There's something insanely funny to me about the trump worship. Like, when I was a Christian years ago, I was told "The Anti Christ" would pretend to be the savior, prophet, and Christ reborn while being worshipped by people who were deceived. That legit sounds like trump.

I am a Christian theologian, and a leftist. It was the Bible that got me to be as progressive as I am, and it is faith that keeps me going. It is beyond horrifying to see the words and energy of my religion being used to prop up a fool's gold idol like Trump, and it is honestly sickening how people I once respected now support these horrible things. I'm part of a progressive church, and even though I'm transgender, i've received nothing but welcoming support. The good ones are out there, but they also share your sentiment that our society can still do good things without the religious part animating it. In any case, this is a very good video, and well argued. Religion is a difficult issue to tackle, and the American Right Wing is beyond evil. It's good to see people fighting against it.

I am also a Christian, and largely share this sentiment. I have very religious parents and extended family. The vast majority are extremely conservative and some are even openly racist. As I've gotten older I have found it more and more disappointing and frustrating to see my family use Scripture to support political beliefs, politicians, and policies that are just plain hateful. Often done so with a smug attitude and self righteous tone. They assume that their "righteousness" of faith and belief extends to their political beliefs and actions even though they often directly contradict each other. It's maddening.

Another Christian leftist chiming in. I agree wholeheartedly. The seeking of profit and belief that doing so will naturally produce the most ethical outcome as proposed by capitalist ideology is no more than an enshrinement of the love of money and false idolization of money. Christ instructed his followers to share all things in common, and ridiculed those who had wealth while others starved and it was in their power to help.

"It was the Bible that got me to be as progressive as I am." I was brought up in the Southern Baptist Church, and I can say pretty much the same. I grew up in the evangelical church, and vividly remember the beginning of my deconstruction: our head pastor took a sabbatical for the summer. Our church prided itself on diversity, and was motivated by mending racial relationships in the church. Our head pastor decided to bring in guest pastors from various all black churches in the area to fill his spots while he was away. On his first Sunday back, he started off his sermon with a massive stack of prayer cards (little notes people can fill out and drop in the offering bucket) and began reading them. All of them were some variation of " n****** shouldn't preach." He was quick to admonish, shame, and tell anyone in the congregation to leave immediately if they felt this way, but they had no way of proving who wrote what. It didnt matter what my pastor felt, our even how the staff felt. The fact that my church, one that prided itself on social progress had such a large, rotten and disgusting group of people who would write such things instantly turned me away from church and ministry altogether. If the "fruit" of believers indicates their faith, how can I still believe when most of the fruit is rotten?

The funny thing re: Catholic Church's stance on abortion is, the famous medieval German abbess Hildegard von Bingen, theologist, medical doctor and mystic, _who was beatified and later canonized by the Catholic Church,_ was among other things famous for her medical skills and wrote detailed herbals with illustrations (which are still in print today). Her herbals contain multiple entries for plants who can be used for abortions, with detailed instructions and wanrings how to use them without poisoning the pregnant woman. It doesn't work because it's based on the idea that cell phones only use the closest towers... but they don't. Or at least they don't always. I was pretty shocked that SMN used and trusted this info, too, but they have a habit of taking things that are sketchy and merely showing them briefly while not delving into them -- they're still trying to use it to make a point, but also in a way that gives them plausible deniability.

I grew up in a pretty progressive church, and while I stopped believing around 20 or so, kept going from time to time when I was back home for my family's sake. Our choir director had just come out as trans and some of the elders in the congregation were throwing a fit. My pastor just very calmly got up there in front of every one, said "All are welcome in God's house." And then stared at some of the more outspoken members, before continuing on with the service. That is to say, church was always a community more than a religion to me, and that community is what gets destroyed when people try to co opt the message to spread hate.

The exact same is true of Christianity/theism as a whole. People feel uncertain and insecure and are provided false confidence in the form of prioritizing "spiritual" rewards over material ones, a general promise of some form of life after death, and a promise that those who have wronged others will be punished in said afterlife and/or simply be left out of the rewards of the faithful. Theism also allows a sense of belonging, a sense of superiority in the form of secret knowledge and understanding unavailable to the uninitiated, etc etc, These fears are not unfounded but magical thinking is an incomplete, highly manipulatable, and ultimately hollow solution. Please do not pat yourself on the back for being "one of the good ones" because you'll simply allow me to be tortured forever in Hell rather than attempting to force me to be pious to avoid such consequences.

Not to forcibly convert people to a strict religion and its practices and rituals. Those said structured religious practices and rituals came much later, developing and evolving alongside the Bible and the different sects of Christianity.

