In the automotive industry, the word luxury often conjures images of sleek German sedans and sports cars. American carmakers have often struggled to compete at the higher end of this market. But in recent years a new phenomenon has occurred. As the overall market shifts away from sedans and SUVs, a new market is emerging for plush, tech-rich, and high-priced premium pickup trucks.

And after we bailed then mf out, that's how they pay us back!! #1 reason why they created (I believe) Americans preffers to buy SUVs myth is because they can sell larger vehicles and charge double with excuse of is bc its a bigger vehicle and weights more and have more parts too assemble. Simply they are scammers and they don't build with quality( their vehicles constantly break) just quantity to satisfy its shareholders so they are in survival mode in every quarter of the year.

@UmmYeahOk

That’s German culture for you. ...they didn’t even start adding cup holders in vehicles till some time in the aughts... ...and those were a joke. Could only hold a can. Cars are for driving. That’s all. I truly believe they started adding them simply due to American demand. I knew several people who wouldn’t own a German car because they lacked this one simple feature. The Japanese figured it out, and started adding them in the 90s. Would be BMW, Mercedes and Audi owners ended up buying Lexus and Infiniti instead and now won’t even consider a German vehicle now that they’ve finally added the option.

@HP European (passenger) trains cruise at close to 100mph and reach over 170mph, you can only legally do that in a car on some German highways. It's not always convenient to take a car when speeds are comparatively low, gas is expensive and parking space is rare. The European car industry didn't do everything it could to make tramways (electric street railways) in cities disappear. It also didn't lobby the government to incapacitate the railway system with extremely low speed limits (50mph or so in the US??), nor mandate ridiculous amounts of parking space to render anything except a car useless in cities (the one exception being NYC). Almost forgot to mention the subsidised fuel! Off course Americans prefer cars, not because they don't care about trains or other transport, but because American car companies have made it so.

All these features will go kaput in a few years. My mom had a GMC SUV and the onboard computer died, making the car unable to start. Took it to the GMC dealership and after taking her entire tax return for the repairs (several thousand dollars), it still would die. They wanted those monthly payments though and didn't want to hear a word of it that they had charged her thousands without fixing the issue. So, she stopped paying on it and is going to just let the time pass for it to fall off her credit. All those cute features are just draining these vehicles and while I like them as well, unless you have the money to foot the bill for when it inevitably dies three years later, don't get vehicles with so many upgrades.

Yea your right. My dad bought a sweet looking Dodge Dually 3500 in 2001 that had cushioned leather seats both heated, sound system, running boards, wood trim. After about one year of farming and his refinery jobs the cd player stopped playing cds, then the leather started splitting on the seats, the running boards were sagging and you had to step over them cuz they wouldn't hold you. Then the passenger seat stopped heating then the dashboard cracked because of a hot day. Then after 2 or 3 years the body started falling apart and would rattle and make crazy noises. The only thing durable was the cummins engine. Dad finally got rid of that thing for a chevy duramax with the allyson tranny and never looked back. Unfortunately we lost him in 2016 but I'll always remember his love for trucks even the bad ones lol.

I had an 04 Lexus and interior held up really well air vents did not break, leather did not rip, the roof liner did not sag at all, and the clear plastic coated wood trim did not sun bleach. Very well made crossover that is too small to be called a truck and it has a decent V6 engine with excellent gas mileage for what it is and enough power to get you through rude drivers that don’t yield. Oh boy those seats are super comfortable. It was the car to own for soccer moms who do not want a mini van and those that want a smaller but still very comfortable to drive alternative to the full size American SUVs.

I'm old enough to remember when 100k was very high mileage for any vehicle. Now we feel cheated if we don't get 300k or more... They certainly don't make them like they used to. I used to carry my tool box with me so I could make roadside repairs in the 70s. Now I expect to get over 100k miles on any new vehicle without issues. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. For example, I had a Chevy Aveo once, and the idler pulley bolt just snapped off one day while driving down the road with less than 10k miles on it. I swore off cheap Korean vehicles for over a decade before giving Kia a shot. I put 120k trouble free miles on it before handing it off to the kids, and it still runs great.

@terryeffinp
@terryeffinp 4 роки тому
Only some people care about that stuff, most everyone I know could care less. I get about 12 miles to the gallon in my truck normal daily driving. Don't really care, then again my car I had before this truck had a hole in the fuel tank. So it averaged around 14mpg not too shocking going to a 6k lbs vehicle. Also my truck is paid for, so monthly operating costs are low regardless of fuel economy. Plus I can tow trailers, drag people out of ditches, haul tons of stuff in the bed, and since because it is a truck everything is built bigger and beefier compared to a car a lot of the components last longer, brakes, ball joints, tie rods, etc. If you really care about the environment drive the same vehicle through it's entire life cycle and maintain it to last 20 to 25 years, instead of replacing them every 6 years, or the new trend of leasing 3 years at a time. The emissions from a vehicle through its life cycle are nothing compared to the environmental impacts and costs of building a new one.

