KITT was considered state-of-the-art when we first meet him in 1982. So why was an obsolete periscope from a war four decades prior crucial for one of KITT's best known features? I have the pleasure of seeing KITT every weekday evening at 7 o'clock as Knight Rider is being reshown here in the UK. It seems to be the later episodes as Peter Parros is in it and KITT is a Convertable and has Super Pursuit Mode.

Me and my friend bought one of these when we were kids back in the '80s. We used to use it when we were playing in the woods when were playing like soldiers. When hurricane Andrew knocked down all the Australian pines behind our houses they made perfect foxholes where the root balls were. We would play with all the neighborhood kids running around like little army men with our plastic AR-15. I think we paid 10 bucks for it at an army surplus store in Fort Lauderdale. Man we could get a bunch of stuff from that store and we would play for hours in the woods behind the neighborhood houses. Man that takes me back.

Having in recent years started rewatching the series on Blu-ray, I couldn’t stop my giggling in one episode seeing the seat disguised stunt driver pull up next to Der Hoff. Also, considering the time being in elementary school I remember for one of our classes we had to make a science project. Periscope was one of the items we could build. My dad ended up helping me make one that ended up getting me a passing grade and the best in class. It was made out of cardboard, two pieces of mirror and some duct tape. Once it was made it was about the size of a Pringles can. I hadn’t thought about that memory until now. Thanks.

I wonder if they got the idea from the Dukes of Hazzard. In one of Dukes' best episodes, season 2 episode 6 "The Ghost of General Lee", Bo and Luke blind drive General Lee by Luke using a periscope from the back seat to give directions while Bo lays down in the front floorboard using the pedals and steering wheel. "You better give me some good directions. I feel like I'm working on my instrument rating here."

Wow, very cool. That does explain why we see that weird reflection in some shots of KITT driving. Never understood why that would be there before.

I figured the driver just disguised himself as the seat and he looked through the panel. Very clever.

The first season yes! There was a seat suit that the stuntman would get in. This was before they invented the blind drive seat.

This is really hard to believe, because you can see in Voodoo Knight, Race for Life and especially in Custom Kitt that the face of the blind driver is directly behind the acrylic insert of the blind drive seat.

I always thought they looked out the headrest because I spotted one of the times he mentioned when they did; they had the beige fabric draped over a large bulge behind the seat. I never realised they stopped; I just assumed they got better at hiding it ;)

Would be neat to mock up an old seat like the blind driver seat to display at shows along with the car, truck and trailer.

That makes a lot of sense because they have to figure out a way to make it look like KITT was driving himself in the show without the viewers seeing the stunt driver. I knew how they did that. This was an amazing video.

Old special effects are so much more creative and it wasn't always easy to make them happen. They built realistic models and stuff ... Today everything is done by computer (which is still cool, but you know what I mean). Must be amazing to listen to people who actually worked there ... Thank you so much for sharing this!

That's interesting because before the re-runs in the 90s when I could replay scenes, I thought they may have used some type of periscope. It seemed like the best method to me, short of a remote controlled car. Now I see they did use that method

Fascinating stuff! Gotta watch some 3rd - 4th season episode and look carefully the auto drive scenes with this information in mind :) Watched KITT vs KARR from dvd few days ago, but it was more for fault finding an intermittent video image problem on my tv when dvd player is connected to it, so the focus was a bit elsewhere :P

That was fascinating..here's my thoughts..season1 we know it was a seat suit,as in the driver was the seat, you can tel as it looked do different from the passenger seat..S2 they modified the seat with the stuntman looking out of the blackout in the seat,I always thought the blackout was not dark enough as you could definitely see a head,I'm thinking race for Life or Custom KITT..S3 they made a new seat with the periscope, note how low the seat was on S3,it really hid the cover...season4 brought a big change, both in front and behind the camera..up to then Jack did the blind driving but he became 2nd unit director, therefore couldn't give the time to stunt driving..we know his brother Andy took over blind driving KITT in S4,but my theory is he couldn't drive the car with the periscope, so new seats were constructed, you can clearly see the back of the seats in the blind drive cars were much taller and wider,I think they went back to the S2 design of the driver sitting straight up and looking out the blackout mesh..if you watch a few S4 episodes,Scent of Roses for one, when Micheal gets in KITT us say goodbye, you clearly see the arms of the stuntman poking through the passenger seat and the shroud, and how tall the seat is... However they did it,to drive the car so brilliantly while looking thought that small apiture was amazing!!

2:35 I just watched your video, and I have to step in with a correction: K.I.T.T., a marvel of Knight Industries' engineering, is equipped with an advanced artificial intelligence system that grants him full autonomy. This isn't a trick or illusion; it’s a genuine feature of his design. K.I.T.T. can think, make decisions, and navigate dangers independently, powered by his state-of-the-art AI. So, while your stunt driver theory is intriguing, in reality, K.I.T.T. doesn't need a driver because he is the driver himself.
