I once asked someone who insisted that the US is a Christian nation, if that's the case why don't we have universal healthcare? Seems pretty Christian to me. He accused me of changing the subject. Same guy also claimed we got all laws from the Bible and when I told him I'd seen a replica of Hammurabi's Stone and that laws predate the Bible he accused me of making it up. I had to tap out of the conversation at that point.

I briefly worked with an awful man that adopted Black children because he believed that the reason for higher rates of poverty in Black communities was a problem with Black culture. He was one of those "I don’t see color" types. I think about those kids a lot and hope they are okay.

That also reminds me of police pointing guns at a black teenager, in his own home, on suspicion of burglary. He had been adopted by a white family, but a "concerned" neighbor called the police. Materials, because children can't consent, so it's not the moral or legal equivalent of content produced by consenting adults. Even if the intent is to hold his son accountable, don't just say, "It's bad and you should never do it." Explain why it's unrealistic, how it can be addictive, and how he can make responsible decisions about it when he's mature enough.

The idea behind constitution being a living document means that the government can reinterpret it to cover things the founders could not meant it to cover, since such things did not exist yet. The counter argument is you would need to instead amend the constitution, so this would be an appropriate action from that viewpoint.

@@Prinygod Given that some of the founding members thought we would throw out the constitution every generation to better fit that generation's views, I kind of doubt that they only meant that we had to "interpret" it to mean different things based on what emphasis we put on certain phrases or rely on implict powers or whatever legal shenanigans they want to bring up so we can all avoid the hard work of amending it. Interestingly many of them opposed treating it as sacred because of course it would lead to stagnation and breakdown within a society. For anyone else reading: that's why originalism is such a dumb concept because not even the founding fathers believed in that concept and they were rich white land owners who didn't want to pay taxes to a empire.

You know, when someone points out America isn't a democracy but a republic all they are just saying is the people choose other people to make the decisions for them. Functionally they are the same thing. A democracy maybe two wolves and a lamb deciding on what's for dinner, but a republic is: one wolf elected by lambs who didn't know any better, another wolf elected by a majority wolf district, a lamb elected by lambs, and about 20 or so wolves elected by districts gerrymandered to hell and back in favor of wolves deciding what's for dinner.

But others are really under threat, or have even actually experienced serious harm, and "It's not so bad/It won't be so bad" is a coping attempt. It sucks, but the modern world is very complex, and we have a lot of serious problems that individuals can't do much of anything about. It's overwhelming, even for people who try to be responsible and proactive. But at the very least, people should try to avoid contributing to problems and to at least stay out of the way of people who are making reasonable attempts to address them.

Funny thing is that abortion access is not an issue for the rich and powerful. They can afford to leave the state, leave the country, or pay for an illicit procedure. Then to assuage their guilt, or to virtue signal, they'll vote for Republicans who will deny others the same right. Conservative evangelicals get a disproportionate number of abortions due to the lack of comprehensive sex ed and contraception in the places where they grew up, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Technically, no. The First Amendment’s Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses do lay out the seperation of Church and State. The former says that the State cannot etablish/endorse a national Church (i.e. religion. The latter says that the Church must be free to operate as it should (barring anything criminal) without interference from the State. It’s just that Jr efferson used the words “seperation of Church and State” in that address.

I may be wrong, I just googled it because I got curious but it seems to be annoying, because it can only be removed by it's own unnistaller , otherwise nothing can remove it or stop it from spying and also if you don't pay them or breach their contract they can literally make the device unable to connect to the internet, they can also deny the usar cancellation or the unistall code. which is too much power for a single software. Their terms of service are pretty skewed against the user, I don't know why would anyone use this.

The uninstall facility asked for a password to uninstall, and there was no other recovery mechanism available anywhere on the internets. I dug the files out by the roots, but it was too late -- Covenant Eyes had woven itself into the bowels of the IP stack in such a way as to prevent any fix at all. I ended up re-imaging that machine as a Linux Mint box.

He may believe in defacto racist policies, but that doesn't necessarily mean Johnson actually thinks non-white people are inferior.

@@TheFireGiver- People of color, women, LGBTQ, etc. people can only be useful idiots for American far right movements. They'll never be full-fledged members of "the club." And these movements will turn on them, after they gain enough power. And then they will turn on themselves. They're defined by opposing certain groups of people and by seeking power and wealth, much more than they're defined by the principles they pay lip service to. They need "others" to oppose and an "existential threat" to rally against.

I hate how people are using "freaks" and "weirdos" to describe the GOP. It kinda downplays how serious a threat they are. I get this is comedy but the GOP is not funny, they are literally running full sprint at autocracy.
