I grew up with a basketball in my hands, smack in middle of Indiana basketball country, about 30 miles from Knightstown. I played in 5 of the gyms featured in the movie Hoosiers. From the time I could hold a basketball, my Dad told me the story of the Milan Indians (the real town/name) over and over again. Years later, I was honored to meet Bobby Plump (the real Jimmy Chitwood) at his restaurant (Plump’s Last Shot) in Indy and was able to get a signed copy of his book and talk basketball for a while. Not mentioned in this video is Bobby Plump (Jimmy) went on to star for Butler University and play his college ball in Hinkle Fieldhouse after winning the state championship there. When Hoosiers came out, I was in the military stationed in Europe and saw it at the base theater. I cried several times during the show…..the shots of home, bits and pieces of my life, much of it visually familiar. It was everything I knew growing up. A few years later (1998) my old HS (Alexandria) won their one and only state championship……. Today, I have a theater room in my house decorated with my favorite movie posters. Yep, the Hoosiers poster has the prime spot on the wall. Thanks for putting this out there for all to see. A great movie and I highly recommend the trip to Knightstown to see the gym for yourself.

I always get a kick out of older people going on tangents on the internet where they almost always recall an event from their past. Sometimes it's with paragraphs but most of the time it's not.

The iron bridge at the start of the movie crossed sugar creek at my father's property. My grandfather purchased it in the 50's (or late 40's) Dad inherited it in the 90's. The bridge was replaced with a concrete one over 30 years ago. We scattered my father's ashes under the bridge in fall of 23..

I have Hoosier blood in me on both sides of my family but I was born in the Buckeye State I love it when THE Ohio State University Plays Indiana and Purdue in football and in Basketball sutch an underated rival in both sports or should I say it is overshadowed by TTUN rival in sports. Also I'm so Glad you came across Greg Oden what a legend at THE Ohio State University,and you got some pictures with him as well. That is so awesome

Dan, my favorite movie all time, too. I grew up about 15 miles from the Knightstown gym and played in it as a kid. It's hard to describe how important basketball was to us back then. Nearly every town's high school gym held 3 to 4 times the population of the town. The Hickory players were all about 5 years younger than me, but I've known Brad Long (Buddy) for 40 years and Dr. Steve Hollar (Rade) for about 25. Everyone from that era knows somebody who is in the movie. I've watched it, I don't know, 75-100 times? Never gets old, never will. By the way, watching you shoot, it's clear you've played!

My favorite line: "MY TEAM IS ON THE FLOOR!" I watched it recently on a national channel and I could not believe what they had edited out...the "praying scene" (of course!) and the scene where The Huskers walked into Hinkle Fieldhouse and they cut the measurement of rim to floor scene...two very big parts of this great, great movie!
@champstar9669
@champstar9669 25 днів тому
Your fav line is by far the most iconic scene from the movie that I think about all the time. Everyone is screaming at the coach. And he holds his little playbook/notepad up as if to convey that he has UNDYING absolute conviction that he's doing the right thing. When you're trying to accomplish anything great in life, there are always going to be detractors/haters. Some do it out of wanting what they think is best for you. Others envy your faith in yourself to commit to doing something instead of sitting on your hands out of fear. But the majority believes you are foolish to even attempt something they view to be impossible/improbable. They can be quite "unkind" with how they convey their opinions. A toast...to those who dare to dream...stand up for what they know is right...and manifest their goals into REALITY.
@champstar9669
@champstar9669 25 днів тому
Also love the irony that while the entire gym is screaming at the coach, the infamous drunk guy smiles to himself. Because he can APPRECIATE what the coach is trying to do. Doing the right thing is sometimes very unpopular and unpleasant. Certainly applies to the current era (2024) of quantitative easing causing out of control debt and inflation. No one has the courage to do the right thing and tell everyone to just suck it up and take their "medicine." Instead, they just collapsed a key bridge in Baltimore so they can blame hot inflation on "supply chain disruptions" instead of policy errors. Gov't said they'd cover the entire rebuild. Everyone knows you only do that when you're the guilty party that's responsible for the damages. Robbing from future generations to finance a brighter today -- for their corporate overlords. If you've ever played Jenga, you know how the story ENDS. Many banks are already technically insolvent. The FDIC doesn't even have 5% of the funds to cover deposits. The entire financial system is on the brink of collapse. Yet The Powers That Ought Not Be continue to claim how wonderful everything is. Meanwhile, the rich are building underground shelters in places like New Zealand. But I digress. I wish everything in life was as simple and pure as basketball.

So we took a trip over there between games and shot some hoops on the floor. great time between my son and I. SO glad to see you and your family had a great trip. I met Angelo Pizzo at a game in Bloomington and asked him about a scene where the players weren't tall but they were good shooters and tough, and asked if it was supposed to be Loogootee, he responded that it was so long ago, he couldn't remember. Look at the credits, listed is the referee in Logootee, yes they misspelled it! In 1970, our high schools consolidated and got in the final 4, 5 years later the only game we lost was the state championship. This was BEFORE class basketball. The old gym is still standing and it is a crackerbox. Love Indiana basketball, go Hoosiers!

About six years ago my son and I took a trip east of Indy to check out some HOOSIER HYSTERIA! We first went to the Knightstown Gym after a great breakfast at a little corner diner. There was a mid-season girls tournement going on, but it was still very memorable. From there it was on to the Indiana Basketball HOF & Museum in New Castle. After a great tour, we ventured down to Milan where they have a Milan Indians Museum. While we were there the museum director advised us to go to the barber shop next door. Low & behold, Bobby Plump was in there getting a haircut! There were probably 12 others there and Bobby was "holding court" and telling stories! My son Riley and I got photos of us with Bobby! A great dad & son trip that we will never forget! The Milan water tank says it all: STATE CHAMPS 1954

I'm from the town of Wingate at 15:35. Both my grandfather Herbert W. Crane and father Herbert W. Crane Jr. played for Wingate during their time there. My dad Herbert Jr. played in the old Wingate gym that's still there except it's now a big tractor shed. My dad also would go by and see those guys working on the different versions of the electric scoreboard until they got i right. We moved to Denver in 1959 but always heard about Indiana basketball from a lot of people. Take the time and look at the sign to see what all happened there, including a national championship. Lots of history in that little town!

Indiana High School and College basketball was fantastic back in the day. As for High School Basketball it was almost unexplainable. You could drive through a fair sized city of 80,000 people on a Friday night and not need to stop at any stoplights because everyone was at the game or at home listening to it. There were no Class A, AA, AAA, AAAA. All schools were in the tournament and it was awesome. In the 90's Sports Illustrated ran a 20 page (Approx) article on how great Indiana High School basketball is and some jacka$$ decided to destroy it and introduce class basketball in the late 90's. Never been the same since. Fast forward to 2024 and the great basketball state of Indiana puts one college team, Purdue, in the tournament. How embarrassing. I know that there will be some Hoosier come on here and try to say it's still great but they are out of their minds. No comparison. This was a classic "if it ain't broke, fix it anyway".
