the small sign in your video. The significance and really cool thing about that Arnie’s Restaurant is it has the Marquee from the Avon theater hanging in the dining room and it is all lit up. The Marquee actually survived the fire that leveled the theater and is right next door. Everyone misses that but I was born and raised here. I actually watched Titanic in that theater the night before it burned down. It was burned down by an electrical fire from the heating system.

This is amazing! 2 movies that I watch when I'm having a bad day are Hoosiers and the sandlot. I born and raised in Indiana. I was stationed at camp atterbury in ninevah I was told it was filmed there and this confirms it! The movie captures the spirit of athletic culture especially basketball. I remember the first time I took my kids to a game here in scottsburg my home town, the scene where hackman is getting ready to enter the court for his first game you can hear the cheers and atmosphere as he says"welcome to Indiana basketball" nails the reality of Indiana basketball. The movie is magical and needs to be seen by this generation to see how simple life was and still can be. Thank you very much, I appreciate it! Aside from visiting all the gymnasiums, Shooter’s cabin was probably my favorite non-gym location to visit. As I approached the cabin, it looked very grim that the room they filmed in inside the cabin would still be recognizable after the tree basically demolished the cabin. But much to my surprise, the only room left somewhat standing was that one. It probably wasn’t the smartest idea to climb in there to film it as that building is very unsafe, but I had to try and get in there to show it. Plus I wanted to see it up close for myself too. I’m just glad it worked out. LOL. Thanks again for your comment and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for a great revisit! My house was also used in the film, as the INTERIOR scenes of the red house that was the principals home. Gene Hackman runs up our stairway and in to the bedroom to visit Cletus following his heart attack. Also a dinner scene was filmed that was cut, but appears in the director's version. Through the movie magic, it is many miles from the red house exterior---and not far from the house that was used for Myra's house. You are correct; that barn is no longer there but surprisingly several other scenes were also filmed on that property that day. Anyway. So much great stuff captured in your video. Thanks again!

You did a great job on this documentary! I didn’t know if I could sit and watch it that long but I was glad I did. I thought the same thing at Shooter’s cabin that in that run-down mess sat 2 Hollywood icons at one time doing that great scene together. I had 2 questions: 1. Where was the river that Coach crossed at the beginning, and 2. Where was Myra’s house located?
@ComeSeeWithMe
@ComeSeeWithMe 2 місяці тому
The bridge that coach drives over was in Crawfordville. And as I mention, the old structure you saw during filming has unfortunately been replaced. I’ll have to dig up where Myra’s house was located. I know the layout I just forget the name of the actual town. I would have done more on that particular location but I knew the old structures like the old barn were gone and that’s what I would have wanted to see and show had it still been there. I tried to focus more time on the places that I could dive deeper into. That’s funny that you thought the same thing about the cabin location. When I heard it had been damaged by the tree I wasn’t sure anything was going to be visible to even show or if I was going to even be allowed on the property to see the cabin. Much to my surprise, everything about the cabin was pretty much destroyed except for the spot right in front of the fireplace and that’s the part I wanted to see. When I compiled all this, and saw how long the video was going to be. I knew it was probably going to turn some people away from watching it just due to the length of the video. However, I didn’t want to cut out the pertinent things that I put into this, because I spent so much time and effort to do it. I figured for those who will invest the time to watch it, hopefully they will be rewarded by a thorough and complete project. This was a really fun movie to track down the locations for. I highly recommend it for any fan of Hoosiers. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

Thanks for sharing that. I really enjoyed seeing the gym. I had been to some of the other Hoosiers filming locations before but never to this one. I love finding these kids of unique locations. They are harder and harder to find nowadays and I love that this one is still around and still looks a lot like it did during filming.