I am a liberal and I am also a Christian. When I started to take my faith a bit more seriously and began to grow in it I started evaluating the world around me and started noticing things I, for some reason, never noticed before. Those things tended to be that almost without fail, everything conservatives believe in is antithetical to Christ’s message. To this day I don’t really understand how people who claim to be Christians AND conservatives can reconcile the fact those two belief systems are in opposition. Christ says to take care of the poor, the sick, to love, especially your enemies, not to judge, to reject the pursuit of wealth, to welcome refugees, to be of service in whatever way you can etc…. basically all of those things conservatives actively hate or at best, ignore. It just didn’t make sense to me, and then I realized they don’t actually believe in the same Jesus I believe in, they have formed some sort of opposite Jesus and worship him. That was before Trump, now that Trump is around I seriously think he is their god, their plump golden idol. If the real Jesus were to appear to them and point out this dissonance, I’m pretty sure they would call him a communist terrorist and throw him in jail. I fear them and yet I fear for them too.

The last time I went into a church was around a year ago for mothers day with my grandma. I haven't believed since I was like 10 so I usually avoid churches like the plague. Thankfully, I didn't burst into flames upon crossing the threshold, but the entire sermon still haunts me. They kept talking about the hate and mass shootings and generic bad stuff going on (FYI my grandma had just experienced a walmart shooting like a week before) and at the end the pastor just goes "but it's okay, because Jesus will raise his faithful to join him in heaven and leave the earth behind to burn with the sinners" like they're solution to every possible thing is just to wait for God to fix everything and everyone who doesn't go to church regularly will burn. I cannot express how fucking baffled I was, trying to keep a straight face while I was internally screaming. No wonder younger folks leave the faith in droves.

I cannot for the life of me understand how people will say and do the opposite of the book they claim to follow. When Prager U put out their video in which they depict Jesus supporting capitalism to get rich, I felt like I was crazy. Jesus's acts, like directly opposing the concept of being rich (even directly saying you cannot serve God and money) and throwing the merchants/moneylenders out of the temple, are taught so early in youth I thought everyone who'd grown up anywhere near a church would turn against them. I identify as a Christian myself, though I don't need to in order to point out their hypocrisy, or feel insane when their fans go along with them. As another commenter said, I'm a socialist partly because of my religion, not in spite of it. If you truly believe in helping your fellow man, you realise very quickly that capitalism, and the "Christians" who support it, are incompatible with making the world a better place. That's something anyone of any background can reach, regardless of your religion, and it seems like the stronger someone professes their belief to be, the faster they turn your back on its teachings. Ironically for those people, they skipped the part in the Bible where Jesus crticizes people who go around bragging/showing off how great their faith was.

The "Prosperity Gospel" cult only focusses on that one alleged story by Jesus only found in Matthew, the one about the master who handed money to his servants to increase it while he is gone, and then upon return punished the one servant who buried the money to make sure it didnt get lost... but didn't make fat profits for his master by "investing" it. That's their "argument" that their version of God wants his followers to be rich and despises poor people. They dont see it as an allegory, they take it literally.

Part of the issue with this conversation is that this is a faith-based belief system. Faith-based belief system allow people to believe things that are not true because they just want to believe them or they think they'll be blessed for believing them. With faith-based beliefs anyone's personal opinion or prospective about the world is valid because it's not about accuracy it's about personal truth. We need to move away from faith-based beliefs and believe in objective moral truth that comes from a secular perspective because that's what's more accurate and meaningful

Ok. But what you described is not Christianity. We are not taught to repress our critical thinking skills, nor is blind faith part of our creed. Free will, choice, peace. These are the cores of our belief: to be good for the sake of being good, to live a life full of love for each other, no matter the differences. These things ARE God and thus bring us closer to him. I'm not sure I've explained myself well enough, but that's the best I can say.
@AlecWelsh-ut7cc
@AlecWelsh-ut7cc День тому
@@lorenzocassaro3054 faith is blind by definition. It requires you to believe things you can't know to be true or simply don't know. Outside of believing that Jesus is the son of God there's not really much you can claim about Christianity that somebody else can't also claim or oppose. Because of the nature of faith-based belief everyone has a valid argument because faith-based beliefs are personal not based on objective reality.

I've known quite a few young Christians who stopped going to church. Why? Because they were tired of the older members of the congregation talking to them about the "sinfulness of youth today," and either questioning them about it or praising them for not being so "sinful." Basically, they were tired of everyone 50+ years old at their church either a) viewing them as a proxy for all of their perceived ideas about the "bad" and "sinful" (cannot stress that enough, they love to use that word when what they really mean is "stuff I don't like") stuff that other young people do or say or think or are, or b) holding them up as a shining example of how not all young people are terrible and sinful (spoiler alert; most people subjected to that kind of praise won't feel like they hold up to such a standard.) Reportedly, it's just exhausting and at least mildly humiliating a lot of the time. So why the fuck would they keep going to church?

I'm from the Midwest, so I'm not as immersed in religion as, say, the Southerners who are deeply entrenched with Southern Baptists, but I'd be lying if I said religion wasn't a fundamental part of my upbringing. But it wasn't kind for a neurodivergent individual, either. The fundies thought I was possessed with demons and the traditionalists thought that being raised by a single mother indicated a weak support structure in my life. It didn't help that there were several incidents at churches that ultimately shaped my path to agnosticism. If religion is supposed to be fulfilling then why are religious people so mean and unhappy? Also, I saw the giant cross in Effingham, Illinois. It's stupid.