@@terryeffinp With ICE vehicles, manufacturing costs are pretty minimal when compared to operating costs, so driving a 12 mpg pickup truck around for 300,000 miles is going to have an enormous impact on the environment when compared to driving a 30 mpg car around for 240,000 miles.

The beds on 1/2 ton pickups have become so small that they now have limited use. But since most of them are purchased by suburbanites who only use the beds to carry a new big screen tv or a shopping trip to Costco, the beds are not really used much. I see more of them hauling boats or other trailers than hauling anything sizable in the the baby sized beds. Going from trucks with 8' beds to my '04 F250 crew cab with a 6.5' bed was an adjustment, but since I use it primarily to pull my toy hauler (I have trailers to haul lumber and other long stuff) it wasn't a big deal. The new 1/2 ton beds are around 5', which is 3' shorter than they used to be -- that's a whole lot of space. As the cab length grew to accomodate larger passengers with more comfort, the beds were forced to become shorter so as to keep the vehicle length short enough to fit into a surburban garage space and a parking space at the mall. With all this in mind, it would seem that full sized SUVs would be the better choice for the suburban masses, but I'm guessing that between the higher price and the "grocery getter" image of those steers most buyers to the pickup. The primary function of the majority of 1/2 ton pickups today is to haul people and pets in the cabs rather than cargo in the beds, which explains why millions of buyers are willing to fork out big bucks for vehicles with limited cargo space but very roomy and luxurious cabs. Being perched tall in the seat looking down at the underlings is another selling point (esp with 4WD). How times have changed in the past 40 years!

This explains why there are SO MANY trucks all over now. I’m in the Detroit area, and I see about as many young “cool guys” in Dodge sports cars as obnoxiously large Rams. I wondered why, all of a sudden, these young guys were driving around in big trucks who probably don’t even have a use for the truck bed. My dad’s truck is certainly not luxury, but it’s definitely fancier than his previous ones. But the guy does landscaping, plows snow and tows the camper. He USES his truck for truck things.

Then I swapped for a 1954 stock Chevy truck. Made it 12v, Weber 2 barrel and better shocks. Rides well, runs very reliably daily in desert, jungle, dirttrack, town and beach and uses 50% less gas than a modern fullsize. Take off on red lights is faster than most new trucks. They get me around 40mph when the I6 runs out of steam. All in all modern trucks are slightly more comfortable and less reliable.

In the UK you see folks hauling smaller camper trailers with their little suv or car - they call them caravans. I'll still want a truck. Trucks are people's way of making money. If you don't ever need to tow thousands of pounds, or haul big heavy things, or want 4x4 and good ground clearance for emergency situations, suit yourself. The smartest vehicle you can own is a truck. Even if gas prices double, trucks make you a hell of a lot more than what gas would ever cost. I've moved a friend's entire house worth of items with my truck towing a dual axle, 7 foot wide trailer in just 2 trips, and the day afterward, I loaded the truck with 3 dirt bikes, 3 sets of gear, and more than enough room for all 3 riders in the front, and had 4x4 in case we got stuck out in the woods. A Honda CRV isn't gonna do that. It's all about your lifestyle and how useful you want to be.

My dad bought a 2019 Chevy silverado work truck recently it is really good for working and the features were pretty limited. It had a 6.2 litter v8 and it dose it job very well. We did have apple car play and leather seat but that was it. It had 6,000 miles when we bought it and we got for 29k

Diesel cost that, not 15 yr old gasoline. Plus they cost more build today blame government and union leaders driving up the price = less net profit today in new cars why manufacture need bailout

Isuzu should relaunch in the states. The pickup trucks in Asia and Oceania, say like the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D Max fit the bill for barebones trucks.
@DMTruckSpotting

1 2 probably. Chevy has a lineup of medium duty trucks that are rebadged Isuzus. Isuzu also rebadged the older Colorado as the I-series, the Envoy/Trailblazer/Bravada as the ascender, the S10 as the hombre, and Chevy rebadged an Isuzu Truck as the Chevy LUV. That would make sense.

Hmm... out of all those trucks purchased for $70+k, I wonder how many of those are bought by customers who can legitimately afford it without breaking the bank (long loan periods of 7-8 years with low down payments)? When buying a vehicle, there are so many other costs involved and a truck comes with high insurance rates and high gas costs (~18 mpg). Not sure about maintenance and repair costs though. One of the people I talked to mentioned using his F150 as a family hauler. The double cab version allows lots of room for a family of 5, more room than a mid-sized sedan.

@CNBC your graphic @ 1:42 shows SUVs share of the US Vehicle market going from ~50% to 30% between 2007 & 2019 (and Car sales going from under 30% to almost 50% in the same period). Is this correct or do you have those two switched??

Interesting video-but if they have those rich people that worked for whatever they have and they want to feel like a working person give them their luxury trucks, I don't fault anyone-but I've pretty much have had a pickup all my life and man I've put more stuff in the bed from work to helping friends with no truck to having fun and there's nothing like it- but then again when I need my real fun there's my jeep. People are so critical of what others do-stop enjoy your vehicle whatever it may be and enjoy the work people put in for these videos.