@@ComeSeeWithMe I’m glad you were able to see it after the school fixed the gym up a bit. They replaced the floor and give it brand new paint during my 6th grade year so around 2013 I think. Sadly the original wood floor was vandalized a long time ago. Someone had broken in and poured acid on the floor so for most of my time there it was an ugly tile floor. Thank you for sharing this video. I’m definitely going to have to watch the whole movie so I can get an appreciation for all the locations you showed since I really don’t remember much of the movie 😅

I had heard about the floor being damaged. I can’t understand why in the world people would do something like that. Who is sitting around and had that thought pop into their mind as something they want to go and do??? Anyway, I was hoping to spend more time in the gym and I really wanted to go up top, but the administrators kind of squeezed me in to see it in between school letting out and the after school programs. I was just very appreciative they allowed me in to even see it in the first place. They escorted me to and from and I had to quickly shoot what I needed to. But I was very appreciative because they didn’t have to accommodate me like they did. But I’m so grateful they did. They were very nice people and it would have been a real bummer had I not been able to go in. So thank you those those school administrators for letting me see the location!

Hoosiers 1954 Milan Coach Marvin Wood from French Lick. Same town Basketball Legend Larry Bird was raised. Wood became the head coach at Milan at the age of 24 after college. Defeated powerhouse and 4 Time state champions Muncie Central Ronnie Truitt - #25 on the Milan championship team, got a scholarship at University of Houston and after graduating from UofH, was selected to be the head coach of rural Cypress Fairbanks, TX. High School in Cypress Texas 35 miles NW of Houston. In 1971, Truitt would lead the Cy-Fair Bobcats basketball team to their first ever state championship against state powerhouse Wheatley, the defending 4-Time state champions. Cy-Fair was able to defeat Wheatley by playing a very good defensive game just as Milan had done against Powerhouses Muncie Central 17 years before. Thanks to Truitt's coaching efforts, Cy-Fair was chosen as the National Championship Team. Both coach Marvin Wood and Player/Coach Ron Truitt would come full circle defeating two powerhouse basketball teams of similar stature and place both schools on the national map of High School Basketball Champions.

You do great work and deserve many more views and subs. If that’s your goal keep it up because you have the combination of skills necessary. If it’s not good luck with whatever your working on or toward. I’m sure it’s excellent! P.S Former all time leading scorer for little old Wes-Del high school in Delaware county. Graduated in 96. Record only held for around 15 years. But point was to say this movie really is special to me and many former players, coaches, family, and many many others involved with the game here. I was 9 years old when this came out. There is no question it was a significant part of what fueled my dreams to become a good ball player.

Thanks you. Sorry if it was too fast in places. I usually get people telling me my videos are too long because I try and cover so much. Anyway, hope it shedded some light on the locations for you.

@@ComeSeeWithMe , this is one of my favorite movies. I saw it at the theater when it was first released, I had it in VHS, and I have it on DVD, but I can't find it in Blu-ray. I was in my early 20's when it came out, and I've always loved it. I grew up in a small town in Illinois, alot like this one, maybe that's why I relate to it so much. That being said, this is the best Hoosier filming location I've seen since Adam the Woo's second Hoosier location video. You actually went more in depth than even Adam did. Very impressive. Keep up the great work, I'm now a subscriber.

Thank you very much! I follow Adam the Woo and he does an outstanding job. I don’t get around as much as he does. However, when I tackle a project such, I try and find as many places (locations) as I can and as much info on them as possible.

So do I, that place is a gem! They’ve done a great job of retaining the history of the building while also modernizing certain parts without taking away from the historical features. I wish more places would do the same kind of thing.

I believe most people don't realize Milan was no pushover going into this game. They were in the semistate finals the previous season I believe.
@ComeSeeWithMe
@ComeSeeWithMe Рік тому
You are correct, they were in the semi finals the season before. However, the Indiana class playoff system back then made it an amazing story regardless. The open class playoff system back then is what solidified its place in high school basketball history. Nowadays, with the changes in the playoff system, you couldn’t replicate that kind of feat if you wanted to because it simply can’t be replicated anymore in the current utilized format. Long live Milan’s magical feat…