My wife and I run a home church for our friends and family, and am called out personally by “wouldn’t it be horrifying to watch your religion be highjacked by THIS guy, and use it to push Fascist policies”. Any disagreements about validity and truth are made void when you stop applying the word to yourself, and start using it as the expectation every human needs to abide by.

There's a pretty strong correlation between authoritarianism (as in loyal follower personality traits) and being highly religious. It is sort if a "no duh" if you think about it. Anyways, religious folks need to be extra cautious about who they elevate to leadership/power. Just want to encourage you to reach out to your community, because they don't tend to take advice from folks like me (an atheist and a scientist). ;) As with everything involving humans, typical is typical, but expect exceptions ;)

You know what pushed me out of the Catholic Church? The Catholic Church. Because in my communion, as a teenager, I took part in a sacrament before being confirmed. Not a big deal, right? I'm trying to participate and to see what the jesUS is all about. Well, in class a day later, and I was threatened by the priest and both of his instructors. I was told, no joke, that if it was in the past they would have stoned me to death because you're not supposed to do what I did before finishing confirmation. I told them "Wow, how Christ like guys, he did say to throw the first stone right? Nothing else?" Needless to say I spent more time ditching the classes, challenging their beliefs, making confession terrible, drinking all the coffee and eating all the food, and they just confirmed me so my Dad who thought he was like Tony Soprano at the time wouldn't get pissed. You know what pushed me out of Christianity? You guessed it, CHURCH! Bible study class my girlfriend at the time took me to. Why not. The entire class they sat there and bashed other religions without consideration for what they taught. Super fun for them because I was sitting there making Wicca look amazing to the point that two other people were seeing the bullshit they spew. Was told to never come back a few days later like I wanted to be there. YOU KNOW WHA.... there is more but you get the point. Church is bullshit. There are good communities out there but it's sad that most of them are like my examples.

What are you talking about? The only sacraments you need to be Confirmed first in order to receive is Holy Orders, while Matrimony is debatable. Do you mean you received the Eucharist without going to Confession? That would make a lot more sense. You are not allowed to receive it outside the state of Grace-as St. Paul writes, those who partake unworthily drink judgement. Why is that such a big deal? As Jesus said in the Last Supper, "this is my body" and "this is my blood". Why would you be surprised Christians don't want you arguing for Wicca at their Bible study?
@xDanieL.A.F.x
@xDanieL.A.F.x 18 днів тому
@@dixieslav1274 that's what I meant. I ate the bread and drank the blood. I walked out so don't blame me if I don't remember. Also, I legit wanted to join so I wasn't stealing anything. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to do it. It wasn't a joke until they made it a joke. It was a big deal to them. And if that is the case, it's a damn shame, because being judged for participating willingly with the intent to join is pretty evil. So you agree with stoning me to death? Because that's what I feel. Also, the Christians there brought up wicca. I educated them. They hated me because I exposed their ignorance in front of the class.
@dixieslav1274
@dixieslav1274 18 днів тому
@@xDanieL.A.F.x Receiving in ignorance because you thought you were supposed to is very different from knowingly stealing it to commit sacrilege. No, I don't think you should be stoned, and doubt anybody else does. That said, in order to receive the Eucharist, you cannot be in the state of mortal sin. It is sacrilege. That St. Paul quote I gave earlier explains why. To "drink judgement" is clearly not good, but to condemn yourself. Normally it's a safe bet that non-Catholics are in the state of mortal sin, and it's the reason why Confession is always administered before youngsters and converts are ever allowed to receive. There is a right way and a multitude of wrong ways to participate in the Mass, and that's one of them. But praise be, we worship a forgiving God. Even upon the cross, Jesus said "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." Your ignorance will not be held against you, so go to Mass, pray, and sing the hymns, but do not go up to receive the Eucharist before you've made a good confession. If you cross your arms over your chest, the priest will give you a blessing instead.

Now I know basically nothing, but the faith I have been given in the reading of scripture in earnest, I'm truly not seeing anything the other Christians are saying. All these things that are swept under the rug and cherry picked don't have to be. There is a reason behind everything, and sometimes we don't always see it, but I've noticed a few of them over my time of reading the Bible recently and every single time it always ended up coming back to Jesus. All scripture relates with all other scriptures, but for some reason everyone I see who calls themself Christian seemingly don't simply trust and believe on God's Son and his words. They always try to make God and the Spirit of scripture in their own image and it comes off as strange, hateful, manipulative, and hypocritical, and no wonder. They are deciding what is sovereign, but we cannot decide that. The pride of man is being purported as the words of God, but we have no power of our own. We only have what we are given. All things from earth and from heaven are made by him, so what right does anyone have other than to faithfully accept and follow in his will? Just listen to his voice and follow him.
